This is what I'm talking about. No rambling bullshit, no terrible camera angles, just pure unadulterated information delivered in a calm and soothing manner. This is ASMR for driveway mechanics. Thank you!
This has to be one of the best if not THE best videos on how to troubleshoot fuel systems. Only someone who is selfless takes this much time and puts this much detail into their videos! You just earned a subscriber. I can’t thank you enough. My son and I are troubleshooting our 98 K1500 no start after rebuilding the top half of the engine. Again, THANK YOU!!!
Thanks to your video I was able to fix my '95 G20. It needed a fuel pump relay connector. Thanks so much for taking your time to educate and help others :)
Thanks for the tips. Neighbor has a 92 Silverado that would stall like every 5 minutes. First the pick up coil in the distributor was replaced and truck ran fine for months. Same symptoms again, replace same pick up coil, still shutting down about every 5 minutes. Found out the fuel pump was shutting down. Listened to various videos and replaced fuel pump relay and then oil pressure/fuel switch. Ran for another 5 to 7 minutes and fuel pump stopped running again. Checked ECM for power to fuel relay and had power with key. Pulled relay and powered pump direct with fused 12 volts. Fuel pump ran for 5 to 7 minutes and stopped. Found out that truck was stolen years ago and a remote kill switch for fuel pump was added. A long story now shortened, kill switch was getting hot and interrupted power to pump. Replaced switch with a switch rated for proper amp rating and fuel pump operation now fixed. Patience is key in troubleshooting! Thanks though for the video!
EXCELLENT..I love your style, casual, informative and proper technique without all the tech toys. I've seen volumes of car repair videos but this is one of the first ones I have actually watched intently from start to finish fully satisfied. What makes your teaching style a perfect fit is that you troubleshoot with the same resources that I have-a digital multimeter. a test light and your trouble-shooting flow process which gets us down to the actual problem & solution. Beats running back & forth from the auto parts store just buying parts. Lastly you reflect on repair as a whole and consider what collateral concerns should be addressed with the repair. I think its awesome how you tied the Fuel Pump Relay to the Oil Pressure Switch and referenced all to the schematics, Thank you
Thank you for taking the time to make this video .I just applied what I learned and looked like a genius where my friend had his truck being worked on but after replacing the distributor ,plug wires, plugs etc.the same problem was happening. He asked me to go down with him and take a look and see if I could see anything. Of course i had asked for the year and make and watched this video prior to going down there and I can't tell you how surprised everyone was.Of course I didn't tell them that I watched this video prior to going down there but I just was amazed at there stunned faces Thank you again Scott
Thanks for taking a big problem (3500lbs of truck that don't start/move) and turning into a small problem...By using LOGIC and very simple tools to say the least..I call schematics "road maps" you need them to figure out where you are and how and how to get un-lost..simple! Thank you job well done!
I was having some trouble figuring out how to install a kill switch on the fuel pump signal on my '92 Chevy Suburban. Your explanation of how the fuel pump relay circuit works was just what I needed to understand where I needed to splice in with the kill switch. Thank you so much!
WOW....schematics FINALLY make sense to me. Great Video! Especially the fact you did everything old school as well as posting the diagram while explaining the relay. It really simplifies everything making it much easier to digest. Thank you!
i always knew the fuel pump oil pressure switch to cut the juice to the fuel pump in case the motor lost oil pressure to shut it down - your videos are the best i seen - to the point and bs free
Hey THANK YOU...i was having some issues with my truck, 97 Chevy k1500 and was thinking I had to change the fuel pump...I didn't do all the test that you did but went right to the parts store and purchased the relay....started right up...You saved me time and money...great video...thanks again!
Ab-Ra-Fricking-Ka-Dabra! Just like that. Thank you kind Sir. I was raised by a mechanic and you just changed my life with your explanations of what-wire-does-what on a relay and MORE! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
I always hate searching you tube for videos cause so many are poorly done. You made an awesome Video. Well thought out and good video quality. I really like that you give the Schematic and explain what you are doing at each step. Again great video and very helpful.
Just did this with my 1999 Tahoe and it was the relay. Thanks for your help! Already had the new pump on hand before deciding to try this. Saved me a ton of work!
Mr Robinson you make a very good and INTERESTING instructor. Very clear. Knowledgeable and great use of schematics flow charts. I am a retired Vocational instructor of 30 years. So when I tell you are a very good instructor you ARE!
I can hear fuel pump at prime and have no fuel at shrader valve on my fuel rail.. Pump and filter have been changed within past couple yrs.. Its got me mad lol. I may have to change pump again.. I held that vavle in and had friend hit key nothing
This auto technician is showing us something that is just so valuable. These "methods" are priceless. I am trying to learn auto-electric, and guys like this on Robinson Automotive have taught me so much. He's one of the Best on RU-vid.
