I feel like Kratos had some sort of mercy for him, not only to help his son with the moms ashes but to at least help someone using his axe not to really kill but to help someone in need of it..... this game is quite something
Meeting his new best friend, closest confidante and advisor - the one (without downplaying Atreus' own role in all of that) who would help change him into what he never thought he could be; a good man.
@@TheGingiGamer Well, yes and no - yes he's already softened and become capable of self reflection and of trying to contain the primal fury within him for the sake of his son, but by the same token there's night and day between the Kratos we meet in GoW4 and the one we see in Ragnarok which he credits to "good council".
@@EmptyMan000 He seems sane enough, he's not suffering from delusions or breaks from reality - traumatized by his past enabling of Odin and the daily torture for 109 years definitely though.
some peoples lives are not bright. the longer you speak with someone the darking it can become and some people dont have a lot of pleasant things to talk about so they get there fast.
It's amazing how multifaceted Mimir's temperament can be. One moment he's a goof you can't take seriously and the next he becomes so serious it becomes captivating.
It's the perfect recipe for captivation... It reminds me of comedians like Robin Williams, James Acaster, Stuart Lee.... They take on this loud and boisterous persona only to subvert it with powerfully quiet moments of introspection.
And beyond that he’s actually an extremely complex character (I was so shocked at how much character development was in this game with Kratos and Atreus)
@@islandguy2535 I mean to be fair to him I think ANY eleven-year-old would get cocky and full of themself if they found out they were a god, he was trying to act like his dad (according to the novelisation of the game).
Azinnation well helios and mimir were very different. While helios enjoys his life while hes still alive, mimir was constantly tortured with new ways every day while hes still alive. I feel very bad for mimir.
@@basilofgoodwishes4138 technically you are correct in GOW universe, lmao. The number of greek god = 1.5. The number of norse god > 10. Therefore, norse gods > greek gods.
The scariest thing about this is its’s possible that just a few hours before Baldur came to speak to Mimir or perhaps hours after being freed, Odin himself came to torture Mimir. Perfect timing for Kratos and the Boy to show up.
Right! Odin was probably sitting in his hall, bored, and decides to go torture Mimir for some entertainment but realizes he's missing his head when he gets there.
3:55 I like the fact that Mimir's eye still glows as if he's still living, because he is at this point. You can live up to 10 seconds after being decapitated- you don't die instantly.
@@blainethebro8864 to be fair, it was, in the exact words that freya said, "a clean cut" meaning kratos probably did it too quick and clean for mimir to feel anything
When ever I play through this part and it gets to the part where minor says “he tourtures me you know? Every day brother… Odin sees to it himself and believe me there is no end to his creativity. Every.. single.. day. This….. this isn’t living.” I get chills and I really feel bad for him. How it must feel to endure that. I’m glad we cut his head off and resurrected him to bring along on our journey.
You know this is like the second time Kratos freed a god from neverending torture cursed upon them by the king of that pantheon's gods. Only this time Mimir actually lived. Sort of. Poor Prometheus...
To be fair, Prometheus' fire thing is still on Kratos... and has been on him for a good amount of games now. So, Prometheus is still kinda with Kratos, though just in essence.
@@BraveSoul71 mimir told his backstory he was a jester then he left got in midgard got smart worked for odin then odin started to worried put mimir on the tree boom kratos and mimir travel together
Mimir: I am the Smartest Man Alive! I have answer to your every question. Kratos: Why does Son of Odin hunt us? Mimir: okay...There is a gap in my knowledge. Baited 100
Well, Thor literally is confirmed in the secret ending of the game. When you travel home after the last sequence, you enter a cut scene where you sleep, it moves forward a few years to wake you up and the god of thunder himself is crashing down outside the home. It's a bad ass scene
He can also be a serious as he wants to be the “this isn’t living” line makes me want to cry every single time he is just a perfect character both comedy and in terms of wether or not he is well written
Fun fact: Mimir is played by the same guy who voices Senator Armstrong in MGR: Revengeance, Alastair Duncan. Versatility doesn't even begin to describe it.
