Before (big block) gasoline engines go away, I wish Ford would make a 7 liter version of the Coyote engine. Use the same bore and stroke as the 427 FE. Yes, it would be bigger and longer than the current engine, but at roughly 780hp and still driveable, it would be the meanest naturally aspirated crate engine ever.

The 6.2 can be taken to 7.0. and while still sohc, it has massive semi-hemi valve angles, and dual spark plugs allowing for a shit load of fuel and air to be burned..

Both are great engines. They just use different philosophies. I love the "do more with less cubes" from the ford. I also love how responsive the LS & LT engines are from very few mods. Whichever side your heart aligns with, you should be thankful for the competition always upping the ante. Because we ultimately benefit from that with a big grin every time you mash that go pedal.

Wish more people had this mindset. I own a mustang but love the LS/LT platform and one of my dream projects is an LS Swapped 77/78 trans am and my dream car is a C7 Z06 Corvette.

@@travelinman482 because a modern LS/LT is smaller then a big block chev/Pontiac, more efficient, can make more power and has far greater transmission options to boot. You get the best of both worlds when doing a swap like that in a hot rod. This all coming from a die hard Ford Guy. I'm toying with the idea of actually doing a 7.3 swap in my Fairlane as the aftermarket grows for that engine.

@@rexmilanista Liked your comments. Now, are you talking about more [stock] transmission options? Cause there’s several companies that make aftermarket transmissions for engine swaps, etc. Also, you can make any BB engine build some serious horsepower and most importantly, torque. Dr. Olds used to build some bad ass 455ci engines in his heyday! There’s already a 7.3L Godzilla engine on RU-vid that’s pushing over 1,000 hp.

u can thank GM for the 10spd transmission but stock still 12.6s -13.6s not so impressive and that engine comes with 4 cams so is way more expensive to mod than the LT or LS

I've driven both. The 6.2 pushrod v8 Chevy makes is great for low rpm grunt work, endless torque on demand to where you'll find yourself doing hillclimbs without dropping a gear. The Ford 5.0L is great to play with at mid to high rpms and never feels short of breath. Both have positives and negatives. But at the end of the day, you won't be disappointed to own either of them

It's the joy of getting to drive all maker's designs that makes it so much fun to switch manufacturers every few years when a new version comes out. Getting old ain't bad, since I can now afford a new car every few years. That house I bought in 1977 for $40K and sold for $625K turned out to be a good investment, when I moved to a retirement home that only cost us $50K.

@D.E.B. B must've been nice buying houses in that kind of market. I bought my first place at $325k in 2017, bought a second in 2019 for $488k, and a third last year for $460k. If I were building my investment in your market, I would probably be over a dozen houses in the same length of time. But that was a different time, back before our government destroyed our way of life.

It really does not though. In fact, It does not reach peak torque till about 5krpm. It is the opposite actually. It will still tow, and make a lot of power, but it can’t compare in power to the 3.5 EB, or a diesel in low end torque.

The Voodoo engine is probably the greatest engine made to date by an American manufacturer. Powerful, high revving and an intoxicating exhaust note. It left it's mark on every auto manufacturer, both domestic and import. The GT350R is one of the quickest naturally aspirated cars on the Nurburgring ever.

@@smokepeddler I have both Ford and Chevy Silverado 1500 5.3 , Ford F-150 FX4 5.4 . every time I have to work on that Ford . absolutely kick myself in the ass .. everytime I get to work on my Silverado ! I'm like hell yes more power what can I do today ! the only thing I will do to that F-150 is a tune . my 97 Z28 LT1 was actually easier to work on then this ford... I'm with you , but even if my Chevy doesn't make 300,000 miles I can still rebuild it easier ! And have fun doing it..

@@banette36 Agreed. my 99 1500 Silverado is so Easy to work on. Everything is accessible and easy to reach. I had a 97 f150 and you had to remove 10 things to replace anything. Both good trucks though.

Really great video. I own all three engines LS, LT, and coyote. All 3 are great but I just love the simplicity of the LS. Glad to see you are an engine guy with an open mind and not just a fan boy. That is hard to find these days.