Excellent video my Tahoe was doing the same thing, used a wire and it crunk right up. Used a extra fuel block now my truck is running good!!!! Thanks....
Thanks for this video. I just got my 87 chevy working again. I was about to drop that gas tank but wanted to make sure it wasn't something minor first. Did the test in the video and solved the relay issue.
What was wrong with urs ? I have a 1987 chevy v20 put a brand new electric fuel pump and cleaned out tank had someone install it turned and i was able to drive it around just for 10 mins after it wont turn on wont pump gas?
Best instructional video EVER! I am restoring a 1987 Chevy K5 Blazer and this video is the reason I was able to drive it from the storage yard to my house. Thank you so much for this video.
WOW! You just saved me a bunch of time, effort, frustration and money brother! I REALLY appreciate this video and the way you broke it down, simple for the the average 'joe' (me). Followed it to a 'T' and it solved my problem with my 1999 GMC Suburban. Can't thank you enough! Keep up the GREAT work and God Bless!
Top of the line video thanks your mechanical skills are sir perv. With your Insight I have learned a lot. I am having the same problem with the same motor and with your process of elimination I found my problem it was my relay also what a headache
This was a fantastic video. My fuel pump in my 89 K1500 wasn't working, and honestly automotive electric kinda scares me. I should have followed your video first, but being daunted by the electrical stuff, ended up replacing the entire fuel pump and assembly first. After that didn't solve my problem, I turned to the oil pressure sensor. Again, didn't fix the issue. Finally, I realized it had to be electrical, which was terrifying for me to deal with. Went back to your video with a new sense of desperation, and tested my relay. The numbers on my relay and yours didnt match since we have different vehicles, but the way they operate is the same, so I was able to match up which ones did what, and ended up successfully jumping it with a short piece of wire. Looks like I'll be buying a $8 relay tomorrow, and the $80 fuel pump and $30 in sensors lets just chalk up to "preventative maintenance"....
I thought this video was extremely well spoken and clear. im a pretty decent shade tree mech, but I still learn things all the time. ty for sharing. i'll be watching more in the future.
been having same problems as you show on 87 gmc w/5.7 like the way you do the old school test ! worked on my truck got it running thanks for the video!
Awesome video! After my trusty old Ford Explorer suddenly died with a trailer full of cardboard flatpacks on the way back home from IKEA the other night, I now need to chase down some gremlins to bring it back to life. Following your "mechanical / spark / fuel" checks, I determined that the engine cranks fine, then I hooked up a fuel pressure tester I got a few months ago when my 14 year old fuel pump could only muster enough pressure to run at idle. I installed a new pump, and all was well for a few months, but now I have 0 pressure. No wonder the car wont start or run anymore. I suspect the relay is also 14 years old, and thanks to your video, I know how to test it. Thank you!
A fantastic tutorial! Thank you Robinson's Auto! I found my 97 GMC 5.7 would only run on the fuel poured in the carburetor to prime it. After watching this video, I immediately went to the step where I jumpered terminal 30 to terminal 87. I heard the fuel pump start, but the engine would not run. While the fuel pump makes noise, I fear there's trouble with the impeller or something related to the fuel pump. I guess the next step is to verify fuel pressure at the manifold. This is going to be a little more difficult to do as I'm not equipped to do so. I hope I can find enough parts to assemble a test gauge. A loaner gauge from AutoZone showed 14 PSI at the fuel rail by the throttle body. Looks like it's time for a fuel pump. I have a new pump assembly in hand. Will also replace the fuel filter. As the tank had just been filled to the top when the pump failed, I'm not looking forward to dropping it. I'm not looking forward to raising the bed either. I'm going to cut an access hole in the bed of the truck. I like that simple approach. It's an older truck, and I can make a nice access cover. The access hole in the bed of the truck is the way to go! Be careful with dimensions that you find online. I found two different sets of dimensions and both were wrong. Following them would have given me a useless hole looking at the top of the fuel tank where there is no fuel pump access. I determined my own access hole location. It was very close but I had to enlarge it slightly once the hole was opened. Contact me directly if you would like my dimensions for a '97 GMC Sierra SL. 8-foot bed. C2500. 3/4 ton. High GVW. 8400 lb GVW. 34 gallon fuel tank. I'll be glad to forward you the dimensions for the hole location. The most difficult thing about changing the fuel pump was loosening the fittings when the lines transitioned from steel to rubber. For details how I was successful, feel free to contact me as well. Perhaps I'll make a video someday.
i did the same thing he did with relay but my truck wouldn't start. Ran out just like he said only to find out that my relay was good. So it must be the B1 sensor oil pressure switch. This guy is good. Thumbs up from Detroit.
