It's been a long time, but it was a fun adventure designing GM_CONSTRUCT_13 with HighVoltage. Yes, that's me, the co-creator of the v13 construct, and yes, it is an unfortunate last name. Pronounced "rap-pee." I still have all of the VMF files for the different versions of the map, such as the tunneled version. In case the facepunch thread is gone, I could always re-upload them if anyone wants them. Thanks for making this video! :) If you have any questions about the development of the v13 construct, I will try my best to answer them. For example, the apartment building next to the lake used to have lighting, stairs, and floors in it, but Garry asked that we just empty the building out intentionally to leave it as an open space for building inside it. Or how Garry asked us to add a ramp to the grass displacements near the pond for the airboat and cars to ramp off of and into the pond. The tunnel version of the map was probably my favorite version.

I own the gm_construct jacket and whenever I wear it in public I am guaranteed to see someone that notices it.

I love the fact that people still make gmod content like this and its one of the reasons why the game is still alive. You can literally do anything in the game and the only thing stopping you is...well yourself. Great video as always man

I remember eagerly playing the Gmod 13 Beta. It was an amazing experience to explore that early Workshop and just get ready for what was planned.

It's like seeing a video tour of a house you haven't lived in for years, then going further back and seeing how it's changed among various owners and its own blueprint. Very cool :)

Dang, the gmod 10 main menu brought me back so many memories. Thank God Garry saved all the older versions of construct. Recently went and played all of them. The gmod 9-12 construct version gave me a nostalgia punch.

5:02 Getting credited in the secret room was pretty cool. I annoyed Garry enough with the global table hacks I had to done in WireMod and other mods to inject code that he gave me commit access to what was going to be v12 to add a bunch of UI stuff we and other mods would want. I found out years later that I was credited on wiki for working on the UI system, which I beleive is almost entirely replaced by as new one now. v11 and v12 were the main gm_construct maps during my era working on gmod. Not sure on the timing of the legacy map pack as I seem to remember versions of that from pre-workshop-support, but that might have been community made packs and recreations. Its nuts seeing how gmod is still going today.

I've recently decompiled the map of GM_Contruct to see how the map was built and what surprised me was that there is an unused layer in the map data with a ton of brushwork hidden. It was actually either an early version or a part of the 3D skybox. It's those mountains in 7:25. They are still in the map file just unused.

It really shows what kind of legacy this map has when a completely unrelated game, Ultrakill, has its own recreation of the map for its sandbox mode that they let you experiment in. Truly an iconic map

Fun fact, when GM13 construct was being worked on, ideas and design was sourced from threads on the facepunch forum and assembled together into the final level. This is what the credits room is about. I did some work on the backdrop for the level. hence "Stinger21" in the credits. :)

gm_construct is such an iconic map that the Ultrakill developer decided to use it for Ultrakiill's sandbox mode lmao

Would love to see an updated gm_construct. The closest we've gotten are workshop submissions, but I hope it expands in the near future. Great video.

Hey! I like the British map from S&Box, it looks very real and open enough to build anything. The streets are perfect to test out vehicles. My only complaint about that project are the sausage-looking characters, i wish they were made more realistic instead of so cartoony by default.

sometimes I wish I was born a bit earlier to experience at least some of the old gmod versions, it all looked really fun.

I still remember when v5 was installed in the computer room at the school I went to and it was the most impressive thing most of us had ever seen. Then the next couple of years spent excitedly anticipating new version releases, and flash cartoons and places like newgrounds were still the in thing. What a weirdly awesome time for the internet

I remember when Gmod 13 came out and it blew my mind as a kid, it was a blast waking up to explore the new areas and see all that changed. I remember finding the secret room under the ramp naturally and it creeped me out so much. It felt like stumbling upon a conspiracy or something.

Today, 2023 I played a lan party with my friend from 5 p.m. circa to 5 am. Gmod flat grass, core memories that will last forever

200+ Hours here out of 2000. That was the baseline of maneuverability testing and other tests for add ons, phys objects and etc. Plus, it was my standard starting map for my group escapades back when Evolve was needed for LAN party hosting over WAN... Good times.

it's crazy to know that gmod_construct 1 was released a day where i wasn't even 4 years old

4:35 the colored lights were actually to demo a new feature garry added to lua particles. In this version particles could receive lighting for the first time, which had been impossible with lua particles (and kinda not really supported by the built in half life 2 particle effects either) so it was a big deal at the time, even compared to other games. Nowadays lit particles are relatively common, but not every game has them even now.

Holy shit the secret room on Gmod 10 construct has names on it I haven't seen since the Gmod comic era golden age on the PHW boards.

I have 1800 hours in gmod, most of those were on sandbox gm_construct. And if not that, some variation, like construct flatgrass. I definitely have some crazy memories of builds I made, scenarios and all that. I love gmod.

I always remember three versions of gm_construct: • The "mod" version, which is the darker construct with taller grass from GMod 9. • The "standalone" version, which is the construct with the colorable white room and islandless lake from GMod 11. and • The "modern" version from GMod 13, with the skyscraper within the map's bounds and the mirror room. I used to think of them as "old" gm_construct, gm_construct, and "new" gm_construct until very recently, but it's been nearly 11 years since then, so I realized that "new" wasn't so new anymore.

Marabou storks in some cities are "used" to clean garbage of streets.

I can still remember a RU-vidr who used the map and created a small game show there. The game show was called something like "Aperture Science Prop Wars," where each participant received a random prop and had to complete various challenges with it. Everything was also in the style of Portal and Aperture Science. The map stuck in my mind because it looked so surreal, just like in the GMOD Idiot Box. The locations that DaBoSchitt had chosen looked so real, yet also fake. This gave the world a certain allure, always drawing you in.

The version with the coloured rooms you thought were odd is my quintessential construct version as it's the one I put 95% of my playtime into.

I grew up playing a ton of gmod 9 as a kid then when i was like 16/17 i ended up buying gmod on steam (dang this was during the early 2010s) Construct is just such a nostalgic map for me I can only imagine how many childhoods are being shaped by it just like the generations before it
