Lesson on the glucose-alanine cycle (Cahill cycle), how nitrogenous waste is produced in the muscle, how the skeletal muscle “stores” nitrogen in the form of alanine, and how alanine is transported and processed in a liver hepatocyte. Skeletal muscle metabolism of branched chain amino acids, and degradation of purines and pyrimidines leads to the production of ammonium and other nitrogenous wastes. Since the urea cycle does not occur in muscle, the skeletal muscle cannot process the ammonium directly, and thus the skeletal muscle incorporates the ammonium into alanine and glutamine, which are transported to the liver and processed.
********NOTE: 2 Mistakes have been identified in this lesson.
1) Alanine aminotransferase is abbreviated ALT, not AST... AST is actually aspartate aminotransferase
2) The last step in gluconeogenesis in the liver is performed by glucose-6-phosphatase, NOT glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase.
I'm very sorry for the mistakes and confusion******
Hey everyone, this lesson is on the glucose-alanine cycle. In this lesson, you will learn about the importance of the glucose-alanine cycle, how nitrogenous waste is produced and “stored” in the skeletal muscle in the form of alanine and glutamine, and how alanine and glutamine are processed in the liver to recycle the carbon skeleton and nitrogenous waste in gluconeogenesis and the urea cycle, respectively.

The final enzyme of Gluconeogenesis in the Liver (and not in muscle) is "Glucose-6-Phosphatase"...not Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (which is used in the HMP shunt).

shouldn't it be ALT for alanine aminotransferase?

The liver is able to produce Glucose in Gluconeogenesis because of presence of the enzyme Glucose-6-phosphatase (and not Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. This enzyme is part of HMP shunt pathway and not gluconeogenesis). Muscles do not have Glucose-6-phosphatase, hence can not produce glucose. Rather Glycogenolysis in muscle is used to feed glucose in the form of glucose-6-phosphate into anaerobic glycolysis to meet the energy requirements of muscles.

what's the result when you react glutamate with glutamate dehydrogenase enzyme?
@frankalexpeters7510
@frankalexpeters7510 3 года назад
In the presence of an oxidizing agent [NAD(P) +], Glutamate releases Ammonia ions and becomes alpha-keto glutarate.

alanine aminotransferase: is abbreviated as ALT or AST?

Whoa! Thank you so much for catching this! Alanine aminotransferase is ALT...AST is actually aspartate aminotransferase... :( Very sorry for the confusion. I'll try to correct this :)
@weewoo74618

It should be ALT i think. AST stands for aspartate transaminase