It was a nice touch. He did say it a bit much though to the point that it momentarily broke immersion. It wasn't aided by the "GET UP BROTHER" after every death lol
viking culture. there are different forms of affection. mimir saw a piece of himself in kratos and felt familiar. i dont think mimir referred to anyone else as brother but kratos and his atreus
in different cultures it can be more common to say brother and sister, like in Arabic classes I saw female students were referred to as ''sisters'' who are learning Arabic, so I think it's not meant to be bravado behind it
2:56 this is the moment we fell in love Mimir. He may have been reanimated, yet still dead during the rest of the journey, but in a way, he lived, truly, with two friends who he was glad to help.
Atreus and this character are really what sold me on how good this game was and how much it stood apart from it's predecessor's. With the original games there was always so much darkness, aggression, and downright unpleasantness with all the sadness. Here we actually get characters who give the game some much needed levity and legitimately funny moments.
what is it with god of war games that you *Have* to have some kind of head in your inventory? at least Mimiir is funny and has a charming Scottish accent.
Gilberto Tabares Not just a head. A *talking* head. With amazing stories and sense of humor! Helios was better off being used as a powerful flashlight. Lol.
Gilberto Tabares yeah I agree man Mimir is one of my favourite guys in the God of war series because of that and they even got him voiced by one of my favourite Alfred voice actors from batman and I am happy they did that
Liamggbb123 Yea, I agree. Mimir was funny as hell and I loved to listen to him speaking about the gods. The voice actor is good. Brok and Sindri are great too. I think this game got one of the better supporting characters in years.
I can’t help but wonder though if the (Blades of Chaos) would’ve been able to cut threw those bonds if Kratos had them with him at the time since there power is foreign in any of the nine realms?
I just realized now, that in mythology, the All-father cut off Mimir's head, and keeps him around to talk to. Now that Kratos is the leader and new All-father, the mythology once more makes sense.
That and he probably got Prometheus flashbacks and remembered his nightmares. Like with the sidequest where the spirit wanted revenge on Thor for killing his mother and asked them to destroy Thor's statue, Kratos seemed way more willing to do that compared to the other side quests.
Honestly this is one of the greatest depictions of Mimir I've ever seen. The personality? Spot on. Same with the voice. I feel like they've really done Him justice!
The mixing of the mythologies actually confuses me. Like don't they have different creation myths and different theories about the nature of the universe? Which one takes priority?
@@sireregor6633 but that's kind of my point. The Greek stories of their gods and the titans weren't creation myths of Greece, they were stories about how the entire universe and all of reality were created. Likewise the Norse mythology of their gods, the world tree, the different realms and Ragnarok weren't restricted to Norway. They were stories about the creation of all reality and all worlds and the destruction of all people (not just Norwegians).
8Rincewind there is a theory and this is probably true where there is other earths for example midgard is a diferent earth that kratos comes from so the other earth
@@sireregor6633 to answer your first question: according to the novel kratos confess that he was brought by wolfs from greece to midgard by a mysterious woman which she was fey. so fey summon kratos. to answer your 2 question they knew about each other but probably to protect each other they probably agree to not interfere this proves it more since tyr was able to travel to many worlds in the game and mimir was friend of tyr so is very likely he learn about this things
Nonsense! Kratos kept all is inventory in his underwear. They do house massive balls of rage and courage afterall. Joking aside, hammer space is is always hilarious in any game. I busted out in ludicrous laughter when watching the Walking Dead game and character just animates sticking a 4x4 in his back pocket.
I love the way Kratos and Atrues both turn away when Mimir speaks of Jotunheim. It's like they're both on the same frequency for the first time. Cory Barlog has created a masterpiece.
