I fished the New River in Virginia for smallmouth. It was early spring and it was an adventure. The way you guys handle these boats and rafts in this rough water is truly an art.

Nice to see a drift boat being used the way they were intended to be. Two observations though. One, I always have a knife on my life jacket when running water like that. And two, and there will be different ideas on this, I do not wear waders when running whitewater.

as a former guide i agree, especially the knife of course( always 2 you can reach ) as far as waders ... safety wise yup, i will say though i wore them as rain gear, always with a good belt

That's a good spot Jeremy! He did that behind my back lol! That's a sign the fish we're feeding on emerging caddis. When they come breaching completely out of the water they're hitting the caddis just as they reach the surface. It's good to swing a soft hackle over those breaching fish! Cool video. Been enjoying your channel. Grab yourself a rated lifejacket and maybe a swift water rescue course if you're gonna continue to run rivers like this. Also, once the water starts getting swifter and heavier, running a single boat is significantly more dangerous. Beautiful river

@@flyfishhunter I come from a whitewater background, so a jet ski jacket recieves my immediete attention. Look on NRS.com for more appropriate jackets. A Coast Guard level 3 jacket buckles differently, is made more durable, and there are even some fishing specific ones. A swiftwater rescue class will really open your eyes to certain hazards, and give you an idea of how to react if shit hits the fan. We're moving to Walla Walla and I'm really excited to boat, fish , and explore the PNW. Cherrs

Great video. Makes me want to get a boat and go! What happens to the bottom of the boat if you keep hitting rocks and boulders? Is it built for that?

It's a Clackacraft. There slogan is Fear no Rock! It does cause some minor cosmetic surface damage but the hull is guaranteed for a 100 years.

Kyle! That is such a good call! "Hello, Mr. Fly Fish Hunter?? Sir, all the fish are right behind you!!" LOL!!! Man, in all the time I spend editing this video I can't believe I never noticed that. I was definitely looking the wrong way. Excellent eye. Watching those fish leap like that tells me they were taking emerging caddis right as they reach the surface. Thanks Paul! Yeah I hear ya!! This river stresses me out a bit. It puts 30 years of rowing experience to the test every time. Drift boats don't even go on this stretch. Only rafts. But, it's so beautiful I love to float it.

Great video. Given that you normally anchor near the shore with dense vegetation have you tried single Spey lines to avoid back cast?
