While watching it, I thought it was the most spectacular scenery I've seen yet on this channel, especially at Alp Grum - what a great place to have to stop. Instead of my usual 17-inch laptop I watched it on my 50-inch television screen which really showed off the mountain scenery.

Dylan there is a very good reason that the Bernina Express is hauled by an Allegra unit - the Bernina line from St. Moritz to Tarasp is only electrified at 1000V DC whereas the rest of RhB's network is electrified at 11Kv 16.7Hz AC! The Allegras are the only dual-voltage stock the the RhB owns - all their locomotives are either AC powered or diesel-powered departmental stock.

As i m a swiss citizen living in Switzerland 🇨🇭 i was travelling on this route several times in the past. June 24th i was travelling on a very scenic railway line in Norway 🇳🇴 from Oslo to Bergen. It was a beautiful trip. I hope, that you will make a video from this line.

Reasons to not take panorama cars: 1) Windows in regular part open all the way down so you really don't miss on the view and get fresh air 2) Using Interrail or other type of pass you can hop on and off both Bernina Express and local trains on the route as yo wish 3) No reservations. I did the route by hopping three trains (IR Chur-StMoritz, local StMoritz-Alp Grum and Bernina Express Alp Grum-Tirano) and honestly I preferred it this way over panoramic cars. And yes, no extra charge to Interrail holders is needed

Great video I took this train in Feb 2020 with my 1st class Swiss Rail Pass. At Alp Grum the platform was extremely icy and several people went flying. I agree the scenery was spectacular and a must do trip. On the return leg I travelled on a local train which was a classic EMU from the 1980’s which may have been retired by now. I saw it being filmed from a moving van, I was about the only one on it so plenty of room. I then took a trip down the Engiadina valley from St. Moritz back to Chur utilising the relatively new Vereina tunnel where I passed a vintage train with bar pulled by a baby crocodile. I did so many trips whilst there but this day was probably the best.

I have made the trip several times (it never get's boring) in the last 35 years or so. I absolutely agree with you about the panorama carriages. I have tried it once when they came into service but the other carriages are simply more comfortable (there is also 1st class in the Allegra EMU's). The Glacier Express is more comfortable. This has to do with the fact that the Bernina Bahn (St. Moritz - Pontresina - Tirano) has a compact profile due to the sharp curves in the line. These panorama carriages and the 3-car Allegra EMU's (suitable for driving under both 11,000V AC and 1,000V DC) are designed to that. The Bernina Bahn also has a different voltage (1,000V DC). And that will not change: the line needs it's own rolling stock due to the profile so it makes no sense to adopt the line for another voltage.

Gradually catching up on my RU-vid list! You have done well to expose the tourist trap of the Panorama Cars on this service. Yes, if I get to do the trip myself, I'll go for the Allegra EMU set and mix with the locals. That said, I might need to win the local lottery to be able to afford another big adventure as I understand Switzerland is an expensive place to stay for an extended period. I have been blessed to see other videos of this journey and am about to reach for my ancient (40 year old) collection of books on Swiss Railway Journeys, many by Franz Marti and Walter Trub to review this and several other scenic journeys. These may be dated, but the scenery is timeless (glaciers excepted). Thanks for another great video,🙂

Great video with a lot of information, well done and thanks. The panorama section offers windows through which you can have a look up at an angle of about 80 degrees. Nobody ever does that and for the scenery it is not necessary. There is a difference though for looking right/left: the normal seats give you a angle of about 60 degrees, the panoramic seats about 90 degrees. So the panoramic seats indeed have an advantage. But for the price difference I wouldn't mind at all to lean a bit forward now and then. I'ld never pay nearly 400% of the price in regular seats for the difference. Glad you mentioned it!

The wise traveller would get there and travel on the Rhb with an Interrail pass, then there is only a small supplement to be paid for travel in the panorama cars or on the Glacier Express (in this case, the value of the mea; provided is well worth the supplement)!