It’s so cool looking back at the first introduction to one of the best and most iconic characters of the duology. It’s like first hearing Glenn’s voice on the radio. Hard to believe there was once a point when you didn’t have that head tied to your waist
Mimir and the dwarves and the midgard serpent such great and funny characters even though they don't even try to be funny it would be cool to meet ratatoskr as well in the mythology he hates odin so we may get to meet ratatoskr and help us get to other realms without the bifrost ratatoskr is a funny character as well i hope to see him in the sequel m
I’d really like to see fenrir the wolf in these games feel like he will be in ragnarok cuz in Norse he’s the one that kills Odin so my wild theory comes here. Maybe we need to recruit fenrir by freeing him from the chains (maybe something similar to god of war 2 with the titans) and he can help us in ragnarok by fighting Odin? Edit:freeing him from the chains could be a similar mechanic on how u free the dragons
@@punchoponcho5238 In retrospect, the shit i said here was out of my ass and kinda just speaking my love for the myth. I didn't actually think they'd add Ratatoskr in the game and would actually be our reason for the seed travel throughout the realms or would as well be a comic relief character as I've said lmao. Glad im right.
From "head" to "brother" in a couple years. Mimir might be the only one who has become part of a selected group who Kratos call it "friend" and the only member(alive) who Kratos call it "brother". Besides that Mimir is such a father to Atreus, what Kratos is not able to fully provide(in conversations) Mimir is there to aid.
It is so heartwarming, in a weird way, to see that they were both upset that they wasted all that effort to get to a mountain top that wasnt actually where they had to go
0:38 "Mimir! The smartest man alive, and I have the answer to your every question." 🗿 "Why does the son of Odin hunt us?" 👁️👄⚫ "Okay, there are a few gaps in my knowledge."
And there it is ladies and gentlemen, this is the best thing that happened ever to gow franchise, the best piece of both the games, MIMIR. these games wouldn't have been the same without him
This game manages to do something so many sources of media, from film to games fail to do. Introduce a character, catch your attention and keep you intrigued from the start, and in an extremely short amount of time manages to make you FEEL for the character, his swap from being a bit of a goof and cheerful to dead serious at 2:57, his tone, his facial expressions, his cadence, everything is fucking spectacular. And this scene is just one example of the many times this game manages to pull off fantastic story telling, pulling in it's audience and keeping them close. For me personally, I haven't been able to sit down and really play a game and have it retain 100% of my attention since I was a little kid. But this game, man I sat down and played until my eyes were closing on me and I had to rest, got up the next day and finished the game, I did every side quest, explored every secret, sat in the boat and listened to the games dialogue between Kratos, Mimir and Atreus always happy when another story queued up. First game I've Platinumed too, turned me into a bit of an achievement junkie. This and now Ragnarok will be games that I will always revisit, even in old age should fortune be on my side.
I just realized that the reason why Sigrun is the hardest Valkyrie might not be just because she is the leader of the Valkyries, but also because she sees Mimir's head hanging from Kratos hip, so she goes all out to kill the man who beheaded Mimir.
2:41 i love how atreus still try to cut bonds of the tree even if mimir told them this is impossible. also, i am imagining if mimir met the head of Helios.
Mimir: I have an answer to your every questions! Kratos: You ever hear the tragedy of the Greek pantheon? Mimir:......OK, there are a few gaps in my knowledge.
The cinematography in this game is so good, I never noticed just as Mimir mentions "the old magic" at 2:46, the camera pans to bring the red forest into frame, where Freya is.
“that could not be what she meant” is such an awesome line. The frustration from kratos at this part just shows how well this is written, constantly changing the story had me guessing where it was gonna go.
wouldn't be surprised if the Pandora's Box turns out also affected the gods outside of Greek pantheon or something similiar happened in the Norse pantheons, which mean Kratos has a good reason on putting them down on the sequel
Éfar Isti the Great War mini series implies he is Odin was so paranoid on ragnorok happening that he ordered Thor to commit genocide on the giants and later in the game Thor decided to nearly kill his son because he failed to kill kratos