Thank you for your thorough review... In case it helps, simply using another relay with the same value and swapping it out may be faster... If the horn relay is the same, then switch it (sound the horn) and test to see if that is all that is needed... I am sure you know that too. Rafael
Took me 2 days figure it out, replaced ICM, and fuelcut/ oil pressure switch no issues since. Wish woulda found your channel, but was a good learn of my trucks systems for me.
I really enjoy watching these videos I like the way you explained the diagnosis, also I like the way you troubleshoot it, and challenge the viewer on what to do next, I think that is so cool, so I hope you are still making videos I really enjoy them thank you, for your help,
This is an Excellent ! Video and should give anyone watching this series a no fail fix to this particular common problem. Its a Great explanation on how to interpret a schematic for this circuit . It shows how to confirm a good ground using a test light which many people have trouble understanding a ground circuit and its role . My father-in-Law has a 1990 Silverado with this exact problem . I Have Subscribed ! Thank You !
Great video man... Thank god for you and thank god for the Internet you just saved me a whole bunch of time and labor ... I could have swore my fuel pump was bad... Turns out I had the same issue... Bad relay... Thanks again
Thanks for the great video. I seldom subscribe or leave comments but this video was so helpful and informative I was compelled to do both. Great camera work, and perfect and easy to understand explanation of the schematics and troubleshooting process. The split screen description of the circuitry and testing was awesome. I just wish I'd have watched this before going through the hassle of draining 20+ gal of fuel, dropping tank, and pulling apart the fuel pump only to find nothing wrong with the pump.
Great info. video! I enjoyed watching and learning from this. You explain all so clear and with captivating ability. You should be an automorive instructer. I learned some things, thank you much Mr. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you for the kind words and feedback! That was a dream of mine. Not sure if it will ever happen but I truly enjoy sharing my knowledge on here. It’s my way in a way lol
Many thanks for the down to earth, old school troubleshooting methods, even though my problems have to do with my fuel tank switching valve on my 87 Silverado, you've given me some food for thought about what else to do. I hope you might have other videos that might relate to that issue as well.
that was a great educative video , thank you for the time and effort to teach us all on thuis subject matter , i have a friend i have been helping since today : he owns a working pickup truck made : Chevrolet , yr 1990 , class K1500 , Eng : 4.3L V6 , last week i helped him replace entire front differential and axles with new upper arms and new sway bar adapters and replaced shocks with new to size ( the mechanic cheated him by installing cheap grade P 70 , rather P125HE recommended ( this made the vehicle drive with no problems ) , today ? he was driving and suddenly the truck choked and died out , symptoms : it cranks but wont start , checked : fuel pump, fuel pressure , sparks , distributor , distributor modules , spark plugs , wires : all came negative : working fine . EGR : working fine . cam valves : i checked them through view point of Engine oil cap off , they are cranking fine . the Question : what do you think in your experience causing it not to start ? i am thinking it has to do with compression ?
You are in my books a true professional/ Your video was very thorough yet to the point. You taught me a lot in a little time. And I thank you sir, for not wasting my valued time. I will be sure to subscribe to your channel and look forward to learning more from your videos. And ma God bless you and those who you hold near and dear to your heart and soul.
Dang Man, that was an outstanding video. Can't wait to watch the next one with the oil pressure switch troubleshooting. I also need to go to beginning as I don't recall if the fuel pump was cycling. My 88 K2500 is cycling but I did notice the oil pressure build slow and the voltage looks like its taking a big hit during attempting to start. This all began on a cold snap and my opportunities to evaluate have been limited. This will give me some possible options to analyze tomorrow. Natural born teacher you are indeed. Great job!
Excellent video. I was just getting ready to get under my 95 Silverado and check the fuel pressure. I will have to watch this a few times to understand the circuits but excellent explanation.
this video helps alot gmc, chevy trucks like dtc 54, is a problem with lots of people changing dtc 34 (map) and dtc (43) when you get a dtc 54 check your fuel relay and your oil pump switch these two work together that's way you get a carking bout no start, ,dtc 54 says fuel pump circuit fault or mixture control but won't say check your oil pressure switch. but some people think it's the fuel pump (some times)..
Good work mate, using basix tools that anyone would have. Just what I needed as I don't know anything about automotive electrical repairs. All the best from Australia. 🙃
Really well done and you may have saved me a lot of work! My symptoms are very similar and I was about to drop the tank this weekend to replace the pump. I'll now run through your instructions to verify I am getting correct grounding and supply voltages. Thank you very much for creating this video!
Thank you for your informative video! I'm sure to advance my mechanical aptitude with your thorough step by step tutorial. Much respect and gratitude for your service. Thank you sir.
I wish I watched this video earlier I bought all new battery, alternator, and starter still didn't resolve my problem. I want to thank you for this video very helpful you explained everything I needed to know very well
Great tutorial! Thanks! I had a problem with my chevy venture where it wouldn't start. I tried spraying in starting fluid into the air intake and it briefly started. It sounded like the fuel pump energized. So I replaced the in-line fuel filter and it started ok.