Excellent video as always Dylan, thanks. We did this trip in June 2018 during a week long stay in Chur and I can also thoroughly recommend it. Chur is not a typical holiday resort but a great place to stay if you want to explore by train or postbus. If you're ever there again, take the PTT Postbus from Chur to Bellinzona - well worth it. We did it one-way to Bellinzona then made our way back by train through the new Gotthard Tunnel and across country via Luzern etc.

@@burgerpommes2001 I have to agree to disagree. For someone who has never been to Switzerland, or even the Alps, £115(or £73 whatever it was for 2nd class), is well worth spending to see this kind of scenery in my opinion. I'm 61 years old and not made of money but I will do this journey one day, just as Dylan has very kindly shown us.
@burgerpommes2001
@burgerpommes2001 Год назад
@@BigPaul62 But you can either get a DB Supersparpreis for 30€ for the trip including the journay from a South German airport or buy a Swiss travelcard or an Interrail pass which will end up being cheaper and you will have a valid tickets for other days aswell. Those are for the normal train but these are better anyways as you can open the windows and get out at cool stations and continue your journey later. The scenery stays the same no matter how much you are paying.

Switzerland possibly has the best transport system in the world. Are you going to do more coverage of the country? Lausanne is worth covering for its metro which is having an additional line being built
@Fan652w
@Fan652w Год назад
I agree. In my view Switzerland beats its only serious rival, Japan. While they do not have high-speed trains (in a small country these are not needed) the Swiss enjoy a superb timetable integrating all modes of transport including the lake boats and (where they serve high-lying villages) cable cars. Fares are integrated. Indeed 400,000 Swiss out of a population of nine million have a 'General Abonnement' valid on all public transport except purely tourist lines up mountains. Tourists can buy a SWISS TRAVEL PASS which has a similar validity to the 'GA' The minimum period for a STP is 4 days..
@keithparker1346
@keithparker1346 Год назад
@@Fan652w I used to live in Switzerland and I think the best thing is the integration of train to bus or tram. Plus they operate on the honour system where there are no ticket barriers but you must buy a ticket before travel. This is specially good for buses/trams as it speeds up travel. The abonnement was a necessary thing. When I was there (2008 to 2016) it granted half price travel throughout most 99% of trains buses trams and I think some boats. I don't think it's so great for visitors in terms of costs
@Fan652w
@Fan652w Год назад
@@keithparker1346 I visit Switzerland frequently, and I agree with your first three sentences. The third sentence is particularly important. Unfortunately in your last three sentences you confuse the HALB-TAXE ABONNEMENT (currently I think 180 franks a year) with the GENERAL ABONNEMENT, currently about 4,000 franks a year. The HTA (of which there are now about three million!) gives only 50% off fares. The GA gives FREE TRAVEL NATIONWIDE. As you say, the HTA is not suitable for visitors. Tourists doing a lot of travelling in Switzerland should always buy a SWISS TRAVEL PASS. The STP can be got for 4, 8, 15days or a month. It has the same validity as the GA.

Wonderful journey, personally I don't think the panorama coaches are worth it. I loved the fact that I was camping between St Moritz, Samedan and Pontresina so I could flag down the train going from St Moritz to Tirano. Went in the middle of summer and it was great to be able to get off at different stops along the route, certainly can't beat having a beer on a balcony, overlooking a glacier whilst a train snakes it's way beneath you. :) The difference for me is that the West Highland line feels so remote as this little train crosses the bleak moor, whereas in Swtzerland, it very much feels like they've gone "Right! Lets engineer the sh*t out of this!"

As I am always staying in Switzerland, I use the fabulous Swiss Travel Pass, valid on all forms of Swiss public transport (trains, buses, trams, boats.) except purely tourist mountain lines not forming part of the integrated network. (The pass is valid to Tirano.) When I have used the Bernina Express the only supplement I paid was FIVE francs for the reservation. I am a lone tourist. But, like the Swiss themselves, I much prefer face-to-face seating as that ensures that seats are aligned with the windows!
