The original version of God Save the King was written in 1745 by an unknown composer and was titled "God Save the King". It was first performed publicly at the Drury Lane Theatre in London in September 1745, during the Jacobite rising of that year.
The 1745 version of the song consisted of just one verse, with the familiar tune that is still used today. The lyrics, which were meant to express loyalty to the reigning monarch, King George II, were simple and direct, with lines such as "Send him victorious, Happy and glorious, Long to reign over us: God save the King!" The song quickly became popular and was used in many official ceremonies and events, such as military parades and coronations. Over time, additional verses were added to the song, with new lyrics reflecting the changing political and social contexts of the time, such as the addition of a verse for Queen Victoria in the 19th century.