@@stephenhodge6441 its a smaller displacements motor that pushes more hp per cubic inch. It revs higher and has a broader power ban. While both motors perform well the coyote is a better motor. Doesn't need 6 liters to produce 1xxx hp. I also personally think the ls motors are superior to the lt tech. I know some of the ls heads flow way better. Now each motor has its short comings but I would chose the coyote everyday over a lt and a ls. The modular motor lineup of Ford even there 5.4 dohc 5.2 dohc 5.8 dohc motors you can push 800 plus wheel with a pd blower and have power from idle to redlibe. Yes you can fo the dame with a lt. Comes down to power per cub fords motors are superior

I'm definitely a V8 fan, without a doubt. Had a fastback Torino Gt with a 390 4spd sold it when I bought first house. Got rid of my '89 Gt 5.0 fox body a couple years later when we had kids and needed a family car. Been regretting this ever since, but I do still have a V8 truck 🤷🏻‍♂️. We also had a 5.3 LS in our 2002 Tahoe, but my son wrecked it🙄😡. I am old school, but I do love these new engines too. I've been wanting a new mustang for a while and if I had my choice it would be the GT 350 with the voodoo, even though the gt500 has the most horses. My neighbor just picked up one of the new Camaros and it's sweet too. You can't go wrong with either. I'm just glad we still have all these options. Hopefully we will have them for years to come, as long as the government doesn't ruin things 🙄. Thanks for the awesome video!!!

It’s funny the Coyote is a good engine for a half ton truck and does have decent torque for “reasonable” towing, however guys buy it and expect it to pull over its capacity and say the engine is no good it doesn’t make any torque. I wish people, even mechanically educated people, would use common sense.

@@powderriver2424 I love towing with my 5.0l, now that being said I wouldn't say it's a good engine for towing. It's doesn't make alot of bottom end grunt especially on regular fuel. The coyote loves premium, empty most won't notice a difference in power except I get a 1.3mpg average better fuel mileage. Now towing, especially on a hot day, premium really helps the mid range power. But unlike the Chevy v8s the coyote pulls strong all the way till the transmissions shifts, making the gears have a longer usable power band. A stock Chevy V8 truck engine seems to run strong up to 3800 rpm and then kinda falls flat, its still pulling strong, it just doesn't gain much after that.

I have a 2011 Ford F150 with a 5.0L Coyote V8 in it with 140,000 miles and still going strong and its a beast and it sounds like a beast with the Borla ATAK exhaust. For me I prefer the Coyote V8 over the EcoBoost V6 anyday of the week because I don't deal with turbos breaking because its NA and it sounds wayyyyyyy better as well.

I've had the pleasure of owning cars with both the LS and LT, as well as the latest gen Coyote and the Voodoo 5.2L in my GT350R. I must say this is the best explanation of these motors that the common enthusiast can understand without being an mech. engineer. Well done. New sub.

@rross27 those are all some really cool builds you have had. Personally, I've had both the new LT1 in a 17 Camaro SS. And currently have a 19 Z06 with the LT4. Love both in their own way. The LT1 was a manual with 455/455 in it and she would rip and loved to be "beat" on. LT4 is the same, but you have to be careful as the car is super expensive and the engine is ridiculously more powerful than anything I have ever had. Probably going to get another ZL1 or Z28 in 26 for the last year of the gen 6, Vette will be paid for by then and more of a "show" car. Keeping her stock. Hope you can get your hands on either one in the near future, you will not be disappointed!

@@Hey_Blinkin the coyote is a different monster, it doesn't slap you in the face as much, but it's just insane how it just keeps pulling, and pulling, and pulling, yanno the LS motor might make peak around 4500-6k, meanwhile we're revving to 9 and making more power the whole way there. Completely different, but I prefer the coyote, and fyi if you want a really torquey coyote you can put a cam ground for torque in, like off the f150, and all of a sudden I can't tell much of a difference, but it's much easier to put aggressive cams stock in a DOHC motor so that's why the performance version get such aggressive cams from stock.

@rross27 I had a ‘96 Z28 and the old LT1 got a bad rap due to people using junk optisparks but it was a hell of an engine in its day. It held its ground until the LS1 showed up to take over. It didn’t take much work to get some great results with it.

I prefer the higher displacement, compact design, and simplicity of the LT. GM has done wonders with the pushrod design.

I'm a chevy guy but a Ford v8 sounds so much better. Had a few old school 5.0 ho fox bodies, shorty headers, h pipe and Flowmasters sounded amazing . The coyote sounds fantastic as well. I do prefer the low-end grunt of the ls

I grew up in the dismal low hp era of the 80's. I absolutely love seeing these high tech, high hp, high economy engines coming from the factories. I wish I was a young kid now, because it's so easy to make big power.

6L LS uses a 4" bore. 6.2L LS and LT uses a 4.065" bore. (6.6L LT as well)

Bang for you buck...LTX wins. Easier to work on, more mods available, more common parts. You can build BIG power on both platforms though.

I was getting 26MPG out of a TPI 89 Firebird with a T56 behind it @ 75MPH mind you. I verified this on 1600 mile round trip. This car was making about 430HP and over 500ftlbs of torque. Of course that year Firebird was very aerodynamic and I had taken about 300lbs out as well as smog pumps. Not saying the new motors are not impressive but.... I think I could build one today maybe get another MPG or two and maybe another 40HP with modern electronics.

