Using an Arduino Micro and a Dual Concentric Encoder with Push Button we will make a USB device that can send the Keyboard Commands that map to the GNS 480 Trainer.
Items you will need:
Arduino IDE (if you don't already have it):
www.arduino.cc/en/Main/Software
Sketch used in the video:

Arduino you need is a Leonardo or Pro Micro (32u4) -- $8.99 USD. Just an example of the price...Not sure how long this link will be useful for. Just search for Arduino Pro Micro on Amazon.
www.amazon.com/OSOYOO-ATmega3...
Dual Concentric Encoder -- $12.00 USD. Comes with Knobs and is the exact one used in the video and the sketch.
www.propwashsim.com/node/15
Project Box - Pack of 5 -- $8.99 USD. Just an example for pricing purpose use anything!!
www.amazon.com/LeMotech-Plast...
And you will need some wire, solder and a soldering iron....

Great video! I have a couple of these Propwash encoders ordered, and I can't wait to mess around with them.

So it's been a few months... did you build something with them yet??

@@LesOReilly Unfortunately, I have not. I am shortstaffed at work, so I am run ragged by the time my shift is over. On top of that there are family medical issues which has been eating up my free time.

Great video. But how you will connect that to the actual game to work properly

This was not for use with Flight Simulator. This was made for use with the GNS-480 Desktop Simulator for people to familiarize with the unit. The one pitfall of the desktop tools was that you interact with the Knob so building this make it more similar and with a touch screen worked fine... For doing Flight Sim Stuff Look at my other recent videos on build a 3D Printed Autopilot and the code to interface with Spad.Next... I did make a 3D Printed GNS-530 using just a HID library (joystick like my 737 Gear Handle) but with the Auto pilot one we get to have Data back from the sim..

What flight sim are you using this with?

That is the Garmin 480 desktop sim ... not a flight sim.

Les, is there a way to contact you via email?

Ugh why? :). I only ask because I have had a few people send me emails asking me to work on their projects for them....I barely have time to do my own and don’t really want to spend that limited time working for free....

@@LesOReilly I'm putting together step-by-step directions for building a DIY Knobster - would like to refer to your video. Also, as a fellow pilot, I'd like to compare notes on simulation, flying, etc.

Les, thanks for the video..I got a PropWash dual encoder, but not sure which side of the included pub to mount the encoder on. You show that you put the headers on the side with the labels A, B etc. which makes sense to me so you can see the labels when you attach the cables. So I was thinking I’d put the encoder on that same side (ie, the side with the labels). But wondering if that will give the wrong result?

I have done ponds on either side. Based on the project. They don’t change which side it’s a pass through hole.

Les O'Reilly, my PropWash pcb is labeled differently from yours. It has capital AB and small ab - yours has two sets of capital AB. Les, I ended up putting the encoder on the side with the labels. The result: the smaller diameter knob connects to A, B and the larger diameter knob connects to a, b. Not intuitive, but it works. I think that would have been reversed if I’d put the switch on the other side of the PCB.

Eric Rolfe oh gotcha. I see what you mean now. That actually is pretty smart that they updated it :) to have labels that way. If you play with the assignments of the pins you can figure out the order pretty quick and then edit the Arduino code and try again :).
