I remember when the Tom lived in the white lady's house it was nice she was pleasant they lived in the suburbs. But when tom lived with the black lady, her house was messed up and dirty, she had on beat up socks and slippers and used to beat the hell out of Tom for every little thing.

i aint gonna lie as a black person it really broke my heart when i discovered Bugs Bunny (and whole bunch of other old cartoons) was originally a racist cartoon growing up i adored those cartoons. Fast forward when i was a kid i got on youtube for the first time and i saw Bugs Bunny acting like a slave and shit and finding all the old racist footage , that was the first time i felt truly hurt. I was sad, devastated even. I felt like I was less than white people and everything. That shit hurt me. Edit: If u internet niggas dont shut upI was a kid during this im straight now i was sharing how my 8 year old brain was introduced to racism.

It's not the cartoon characters that are considered racist. It's the creative behind the production.

When I was a kid Tom & Jerry and Bugs were part of our Sat mornings. When you're 7 & 8 back in the 70s, you didn't know what was that represented or what was going on. The way Tom would get abused and Bugs would get out of situations was funny as hell but yeah there were a few racist scenes in some of the episodes. The character of Speedy Gonzalez would not fly today either. Nor would the way they depicted Mexicans always sleeping and being lazy. They portrayed Native Americans in a derogatory way also. As did most of the western TV shows.

Early cartoon characters that had that Mickey Mouse-style look to them (like Felix the Cat, and Bimbo the Dog) WERE actually based off minstrel/blackface acting. From their look to their mischievous behavior. Vox did a dope video called "Why cartoon characters wear gloves" that explains it

Yeah I remember watching Tom and Jerry as a child, and seeing the mammy character and I’m only 33...same with Muppet Babies. Godfrey’s interviews are by far my favorite!!