I had a Chevy K30 dually truck with the 350 in it. 3spd auto and 4.10 gears. It got about 7-8mpg. Once I swapped a 12 valve Cummins and a 5 spd in it, I had 230hp, 605ft lbs of torque and get 25 MPG. And that truck has the aerodynamics of a giant brick spinning 6 tires and 2 axles.

FWIW, I also have a Gen 1 5.3L LT in my 2000 GMC Sierra, it’s also a FANTASTIC engine! 211k miles and still purrs like a kitty!

I am almost done with my degree to be a powertrain development tech and have gotten to take a few coyote motors apart and the older DOHC cobra motors and as much as I have gained respect for them I still don't want to deal with 4 cams and all that timing and the heads can be really tedious if you do not have the skills or experience on these types of motors. I think for simplicity and for someone looking to learn easily on a motor and make really good power without spending gobs of money you have to go with the LS or LT. The voodoo is absolutely ridiculous and is definitely not something to put down. Not too many people really realize just how different these powertrains are. Love the video! will be watching more

Thank you for this very honest and very fair comparison. Just one small detail - the manual transmission company name is Getrag, with just one 'R' not two in the name. On that topic, before I get criticized for nitpicking, here's one for you: would you want someone to mispronounce YOUR name? Overall, great video. I myself have a 2011 f-150 5.0L with 319,000 km on her with a 13L per 100 km fuel average.. I do my maintenance well before fords recommendation, and this truck has never let me down..

Impressive comparison. Rare to see this level of unbiased review. Great level of explanation. I have owned an LS and now have a Coyote. Both are great engines. I am really impressed with the power, refinement and efficiency of the Coyote. 5.0L and right there with all the other larger displacement engines. I tow with mine so I appreciate the power. Keep up the great work. I also agree the Voodoo engine is an amazing piece of engineering.

Great video, I like both platforms and have done swaps on both. I think it would be great to see some videos of the durability issues that the two engines have. Camshaft issues with the LS/LT engines and the oil pressure issues with the coyote.

Great video! My buddy has a corvette and I have a Mustang GT. I feel the LS has low end torque but the coyote just keeps pulling towards the end. In my opinion, maybe the coyote is better for manual transmissions cause you can play with it more. There both great just different.

The Coyote also went from 302 cid to 307 cid with the Gen 3 updates.

On the new gen 4, they went back to 302. They had to make a thicker plasma sprayed lining, making a smaller bore, for durability.

Exactly. It looks like the Y block but they also took cues from the Ford Windsor with 10 bolts on the heads and no longer using siamese exhaust ports as the SBC did. The LS looks like the combination of two Ford designs put together. I like both the Coyote and the LS. Go USA.

@John Stone Yes it did. There are a lot of similarities with the Ford Windsor and with a little machining you can make an LS head fit on a Windsor block. They all take ideas from each other.

11:45 the LT dynamic fuel management was a nightmare with cylinder deactivation literally killing motors faster than without it. Definitely no a contribution to reliability...

I am gm fanboy, but like mentioned in the video, I am fairly unbiased as I respect all American car manufacturers. Imo GM and Chrysler didn't wanna do a cylinder deactivation system.. let's rewind to 2005-6 when the epa was cracking down on big honking displacement engines. Ford went in the way with downsized turbo 4/6 bangers to please the epa. However GM and Chrysler wanted to keep giving the people what they want, the people still wanted ohv V8 engines but the epa wouldn't have it, so D.O.D later changed to AFM for gm and Chryslers MDS systems was designed to please epa standards, that's why gm and Chryslers included these systems in their cars and trucks. Even though it's a terrible system for reliability, they still made it extremely easy to do a physical delete, since they can't do it from the factory floor, they can sell you the parts and information to be able to do so

@@anthonycosta1776 How big of an impact does tuning it out make? I got a '20 SS manual so it doesnt have it from factory but from what ive read on different pages, getting it tuned out or having the manual doesnt really save you from the lifters failing.

Enjoyed this video as I own both an '11 Mustang GT with the first gen 412 hp Coyote 6 speed manual and a '19 C7 LT engine Stingray 7 speed manual, and your analysis is spot on... When I drive the 'vette I really enjoy the low end torque and acceleration. The Mustang pulls well, but over a longer period and not as viscerally. Both engines are masterpieces of engineering... The Coyote gets about 24-25 mpg on the highway and the 'vette will do 30 mpg if I activate the AFM and keep my foot out of it... It's satisfying to get a 500 mile range on an 18 gallon tank :D On the occasional track day, the Mustang struggles as its suspension and brakes aren't really intended for the track, it has like a 60/40 weight distribution, making turns more challenging, while the 'vette was designed from the jump for handling with a 50/50 weight split. Both cars do really well on 11+ hour road trips as well.

