I am kind of surprised when he said that people love to hate on Glover. I have never heard anyone say overly negative about it. Most people I have heard talk about seem to say that, while not the best, Glover is a pretty enjoyable game. It is interesting how people seem to live in different spheres.
Right, even all the other RU-vid personalities I watch like NitroRad and AntDude thought it was at least decent. It’s also on many underrated N64 games lists.
@@bbworks159 Caddicarus reviewed the PS1 version, and he said it wasn't all that bad. Maybe it's just Jirard feeling frustrated and disappointed after he tried to complete the game
I remember this game going from 'kinda frustrating' to genuinely 'pretty fun' the moment I turned off the setting that reversed your controls when you stood on top of the ball. That one change alone made ALL THE DIFFERENCE for me, turning Glover from an exercise in frustration to a moderately enjoyable experience. If Jirard never made that change in the settings then it's no wonder the controls frustrated him.
Yeah, I wondered what he was talking about. I always played it with non-reversed controls. Reversed controls are horrible for gaming. You can do reversed X axis for flying, but that's about it. They're worse than tank controls.
I guess I'm the only one that likes the reverse controls when on the ball I always thought it was cool cause your actually going backwards so it made sense
18:54 Dude what are you talking about you have it exactly the opposite way, Glover is often brought up semi-fondly with this video being the thing that is uncharacteristically negative (no hate btw, these really obscure games are a real love it or hate it deal).
Nah I have seen a lot of hate irl for Glover. I recall bringing it in a pile of other games and my friend was like "how dare you bring this in my house."
Yeah I've really never heard anyone say it was bad. Just like "hey this game is kinda cool and unique but not the best game" is the sentiment I usually hear.
Glover is an all time favorite of mine from childhood. I'm probably the only person that had fully hoped that he was gonna be a wildcard add into Smash. Seems like a prime example of me being a better gamer as a kid, idk if I could play through this now. Maybe I'll pick up the PC port and give it a run anyways. Appreciate the nostalgia trip!
Right. If you had spent the last 2 years playing only N64 games then terrible camera controls and awkward platforming were nothing new. That was just how games were at the time.
it was one of the best 20th century games. had real fun, but frankenstein was real hard, never went past him until i found a bug to go to the last level but i got stuck again on the space robot boss again, not sure if i finished the game lol won’t do it ever tho
Missed potential is the keyword here. There is a lot about this game I enjoy, but the execution of the mechanics really tests my patience. I keep coming back to it, but I can only handle it in small doses. Also, of course 4 fingers! Not only because it's a cartoon standard, but also because we don't need to see Glover with a wang.
I do believe Jirard is the first G-Fuel sponsor person I know who has actively explained what the hell G-Fuel even is. Angry Joe has been sponsored by them many times, and I still had no idea what it actually was. Even Google wasn't much help. But here we have Jirard, within the first 20 seconds, loud and clear, explaining "it's a supplement that you mix in with your drink". Thank you, that's all I wanted to know! Did Joe just assume that everyone already knew that? I mean I could probably look at the packaging and put 2 and 2 together, but even then, selling a product means that YOU are responsible for 110% clearly communicating what EXACTLY it is you sell, even including "common sense" details so that even dimwits like me understand what you are selling.
For the record, G-Fuel also has pre-mixed energy drinks similar to Rockstar, Monster, Bang, etc. I believe they are all sugar-free, but there might well be flavors I don't know about.
Well it's basically energy drinks without the fluids that you add yourself. (Normally water) And yeah I guess it's kinda considered common knowledge by this point, atleast in the right circles. Although I'm pretty sure that you'll get a fair chance on being clued in on what it is long before you get the package in your hands, I haven't been on the site but I'm assuming that it's easy to find.
To be fair, most N64 games controlled like a greased cannonball. A lot of people our age are inundated with nostalgia when it comes to the old grey box but those controllers were absolute trash when it came to finesse movements. Even blockbuster games like Banjo-Kazooie suffered from poor cameras and clunky movement just because the controller was that bad.
@@kickassia2197 I agree, this really sums in up. The decision to use the inferior cartridge format in the age of high (for the time) storage space CD-rom and a controller that was like juggling a handful of bananas. Successful despite its flaws, but definitely flawed.
@@kickassia2197 It was also a very specific console. I mean, up until Paper Mario, it had absolutely no good RPGs, and even then, if you wanted to play RPGs, what were you doing not having a PlayStation?
So anyways, play Glover. It's super worth it, and despite some clunky controls it's hilarious all the way through XD Just don't play the Steam version, Piko is notorious for screwing with games' coding, intentionally, and really don't care about video game preservation all that much
I understand the disappointment with this game, but I honestly would give it a *Look at it* or a *Play it*. This game was fun for me growing up even with learning the mechanics taking me a while to learn. I don't see it as a great game, but I don't think it's bad.
