Goalie goals were forever changed when this weirdo flew too close to the sun

For a while, there was no rule in the NHL that prohibited a goaltender's ability to race down the ice and try to score a goal for himself. And then Gary Smith happened. He could have been immortalized for his goalscoring prowess, but instead, he got completely rocked and the NHL stepped in to make sure no one tried his antics again. He still rules though.

Incidentally, if you've ever played any of the NHL video games as a goalie and wondered why you get 7 penalty minutes for a goalie fight instead of 5, this rule is why: one or both goalies have to cross centre ice in order to fight the other.

One of the wackiest things about this too is that despite Gary sounding like a hot piece of garbage in net, he actually co-won the Vezina (award for top goaltender) in 1971-72, so he wasn't nearly as much of a complete diaper fire as he probably sounds like. I like your alternate universe where everyone is a goal-scoring goalie. Something so normalized and intrinsic to the sport of hockey that we would have seen a video called: "Weird Rules: Goalies were not allowed to score until this weirdo did something awesome"...And then at the end of that video we would all imagine a boring world where hockey goalies are restricted to their nets.

"Sports rule books don't just come into existence." Reminds me of a recorded interview that Dr. James Naismith did about inventing the game of basketball. The first time that they played the game there were no rules other than the object of the game was for one team to put the ball in the basket and the other team had to stop them. Then switch offense and defense and the team with the most points wins. In the interview Naismith said that after about 90 seconds there were several black eyes, a lot of cuts and a separated shoulder as guys were tackling and brawling each other for the ball. He then wrote the original 13 rules of basketball and over time it grew from there.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the history of the NHL is so littered with strange, stupid and funny stories like this (as an example, the league was *literally founded* in a scene akin to the No Homers Club from _The Simpsons:_ one team owner in the old NHA, Toronto's Eddie Livingstone, was so hated by everyone else in the league that they formed a new league, the NHL, to get away from him) that y'all really should make more videos about it; more than a handful a year, if I can be frank. Having said that though, there's an amusing entry from the annual _NHL Official Guide & Record Book's_ history of major rule changes that I wanted to share, about a closed loophole that somehow _nobody_ attempted to exploit (emphasis mine): _"1931-32: _*_Though there is no record of a team attempting to play two goaltenders on the ice,_*_ a rule was instituted which stated that each team was allowed only one goaltender on the ice at the time."_

@brandonm949
@brandonm949 2 года назад
In this case, it was a really bad call that favored Oregon, and the refs were Pac-10 refs so it seemed shady. They said Oregon recovered a late onside kick, even though the replay showed an Oklahoma player recovering it. And an Oregon player had touched the ball before it went 10 yards, meaning Oklahoma should have gotten possession anyway. There was also a pass interference penalty after that, which Oklahoma argues shouldn't have been called because the ball was tipped at the line of scrimmage. There's no mention of whether or not that's true, so that call might have been correct. Both calls were reviewed by replay officials, who decided not to overturn either one. Oregon ended up scoring the game-winning touchdown on that drive. The Pac-10 ended up apologizing to Oklahoma, and suspended the whole officiating crew for 1 game.

Ah yes, back when NHL goalies were insane. I think it was because there was only 6 teams forever, which meant there were only 6 job openings for the position teams were LEAST forgiving of when it came to failure. That's a LOT of pressure to perform once you got a starting spot, because if you screw that up your career is done, no second chances. You could get bumped up or down the lines as a defender or a forward based on your performance, but as a goalie, you were only semi-pro once you became the backup, only good for practice and last resort while you worked construction in the summer to get by. Three years of starting with that kind of pressure as you attempt to establish yourself as a generational talent JUST TO BE WORTH KEEPING LONG TERM is enough to make anyone go crazy. Oh, and they used to play without head protection, so they were probably all brain damaged anyways.

I know right! I remember when Albany’s goalie went coast to coast, threw a spin dodge to split two defenders, and faked a shot before scoring. Glorious!

This reminds me of school when I was playing soccer with a bunch of my friends in the school league. My team was very bad and I chose them so I (a fairly decent goalie) would get more practice due to them defending rather badly. Our only goal happened when I made a save, dropped the ball, sprinted down the side line (50m), knocked it to the centre and had one of my team mates stumble it with his knee into the goal.
