Today I review the state of Gnome Shell on the Pinephone Pro. While it is similar to Phosh, it's still its own thing. For the purpose of this review, I installed Gnome Shell using postmarkedOS. The phone is definitely more feature complete than it was previously, but it still feels like alpha software. One of the surprises is just how much less polished than Phosh. I think for most people it is the better option if they want a GNOME like environment.
Squeekboard progress has been minimal, so it still isn't really useful for languages that require completion for entering complex characters However, it is a very nice basic keyboard.
It is also important to note that the actual software included between Gnome Shell and Phosh is basically identical.

I see the promise - the design language, when it works, is excellent. ...... But it really doesn't work very often Thanks for the update!!

I think it's just pretty awesome to have the ability using the same shell on desktop as on mobile, sharing the whole software stack. I mean if performance gets better, you can just stick it into a monitor and use it instead of your laptop.

Totally! I also think there is also a good chance that they just forgot to enable some optimizations during compile. What I don't understand is if it is the same stack, why does the file type not work correctly when opening a file. You would think the txt file would have open in what is obviously gedit.

@@bitterepic Looks like they haven't configured the default apps properly. For text files it's using the default text editor in GNOME usually which isn't set as you've shown. Unsure why it wouldn't be configured in a release though. The text editor you've shown isn't GEdit by the way. It's a newer re-implementation of a basic text editor for GNOME in GTK4 which is only called "Text Editor" now. I think it doesn't come with plugin support for example as GEdit does. Edit: Nevermind, the default apps don't list a text editor anymore... but I assume if they haven't configured those then there aren't defaults set for extensions either.

The night light changes the screen color (only at night, turning it on at day does nothing) it's not a flashlight and I assume it would work if you wait until night or manually change the schedule

do you use phosh normally? i tried sxmo it feels the fastest, but its a bit buggy out of the box i couldnt figure out how to get music to play while locked, plasma mobile is working pretty ok besides some wifi issues sometimes and its a bit laggy i find. i tried phosh a few years ago and it was pretty fast, but it looked a bit dated imo and the wallpaper couldnt be changed easily and caused a bit of lag, i assume its better now. coming from pinephone pro

Unrelated, but any advice on installing Postmarket OS to emmc through pmbootstrap? I've tried it a few times now, and the phone freezes during the startup screen and crashes.

i see a lot of what you are doing is wrong gnome has its diferences in the controll center, the bluetooth driver does work, the night light isnt the flashlight and to swip up on the lock screen you cant swip up from the bottom of the screen also the post market os version is a lot worse than the manjaro arm version, but i do have to say the manjaro arm version has issues updating

Edge runs a lot better than the 23.12 version. Hopefully there might be a 24.05 version.

I like this type of phone, but now I need 8 core cpu, minimum 8gb lpgddr4 ram and jack. The only thing if I will buy is for safety, opensource and display out via USB-C. Possible for desktop-like interface. Keyboard case is interesting, but not a very interesting because still just a little phone, not a tablet or laptop.