Say what you will about this game, but the Atlantis level soundtracks are pretty good. N64 versions are longer while the PlayStation ones tend to have a higher bitrate. I prefer the n64 ones. There’s some nice remixes of them too
Great to hear people talking about this game! I played it 10 years after release because I saw it at a thrift store and remember hearing about it from a gaming magazine, back in the day.
I have to say I'm surprised you didn't like this game. I honestly feel it's a real hidden gem on the N64. So much charm and character. I have a few complaints, the bonus missions some of them are way too difficult but I still managed to complaint them. The frankenstein monster boss was just a pain but overall a fun wee game.
I can understand why Jirard had a hard time with the game. At least he tried to give it a fair shot. Also, if he dislikes the N64 version, it’s very good that he didn’t play the PS1 version…
This is super exciting to see this oddity get the Completionist treatment, shortly after putting together a fan tribute album to the OST. It's such a middling kind of game for its time
Welcome to my world of pain. When I recorded it 100% like 4 or 5 years back my save file corrupted 2 times so i said screw it and did the whole game in one go. It was painful
I loved this game! The unique gimmick, all the N64 platformer tropes, all the fun to be had with the cheat codes and the memorable soundtrack made for one of the most awesome budget games in the N64 era. Wish more positives could have been said about this game on this video, because there definitively are.
I remember absolutely loving this game as a kid. I didn’t own a copy, so whenever I was over at my cousins house I wanted to play it. Recently I revisited, and I’m not too sure what I liked about it. Excited to see this video on it!
I mean you could say this game had fierce competition but it's no contest. Ignoring the fact that it couldn't tangle with any of the good platformers or any good 3D game on the N64 that was out at the time, they brought this game over to the PS1 at a time when Spyro 2 was already out. This game had no chance.
I love Glover!! The controls are definitely archaic and awkward by today's standards, but I have beaten this plenty of times since I was a kid! I remember everyone who had a 64 owned this game :DD
This bring me back to good 'ol days, it wasn't perfect but I remembered having a blast with it. And a lot of comments seems to be this way too, is it really that bad? Or is it only bad for Completion? Because I can see why it can be terrible to complete, but just playing it wasn't too bad.
I went back to watch videos from Nitro Rad, AntDude, and Caddicarus, on this game. None of them were all that negative. They did have some complaints in terms of control, but for the most part, they all thought it was alright (especially Caddicarus, who reviewed the PS1 version, which, structurally, is the same as the N64 version, but with a different graphical resolution that doesn't look as good as in the N64). Perhaps Jirard just reacted negatively to the game when he tried to complete it, and couldn't take it anymore
since they were mentioned in the beginning, it's worth saying that piko interactive is not a supporter of games preservation and has a history of sending takedown notices to actual game preservationists keeping ROMs ( even ones that differ in build from ones they own / plan on releasing ) in order to monopolize access to them, actively don't believe that unfinished / unreleased / prototype games deserve to be preserved as-is, and replace logos from the original studios with their own branding for their lazy ports, among many other things. they're not a great company, and the shit they've been up to is very easy to find. they're very proud of being awful for games preservation lol
One of the worst reviews I've ever seen. The level designs are based on amusement park tropes, they're not "weird" there's a clear theme. Just watch the Nitro Rad review instead.
I remember being a kid and playing Glover and loving it. However, I never got past the first world and spend most my time in the overworld area. I don't know if I would actually enjoying playing it as an adult, but nostalgia has me wanting to pick up the new release. I love the music and have fun memories of it but I do agree it is far from a great game.
I wonder if Glover is like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES) in that both are well loved by those who grew up with them, but aren't actually good games.
Okay Jirad. I really hope you're trying to get out of the G-Fuel Partnership considering their announcement of venturing into NFTs and that you just couldn't do it in time for this video's release
the N64 release of Glover was NOT the one to enjoy. Any other control scheme was better for that game as the N64 controller was just to inaccurate for it. I say this knowing full well I played this game primarily on N64 and didn't get to experience it on a good system until much later
Actually, the analogue stick for the controller is incredibly precise. That's the reason nobody is able to make a good replacement stick for it. The optical sensor inside of it has an insane amount of precision and when it's replaced with less precise parts there are some games that simply break down because of inferior sensors skipping steps in sensitivity.
Just started the video, but am surprised to hear you don't think Glover is a hidden gem! Maybe I'm remembering it with nostalgia goggles, but my Dad and I loved that game when I was young!
I've heard the PS1 edition is much better so, I couldn't tell you from my own personal experience butthere's always that chance a lot of your gripes with this game are aleviated in that version
I feel like Glover is a game you can't completely judge until you've played all versions. The PS1 version has some needed improvements but is overall inferior.