Very good video. Thank you for going step by step through the diagnostic process. Regarding the oil pressure switch mentioned at the end of the video - I believe that is to cut off the power to the fuel pump should you lose oil pressure to avoid catastrophic engine failure rather than provide an alternative power supply to the fuel pump should the relay fail.
Great info. I used this info to determine if mine was out... and it was! Thank you very much for the well thought out and great pace to understanding this problem!
Awesome Video!! I'm troubleshooting the same issue on my 96 suburban. I'm going to go and do the jumper thing and see if the fuel pump turns on. Thanks
Mr Robinson Thank you for making a Retied Vet very happy. The question I ask, can you please show how you made that test light cause here in Germany real test lights can't be found thanks again for how you showed me so much
Great thorough explanation . If stuck on the road with no tools , you could swap another relay with the same number of pins . If you had to hike to the parts store , you could buy a relay if no other one is available . And also some brake cleaner . Give it a small amount of brake cleaner through the air intake . Obviously , if it runs there is an issue on the fuel side and not a spark problem . That oil pressure switch is also good to check . I don't believe there is a Schrader valve on any GM TBI systems to check fuel pressure . Thanks .
Man... YOU HAVE NO CLUE... How much help you have been to me! That is exactly my problem! Going straight to Autozone and buy that part! Yayyyy... ;) YOU ARE AWESOME! My hero literally!
Awesome explanation, and will work on most if not all vehicles. We have GMC here in Australia but most drive Holden Commodores and Fords. Holden is a Sister company of GMC but the engine in the commodores is a Buick V6 Ecotec, is it possible for you to start doing some video tutorials on this type of engine, from basic trouble shooting to a rebuild. Thanks again for helping so many people understand how to diagnose issues. Regards Markuss
just wanted to add, you brought up a good point wish i would of covered the control side more in the video, now if the logic would be set up to kill the relay once run signal was achieved then yes that would work like that however gm didn't program the logic in that manner.what would of made more logical sense is if gm used the pressure switch to deactivate fuel when run signal achieved with loss of pressure, to protect the engine. most accident protections use a inertia fuel shut off switch
Absolutely fantastic video, I think you could be an ivy league professor if wrenching doesn't work out haha ! Thanks very much for sharing, and teaching!
AWESOME VIDEO SO HELPFUL. DUDE YOU TQUGHT ME SO MUCH THIS WILL HELP ME WITH MT S15 THANK U THABK U THANK U I THOUGHT I WASNT HEARING THE FUEL PUMP KICK ON AND NOW IM ARMED TO FIGURE OUT FOR CERTAIN.
Will I have looked high and low to find someone that could show how to check this particular problem out. My wife has a 1989 Chevy Blazer K1500 that just died on her way home. I know my way around with a wrench a little, but this computer controlled stuff always throws me for a loop. I'm on SS thus a very fixed income. You Sir have been a God send when I found your channel. Your explanation and visual presentation is just what I needed. Seems I had a complete system failure. Replaced the fuel pump and everything seemed ok, till my wife broke down again. "May" have been my fault for not attaching the fuel pump relay back on to the fire wall. Never the less, fuel pump was ok, your computer test was spot on. Bad computer, bad relay and bad oil pressure switch. All fuses and fusible links were fine. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Will. I need to mention that my service manuals have the fuel pump wire as gray. It is in fact tan with white tracer to fuel pump as is the oil pressure switch fuel pump lead. Also on this Blazer with Cruz control, the rotor cap must be removed and the distributor needs to be loosened to get at the oil pressure switch If you are ever in the North Western part of SC, I owe you and adult beverage or two at the very least. Thanks again Will.
thanks bro this video was so very helpful ....after switching the tank and fuel pump i see this video and fixed my problem thank u very much u will be blessed
I'm glad his truck started but I wish it was something else!!! That's not our problem and this is the best video I've seen yet because he sticks to the basic equipment that DIYer can afford...that's why most DIYer don't take them into the shop, they can't afford 6-900 dollars of damage. Our car hasnt run for 3 weeks now, something to do with the security and we cannot find the problem!!! I was looking for new troubleshooting and some of this was new but not enough to help yet..But NICE
awesome, you're an excellent teacher... you should teach auto mechanics at a vocational school--you're that good. :) And for the 7 miscreants that gave this video a thumbs down, I'd just call them incorrigible--they cannot be taught. :/
I gave you a 👍 well spoken and explained, even though it did not solve my problem, 1993 Chevy pickups are a pain, the wiring schematics that you can look up do not match, also my fuel pump relay has letters not numbers. I'm just trying to figure out how to hook the factory relay up to my aftermarket wiring and computer for ls swapped
