As a Lightning owner, I am glad to see it get the win, but the Rivian is a very compelling product. If it met my needs (mainly bed size and rear seat room), I would likely have gone that route. Very interested to see where the company goes in the future.

I'm surprised you talked about frunks but failed to mention the Rivian gear tunnel (and potentially the tanto cover). That gives the Rivian more lockable waterproof space than any of the others.

Rivian halted the problematic powered tonneau cover production and there are plenty of tonneau cover options for the Ford..... and the gear tunnel is a poor substitute for a frunk, when it comes to ease of loading and unloading...

@pstoneking3418
@pstoneking3418 Год назад
The power boost is a great truck. I would've got one if I was going to do a lot of long distance driving. Our charging infrastructure just isn't there yet for all electric. But all my driving is done locally and can charge at home so I bought a lightning platinum. It will tow 10,000 lbs and even though the platinum payload has been reduced because of the trucks extra weight it's plenty for my needs because anything really heavy I hook up my trailer. I guess one of my favorite things about an EV is no more gas stations, no more ICE maintenance. 9.6 kw generator that also doesn't require any gas. That said, EV's certainly aren't for everyone.

As someone who is going to use this for my small renovation company and as a daily driver, I think it ticks the boxes for me. However, I do agree that all these vehicles (and others coming out) have benefits to suit a person's needs. I always laugh when people say "durpa durp durp this is garbage! What about towing my camper across the country?" To which I reply "Friend, maybe these aren't the vehicle for you"

Excellent comparison based on categories chosen. Regarding the Hummer charging curve, I agree the software is unfinished. The oscillations in power look like the battery is overheating so power is reduced until cooled, then higher power is applied. It’s an on/off function instead of a variable automatic adjustment based on battery temperature. They need a linear ramp down in charge power as the battery reaches a high state of charge.

Great comparison and something I’ve been waiting for. I’d still probably go with the R1T since my primary reason would have been off road and it’s the strongest in that category. If I can also offer my unsolicited 2 cents about the rating, if you assign marks, say 3 points for first place, 2 for second and 1 for last across each category then when you add them all up it may more easily communicate which one is first second and third. You did allude to that when you said the R1T was second in most of those categories but before you made the point it felt weird that it and the hummer were equal.

Great comparison review, however I felt the Rivian’s gear tunnel should have been included in one of the storage categories, frunk or bed. It obviously would still have finished 2nd, but it is a nice feature that the other two don’t have.

Definitely a review focused on work truck capabilities. Ford wins hands down. That’s the market they already own. R1T and Hummer are a niche market for people that don’t plug a welder and table saw into their vehicle. Things like comfort and fit and finish are a more important consideration for a lot of buyers. The top trim package for the Lightning and R1T are in the same price range, but the specs clearly favour the R1T. The smaller size of the R1T is also a plus for a user that just needs a 5-passenger truck to fit in the garage for charging.

Great comparison video, Tom. I agree with you in most of the categories. I would select the Lightning because it seems to be more focused to existing truck owners. I like the roof capability of the Lightning much more than the other two. I really don’t see any advantage (for me) of the removable roof panels on the Hummer and I like to be able to close out the sun. Unfortunately, the biggest drawback of all of these is range and time to recharge when going long distances. Towing with an EV really seems to reduce range significantly (based on other RU-vid reviews on the Rivian and Lightning). Price is still too high as compared to ICE and diesel trucks. With increasing interest rates it becomes a greater challenge for many people who need a truck for small businesses.
@barryw9473
@barryw9473 Год назад
Tom, thanks for comparison. I agree VERY large packs attached to VERY inefficient vehicles need OBC rated for 80 amps, and owners may want to consider getting dedicated 80 amp circuit, but for most people, a 50 or 60 amp circuit is sufficient. I hope you stress this more because for majority of EV drivers (M3 and MY are majority today in USA), the car is efficient enough that 8 hours of charging (while sleeping at night) at 16 amps feeding car will replenish over 100 miles of range, more than adequate for most people. That being said, 32 amps feeding car is over 200 miles of range in 8 hours of sleeping. 400 amp home service is way overkill for almost anyone and just about anyone with 100 amp or 125 amp service has panel space and spare load capacity to add a 20 amp (16 amp EVSE) EV circuit, if not load share a 30 amp dryer circuit using a smart splitter. To get more people into EVs we need to be honest about EVSE needs vs wants, which I know you understand. When I exhibit my lowly e-Golf at car shows I always talk about daily replenishment and not focus on maxing out OBC. Granted, the Hummer is woefully ravenous.

