Glycine is the smallest amino acid and it offers a vast range of health benefits. It's a multifunctional powerhouse that plays a pivotal role in nutrition and metabolism. It's cheap and it's sweet! A kilo cost under $20 US. It's sweet, so you can put it in your coffee!
2-3g a day is an adequate intake of glycine. But a therapeutic dose may be around 20g (upper limit is not established). In an article from Pubmed*, a detailed assessment of all possible sources of glycine shows that synthesis from serine accounts for more than 85% of the total, and that the amount of glycine available from synthesis, about 3 g/day, together with that available from the diet, in the range 1.5-3.0 g/day, may fall significantly short of the amount needed for all metabolic uses, including collagen synthesis by about 10 g per day for a 70 kg human. This result supports earlier suggestions in the literature that glycine is a semi-essential amino acid and that it should be taken as a nutritional supplement to guarantee a healthy metabolism.

Consuming more of a supplement doesn’t mean it is used by the body. As we age our hormones decrease. This absolutely impairs the body’s ability to extract nutrients from our food. Menopausal women need to replace their estradiol. It makes all the difference to so much of our health!

Collagen and gelatine contains just over 20% glycine. You can add collagen to deserts(creme brûlée anyone)with eggs and gelatine which make up a complete protein, (there’s no tryptophan in collagen and gelatine but plenty in eggs)as well as adding collagen to filtered coffee, protein shakes and greek yoghurt.

Glycine in bulk in the U.S. is 20-30 dollars. Along with other supplements when most of us are deficient in just about everything needed for good health, that is pricey. I cook bones in water for 3 days for my dogs so I guess I will go with sharing the bone broth when it is basically free since bones are usually discarded.

Have you increased your dosage? I had not heard about taking it in the am prior to the first meal, always at night. Plus since it assists with the sleep cycle I’m curious as to the morning impact. I take about 3 g every night but might try increasing in the morning also. To the other commenter: No hair loss issues. It promotes collagen synthesis so I can only believe it would help with the hair structure.

We need ascorbic acid and silica to produce collagen in our bodies. Magnesium and sulfur like MSM same as boron or borax also help.

Sadly yes. I just check on the 1 kilo price and it was £24 at Bulk. However they do many deals and the one I saw today took 70% of the glycine price if you spent 30 quid and used a code. I do see deals all the time.

I think it was suggested not to take Glutathion supplements. Instead supplement NAC and Glycine which the body uses to create Glutathion.

@Rainer Blessing That's correct! Glutathion must be produced by the cells themselves. So we support that by supplementing with the two limiting amino acids: Cycteine and Glycine. The first one from NAC (N-AcetylCysteine). Glutathion is unsuitable as a sup0lement because the body has to break it down into amino acids, and then the cells may utilize them to build up the Glutathion again. And Glutathion supplements are too expensive. Not just unsuitable.

@Dee Yardo 0.4 g / kg bodyweight is something used in research. It's a medical dose, not a supplement dose for general purposes. A 100 g (3 Oz) steak has about 2 g of Glycine. That tells you what's reasonably. For sleep, about 4 g doses at meals and before sleep has been suggested. That's also rather much. I take 2 g of NAC and Glycine 2 times a day, mostly for Glutathion production. Collagen is an excellent source of Glycine, and complements so called full proteins, such as Whey and Egg-protein. And one of the main reasons you want Glycine is for your bodys Collagen production.

@Jeff Lovell No, TMG is one Glycine bound to three Methyl groups. It's used to supply the body with Metyl groups, usuall when taking very much of vitamin B3 to increase NAD+ ptoduction. The body spends Methyl groups to get rid of any excess of B3. Glycine is an excellent storage vehicle of Methyl groups! But utilize Hydrolized Collagen (tastes bad. I take it in green The) or Glycine supplement to get Glycine. That's also much cheaper.

@Archie GJ Everything feeding the body feeds cancer, if we already have it. One thing which prevents cancer is to have healthy levels of Glutathion in our cells. It protects the mitocondria from the ROS it creates. NAC and Glycine supplementation restores the level of Gkutathion which gets lower as we age. I would suggest it prevents us from getting cancer. But when a cancer escapes the immune system, it's a different story. So, what I do is try to maintain the immune system and avoid hurting the mitocondria. So Glutathion!

@c. k. Biology is very difficult. We wouldn't live if we had to understand it all. I can assure you that it isn't Glycine itself that causes your problems. You have some inbalance which is triggered by it, but not really caused by it. Glycine is involved in the heme production. Do you have a problem with blood production or blood values. I'm not a medical doctor, so this is just an uninformed thought! What I would do is look into my overall nutrition and health.

Thank you for the video! Glycine sounds great. A word of caution, however, about taking N-Acetyl Cysteine -- it can make you temporarily diabetic, with very high blood sugar. I ended up in the emergency room (lobby -- my symptoms eventually passed) one time after taking an NAC supplement.

Certainly. Magnesium Bisglycinate is one part magnesium and two parts glycine. Great for sleep and anxiety.

I wouldn't take glycine on a fast. Glycine stimulates the secretion of a gut hormone that slightly increases insulin levels..... though minimal compared to sugar. The sweet taste of glycine is a bonus!

Glycine depletion inhibits holoceruloplasmin... that's NOT a good thing. Holoceruloplasmin is the master antioxidant upon which all other endogenous anti-oxidants rely, not to mention the clean oxygen activation, iron recycling and hemoglobin creation.

@@l.r.t.781 Glycine is an amino acid that is in meat and what the body self creates! FDA not considering it "generally safe", doesn't mean it doesn't consider it safe. It depends on the dose, and they don't know if you can eat huge amounts of it without adverse effects so they removed the "generally safe" designation and for example limited its use to 0.2% of a beverage. Obviously, glycine is safe in the right dose if the body self makes it.

gelatin is a poor source - the processes for making it allows for difficult nutrient absorption .