The sponsor segment at the very start of the video feels like it's in poor taste. Do what you have to do to survive and thrive, but placing them before you've really earned the view on the video, eh.
you need to complete dark cloud one and two for the second game The only collectibles there is is like taking pictures of certain enemies doing certain attacks or finding scoops and helping people out so they can come with you to live in other areas here's a heads up the final boss of the first dungeon in dark cloud 2 you need to take a picture of its attack as it's filing a missile at you cuz if you defeat the boss you won't be able to get that picture and you need some of these pictures to create ideas for items and weapons.
Me and my cousins played Glover a lot actually... We kept challenging each other to actually beat ONE area, and I don't think we ever managed it before we got hooked on Super Smash Bros and the multiplayer in Conker's Bad Furday~ XD So yeah. I have a weird perverse fondness for it but even I went 'Oh no he completed Glover?!' the moment I saw this vid title XDDD You're a brave good soul - thank you for finally revealing for me that the rest of the game exists. I always wondered. XD
I remember playing this with my best friend back in the day. Usually after Battle Tanks or the army man game. It was weird and that's all we cared about. I can still recall doing Glover's voice back and forth. "SHAZAM!" More fond of the memories than the game.
Glover is a game I owned when I was young, thought it was just kind of okay, then traded it for 30 or so Pokemon Trading Cards including a Golem which I didn't have, not the worst deal in the world ...now giving away Smash 64 along with it was where it became a dreadful deal and I wouldn't own Smash 64 and Glover until almost a decade later
Will always be one of my favorite n64 games, was the first game I 100% and as a poor kid that got the game for $1 for my n64 I couldn't get enough. The game is cute and has a lot of personality, I think the mechanics just arent for everyone
I’m honestly surprised you mention how much people say it’s bad. Your video is the first time I’ve ever come across anybody saying anything negative about this game. Personally, it was one of my top ten favorite N64 games and I’ve been yearning for somebody to make a spiritual successor to it.
Glover was so ambitious, that if it was measured in weight, the game would be crushed under its own ambition. Needs a lot of work, but glover can be its own stand alone game.
I played Glover a lot as a kid because it was the game that came bundled with my N64. I loved the novel game mechanics that required you to transform or even abandon the ball to solve puzzles, but I never did finish the game and was convinced one couldn't without cheat codes. I also remember the controls being a hot mess, but this game still holds a strange place in my heart.
It feels kinda cringe to see Jirard hate so much a game that the general opinion is generaly positive. The problem isn't that he hates the game, it's just that he tries so hard to make people understand how Glover is a hated game and that you should hate it too... when, well, it isnt. Glover is a game known for being kinda there like Croc with people having good memories of the game and others who heard that it was a above average experience. It's okay to hate the game, but asking people to hate it too isn't. Saddly, for me this is one of the weakest video on his channel. But hey, there will be other videos.
I normally play through the first 4 words and stop. The last 2 just aren't fun. Glover isn't a bad game just a disappointing game. It has the skeleton of a good game but it's like they just didn't have time to do what they really wanted.
even though i liked the game back then, i have replayed it recently and it is quite bad and mostly boring. glover falls into the "rental" category. a few hrs on a friday night and maybe sunday afternoon after church, then off to blockbuster. a better game within this rental selection, i would put the chameleon twist games.
I heard that back in the day of the First Super Smash Bros game there were rumors that Master Hand was Glover I don't believe those in fact I'm pretty sure Master Hand is supposed to be Sakura but that's a Rumor I heard existed back then
If you want to support efforts of Video Game preservation then please dont support PIKO Interactive. They take down other preservation attempts and stamp their logo over anything they get a hold of
I had this game, I loved and hated it so much. I only had it because my parents would only let me get games from the 5 dollar bin. I got Bomberman Hero and Glover. I do still love Bomberman to this day.
Current world record speedrun of thid game is 23 minutes and 26 seconds so I guess there is some folks out there who were all about that time trial challenge.
I rented Glover back in the 90s. I like the concept of controlling the ball, and what you could do with it. I actually liked the tutorial level, and as a result looked forward to the rest of the game. I was disappointed. I think what could have really improved it would have been a series of shorter levels that were sort of puzzle like platforming challenges. Using the ball in creative ways to get through more interesting levels. This would likely make the camera much less annoying with this kind of gameplay. Also, while it is a cool idea, switching between types of balls can be cut from the game
Honestly you're the only one I ever heard outright roast this game. Most other opinions I hear boil down to it being a flawed but serviceable game that happens to be everywhere
i spent the entire video listening to Jirard complaining but all i could think of was THIS GAME LOOKS SO FUN videogames you really have to try for yourself
@@BlueAizu_ But then Jirard could have expressed that it's a charming and unique game UNTIL you try to beat it 100%. Like how SomecallmeJohnny says he loves Mario Sunshine until he tries to go for 100%. Many games are fun to play casually, but not fun to complete.