They must have done some updates because my new 2023 Hummer starts in the 300s with DC charging starting at around 20% SoC and will hold 220-180 all the way to 80%, where it will dive to like 70-80kW for 80-90 and lower from 90-100.

This guy either has shares in ford, or got bought out. The lightning wasn’t even built from the ground up to be an Ev. Wait until the Silverado comes out and probably the ram. It will make this ford lightning look like the half step it truly is. Rivian is by far the best out of these 3.
@dmandman9

He only compared the Trucks available at the time of comparison. So the Silverado is irrelevant. Also, there's inherently nothing wrong with being based on existing architecture. I like the videos you produce and this is a nice comparison video. I do, however, disagree on one thing. Does the Hummer EV have sun shade panels to block sunlight if it starts getting too hot? And then if you do remove the panels you've got to put them somewhere, like in the frunk, taking up space and being a little annoying having to do that. I think the F150 actually wins in the roof category.

I guess it depends how you use your truck but I would definitely give the number one spot for charging to the lightning. For me, 99% of the time I charge from home. With 16miles per hour, the Hummer would be last place for me by a country mile. I could careless how fast their DC charging ever might become for the few times I would use it. That is over 6hrs to get a 100miles. That is unacceptable... I don't understand how you can even consider that to be the best charging when the bulk of charging is done at home.

Good luck with that wish, but ICE vehicles catch fire much more often...For example. Hyundai just had to recall ICE vehicles....Due to them, catching fire.... Nothing is perfect in this world....

I would say the rivian roof wins. Sure it needs a blind but that can be added aftermarket. Opening sunroofs are just leaks waiting to happen and make the car far weaker in a crash. The hummer roof is just stupid and adds massive amounts of weight to the already overweight vehicle. With such big packs and such low max charging rates they all have poor charging systems. Hopefully that can be fixed with software. You should be able to hit 3C. The lighting and rivian are great first EV trucks and hopefully the next models can find ways to double the battery capacity and cut weight. The hummer is a joke and hopefully GM go bankrupt for good this time

@B.L.A. Just look at fords F150 track record. This being fords first all electric truck. Do you honestly think ford didn't build it as good or even better than they have their F150. And the fact that ford is determined to eventually go all electric. Common sense says the lightning is probably the best F150 that fords built to date. If you can't see that, you are obviously just not a ford person. But if you're even considering an all electric truck. Best you look into BUILT FORD TOUGH.

Without having the data but I’m willing to bet rivian picks up the W for charging and would give it the edge over the hummer. Hummer imo should not be the winner at all, it’s just a weird concept for a EV.

It will be more interesting to compare ford’s ground up EV against these. Rivian gets an extra point from me for that.

Why??? Lightning proves from an engineering standpoint, that the bespoke architecture meme, serves no useful purpose.... Other than for marketing.... and fwiw ford uses bespoke elements, where they make sense, such as its ladder frame.... but it shares other parts, saving money...

This is bogus. You are comparing a work truck with two off-road trucks, as though they were all work trucks. Doesn’t matter that they are electric. You are comparing apples to an orange. I get it. You aren’t an off-roader. So what? You are comparing a road truck to two off-road trucks, and you dramatically skew the criteria toward the road/work truck category. So guess which truck wins? Give me a break.
@johnpoldo8817
@johnpoldo8817 Год назад
This is legitimate comparison because very few truck buyers only do off-road. Most truck buyers do off-road, working, and general transportation. Clearly, they don’t buy two trucks, one specialized for each function. If you look closely at how Americans often use pick-up trucks, a majority of miles driven could be done with a sedan (ie, shopping, visit grandma, commuting, etc).
@williamelkington5430

@@johnpoldo8817 Some trucks are designed to perform well off-road. Some aren’t. The market segment that the Rivian and Hummer were designed for-optimized for-isn’t seriously considered here. If it were, the Ram TRX and Ford Raptor would have been included. You can compare anything to anything. But market segmentation is a real and meaningful thing. It has been largely ignored here.

@@williamelkington5430 These are the only 3 all electric trucks on the market today. It's a comparison of 3 all electric trucks. Which actually shows exactly what you said. For off road driving the Rivian and Hummer win hands down but for regular driving and comfort the lightning wins hands down. So I'm not sure your comments about how these 3 trucks were compared to each other mean much of anything. GREAT COMPARISON VIDEO. THANKS!

@@pstoneking3418 Propulsion system and market segment are different considerations. Yes, you can compare products with other products outside their market segment. But to what end? What is the point? How does doing so illuminate anything? You can compare all electric sedans to one another. Or all electric SUVs. Or all electric vehicles. But why would you? The point of product comparisons is to help people consider what they might want to buy in the market segment they have interest in.