Great video, so thanks for sharing. I have a planned engine swap from my LS3 to a larger displacement LS-style build. There's no way I could use the Coyote in my build for many reasons. However, I would love to split the difference and pick up the Mercury SB7 but unfortunately, those heads wouldn't fit in my vehicle.

@@mikeymike4329 honestly this, alternative fuels made using nuclear power are the real right track, put our motors on propane/CNG, alcoholic fuels, hydrogen, etc. We can still have them and make amazing power with them, but at the same time be FAR cleaner, and then there's hydrogen fuel cell cars, you can rebuild their parts when they eventually crap out at quite low cost, they have a very small battery, and they put out water, great for you everyday Joe who only goes a to b, meanwhile when a tesla goes out of warranty they all but force you to junk it for a new one, can't crush them though because then you let all the nasty battery stuff out and ruin equipment and possibly kill people. But no we gotta support Chinese lithium production that probably creates more pollution in a year than all the cars made from 1990-2000 that are still on the road have in the last 3, including those with removed emissions equipment.

As soon as you turbo, at eg 20psi, and there are serious airflow demands, the Coyote demolishes the LS due to the 4v vs 2v design.

Bullshit. The LT head flows *better* than the Coyote, with less than half the overall mass, and parts. You really fail to grasp the fundamentals of turbochargers if you think an S480 is going to make more power on a 5 litre engine, than it is on a 6.2 litre engine. Especially when the LT head flows *better* than the Coyote, and sports 60-80 more cubic inches of displacement. You need to binge a little of Richard Holdners channel, you could learn a thing or two...

@@jamesgeorge4874 Richart Holner has just demonstrated that a 4v i6 Atlas engine demolishes the 2v when the turbo boost is turned up. Physics mate, 4v = more flow. This is why all supercars have an engine design like the Coyote, ie, 4V DOHC VVT

I love coyotes owned a 5.0 mistang and now a 17 f150 im building. Its hard to beat the affordability of the LS, but coyotes are just as fun and make great power

The other great thing about the 18+ coyote is that you actually have double the fuel system after a retune, so you can supercharge/turbo them to a higher level without worrying about fuel.

I have a 67 mustang. I am staying 351w 5 spd. Love the new Ford motors. But I see no reason at this time. To cut out my shock towers, Making room for a coyote engine. Motor already puts down 500 to the tires. NA

I love a Windsor. They are my favorite engines. But as far as new engine swaps go. It might eventually be more ideal to do a 7.3 swap over a coyote. You at least wouldn't have to cut out your shock towers.

Went through the engine build experience for my ZR1. After assembly they weigh the engine, as they fill the oil by weight not by volume - 590 lbs for the LT5. Prior to owning the ZR1, I was driving the GT350 - and you right. The engine is absolutely amazing. I enjoyed driving it even after I picked up the ZR1. It is something completely different and great in it's own way. You really have to rev that engine out. It doesn't lack low end torque, but it is noticeably less then the LT5 even before it gets into boost, and honestly it makes it more fun to drive on the street in a lot of cases as you won't kick the back end out at lower rpms with more generous throttle input. It blows people away the first time in it when you just hold it in gear forever. The LT5 is just amazing torque and power everywhere. There is not wrong gear or too low of an RPM - if you floor it, it will send you back.

The Coyote being shorter front to back than many V8s actually suprised me. I'm in the process of replacing my Gen 1 Coyote short block with a Gen 3 short block. I was able to pull the engine out of my 2012 GT without removing the radiator or fan. I also had enough room at the firewall to get to the bell housing bolts very easily. The only hickup I had was having to detach the steering shaft so that I could pull the engine with the exhaust manifolds attached. The coyote is really not that complicated to work on either. I think the DOHC setup seems to make people think that it's just a huge ordeal to work on. It's not. The Timing chains and sprockets are marked, so you know exactly what goes where, it's pretty hard to mess up.

In your chart for the LS 6.2, the top HP should be 436 due the the NPP exhaust in the Vette.

Im a ford guy and that coyote engine is an absolute jewel! However, i still hold the LS in that #1 spot for engines. Just so much diversity and aftermarket support to make crazy power in an engine thats pretty damn small in size, not displacement since almost all of them are over 5L. Sick video, love learning about stuff like this, keep it up!

@@saltydog7988 Tho the budget and size constraints are heavily exaggerated by some Chevy guys to prove the LS is better for builds. Mod for mod the Ford actually beats the Chevy most of the time in power increase especially boost. It's a little more complicated in size and budget yes, but in the end it will be closer than people like to admit since the Ford doesn't require new parts or to completely build the engine, the OEM parts take massive abuse so you end up not spending money on those at all.

I would take a pushrod engine over an overhead cam engine anyday I am so glad that GM stayed with the pushrod engines for the 20+ years when others went cheap and overhead cam.On GM, you do not have all the timing chain headaches .
