Sorting through all the medical insurance options for travel can be confusing whether you're on a vacation and need travel insurance or whether you're a full-time traveling nomad. Sometimes, you might need a combination of things like Obamacare, ACA, or just travel insurance with medical. What's all this mean and how did we put it together for our global travel needs?
We break down the confusing travel insurance terms, and we walk through why we've had different travel medical insurance solutions for each year that we've traveled. Yup, we've had three different solutions for the three years of travel we've completed. Come along, and we'll hopefully give you the information you need to help you make the decisions you need to make for your travel insurance needs. Another insurance to consider if it isn’t covered by anything else you carry is Med-Jet, which covers two medical evacuations annually AND it includes some other benefits as well. If you’re under 75, it is pretty reasonably priced and easy to apply for.

I love how open and honest you are regarding the financial part of full time nomad! Somewhere in one of your videos you mention your IMG insurance agent - or is that zip code dependent? Many thanks for your great videos!!!

I don't believe it's zip code dependent. We use Justin at expatinsurance.Com

We are both 62. Obamacare/Geo Blue Voyager Choice works well for us. Voyager Choice covers all pre-existing conditions as long as you have Obamacare or another policy that covers you in the U.S. Insurance companies are experts at defining illnesses as “pre-existing” . Geo Blue Voyager Choice solves that issue while we are abroad. Geo Blue also does direct billing. Primary catch is that you can only sign-up for six months at a time before returning to the U.S. for at least a day.

Yes. Great comment. We'll be out of the US for just under 6 months so a policy like that worked for us (this time).

Global Insurance outside the US, from my research, one needs to read the policy since most Global plans dont cover pre-existing condtions, and the wording may exclude "unknown" pre-existing conditions. Best to have a plan that pays the hospital directly. Make sure the Underwriter is a solid company.
@EatWalkLearn
@EatWalkLearn 4 месяца назад
Yes, reading the fine print is key. This is why we still carry ACA in the USA so our pre-existings are covered. For our global medical policy, we went through underwriting and they excluded our preexisitings.

I have been to 32 countries and nobody needed medical insurance and I had to see doctors on 3 continents. 🌎 The cost of medical attention is a mere fraction of what the US charges.

Hi, I'm going to watch more of this, and have a question that may already have been answered: how about Medicare for Int. travel?
@EatWalkLearn
@EatWalkLearn 6 месяцев назад
Great question. Steve is 62 so needs to start researching this topic. Assuming supplemental and travel insurance will still be needed.

Thank you so much for this video. Does your TX Blue Advantage HMO plan cover medical emergency transportation to the US? You said you got Geoblue Voyager Choice policy up to 6 month of travel. Given that your TX blue advantage HMO only covers emergencies outside the US, does your geoblue policy cover outpatient services (doctor visit, urgent care, broken arm/leg ,etc)? I appreciate if you can elaborate. Thank you for all you do.
@EatWalkLearn
@EatWalkLearn 4 месяца назад
Yes, TX BA covers transportation. Yes the Geo covers most outpatient with a $500 deductible which is the main reason we got it. The TXBA is a giant deductible for those things.

Some great info in this video. I'm going on holiday and I want to purchase trip protection & cancellation in addition to medical. I've discovered that it is difficult to find insurance unless your residence is in the USA. Any knowledge for insurance for what I mentioned? Thanks!
@EatWalkLearn

Are you in the USA? Your credit card probably covers trip cancellation insurance.

If not in the USA, check Safety Wing or Genti. I have not used these as they haven't applied to our circumstance, but I know others who have.

Thanks for this video. Very useful information. Have you had issues getting access to prescription medications? I take a controlled prescription medication that must be filled once a month, and I have to see my doctor every 3 months to get my rx renewed. Have you had to manage with anything like that as itinerant nomads?
@EatWalkLearn
@EatWalkLearn 7 месяцев назад
We only had 1 prescription, and the GP we saw in Malaysia was happy to write a script. I'd suggest contacting a doctor in the city you're traveling to.

My wife had Rx for her thyroid condition. When we were in the states, I use to fill it once a month. When we were planning to leave the US, we convince our doctor to give us one year supply. We carry that around while we are outside the US. When I go back to the states yearly, I pick up another year's worth. In some European countries, we would have been able to get them without a Rx at a pharmacy if we needed.

Why didn’t you consider the IMG policy including US? You will not be bound to any US states? Thanks for laying out your strategy, I just started to watch your content, learned a lot already. We will split our time between US and Europe, I’m looking at the IMG global with US policy right now.
@EatWalkLearn
@EatWalkLearn 7 месяцев назад
Because we could get ACA for free and the US addon for IMG didn't make sense for us.

Due to my pension, I don't qualify for free Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) insurance, but have a premium of $384 a month even with just a high-deductible Bronze Plan. I'm therefore thinking that, for when I start traveling a great deal in 2025, I'd get global insurance with the US coverage included. I'm hoping that it won't be too expensive if there's a global insurance option that remains affordable by limiting the time allowed to be spent in the the US per year.
@EatWalkLearn
@EatWalkLearn 6 месяцев назад
It sounds like you're on the right track. Our first year of travel we were in the US for a short time, so we purchased a separate plan just for those dates in the States.

Your video is very informative. Can you help these questions? (1) We want to travel the world (mostly Asia) for a few years (only come back a couple of weeks a year to visit kids), will have no US address and no US based health insurance. Is this doable? (2) Health insurance will wholly rely on something like IMG Global Silver (or Bronze) plan or Cigna global Silver, is this doable. Thanks.
@EatWalkLearn
@EatWalkLearn 3 месяца назад
Yes. Img global should work. (I'm not an agent so please consult one.)
