A new trend in 8000-meter climbing is how many you can get in one trip and how fast. Norweigan Kristin Harila is on track to smash long-time records this year. Thus far, she has eleven of the fourteen, all with climbing Sherpas, Pasdawa Sherpa, and Dawa Ongju Sherpa, of 8K Expeditions. I had the opportunity to record this interview with her during a short respite back home in Norway.
The current record is 189 days between April 23 and October 29, 2019, by Nirmal Purja Pun Magar and is recognized by Guinness World Records. However, a study posted online notes it took Nirmal five years, four months, and 25 days to complete all 14, primarily due to their conclusion that he didn't reach Manaslu's true summit during his 2019 campaign and only did in the autumn of 2021. Kristin's first summit of the project was Annapurna on April 28, 2022. She will need to finish by November 3, 2022, to get the speed record.
She is no stranger to mountaineering. In 2019, she became the fastest woman to climb Everest and Lhotse in a record 12 hours. The 36-year-old is from Vadso/Norway and is a former cross-country skier. Today, she claims her profession is as a mountaineer, runner, and skier.
Next up for the trio are Nepal's Manaslu true summit, before trying Cho Oyu and Shishapangma. She prefers climbing both from the Tibet side, but as we know, the Chinese have closed Tibet for climbing due to COVID since 2000. They will have to get an exception to enter the country for their attempt. She tells me she will attempt Cho from Nepal if she cannot enter Tibet.
Pemba Sherpa, the founder of 8K Expeditions, tells me:
I have never seen such a strong woman in mountaineering. If China gives them the chance to climb Shixapangma and Cho-Oyu, she will definitely complete the project in the expected time along with Pasdawa and Dawa Ongju.
This is a fun, fast-paced interview where we cover many topics, including:
- Kristin and her Sherpa team
- Her background growing up in Norway and as a professional skier
- Women climbing 8000-meter peaks
- Children
- The trash and experience epidemic on the 8000ers this year
- A brief rundown of her climbs thus far
- A look at what's ahead for the three
Best of luck to Kristin, Pasdawa, and 'Uncle Dawa.' She leaves next week for the final phase of the "Bremont 14 Peaks" project. You can follow Kristin on Instagram, Facebook, or her website and 8K Expeditions.
Climb On!
Alan

She is awesome.. I wish her all the best. It’s so nice of her talking so nice of her Sherpa colleagues… not many climbers talks about their Sherpas who helped them. I have so so much respect for women … my sister Pasang Lhamu was the first Nepali women climb Mt. Everest in 1993..unfortunately she passed away on the way down. She showed that women are also capable of doing same things as man does, which encouraged lots of Nepali young women, basically she opened the eyes of Nepal womens. Such a great interview keep interviewing. Thank you and Namaste 🙏

What a warrior ! Her story of her 'work' upbringing really rings true. My father was the same and I hated him for not giving me things my friends got. It was not until I was an adult I understood I can have whatever I want, you just have to earn it. ❤❤

Alan! Great interview again! I was going to go out on a limb and ask you if there's any possible way you could try and have Chris Bonington on? He is 88 now and probably won't be with us too much longer. I don't know if you have crossed paths with him at some point or if you know someone who could get in touch with him, but, as you know, he's a giant in mountaineering and I think many of your subscribers(as well as non-subscribers)would just be elated if you could have him on. I've seen videos of him that are 3-4yrs old, and he seems like he's still pretty sharp mentally! Anyhow, keep up your great work Alan!

This is not an attack on Kristen,but was struck by the comment that in Norway,leaving trash in nature is seen as criminal,yet the Norwegians need to come to terms with their responsibility of trashing the climate with their oil industry.

She's exceptional. What an outstanding accomplishment. All the detractors and liars screaming about the death of Hassan know nothing about what happened, what Harila actually did and how her team tried to save his life, when no one else would. Such a beautiful woman, an amazing athlete, a gracious and well spoken woman. BRAVA!!!

Not impressed. Sure, gifted athlete but not a technical mountaineer. Not really an equal team member by her own account. Doesn't make leadership decisions, doesn't fix rope, does she break trail ? She's still a client aided by money. As far as this new fascination with fastest time up all the 8000 meter peaks, we're really just getting started. I suspect we will see much faster times in the future.
@AlanArnetteClimbs

I can understand your viewpoint and invite you to put yourself in her shoes, regardless of the support, and ask if you would be impressed by your performance if you accomplished what she has? By the way, she never claimed to be a “technical mountaineer.”
@davepirtle9790
@davepirtle9790 Год назад
I can't agree with you. every single 8000 peak is hard to reach even with support. it seems to me some of the adventure may be gone on some of these 8000 meter peak because of fixed ropes etc. on the other hand it's much safer and accessible for people. a balance is always good but someone like messner his summits solo are unbelievable but he preferred climbing alone and only later got used to having a partner.

@@AlanArnetteClimbs and ultimately what is this achievement for? Put focus on female climbers? Greater awareness of what? What important cause is this achievement for, except her own self promotion? You guys have to stop this idiotic chase for virtual achievements, as this is PAID AND ASSISTED climbing. Nothing new in doing this whatsoever... Why even "take" the record from someone that actually had a semi good reason for doing this, by putting the limelight on Nepalese climbers and their capabilities in the climbing community. I mean, she could have as easily gone to the Olympic sports institute in Oslo, walked on their treadmill with 25 degree incline and wore the oxygen mask having less oxy uptake, simulating climbing these mountains... Have you heard about Eversting? And what is the next going to be? Do it in 4 months, 3, 2? Where does this stop? And at what cost, both monetary and in lives? I guess the next record braker have to kiss some Chinese ass, before going for the record. So you don't end up in her situation as well... I find these type of "exploration missions" a type of highly narcissistic western culture. It is not enough anymore to just enjoy nature with all it's marvels. No, no, lets run through it, or bike through it, climb every hill and mountain in the world, not taking the time to enjoy it at all. This is pure self exposure culture! Btw, I am Norwegian, and she is a dime of a dozen Norwegians running around doing idiotic "push my limits" crap... All in the name of me, me, and more me and me. Rich ass Norwegians with time to spare, and no sensible hobbies. Go do something ORIGINAL!!!

@@AlanArnetteClimbs On a personal level, I'm sure it was gratifying and a fun goal to knock these mountains off in record time. I don't have a problem with that. She doesn't seem to be grandstanding about it. At this point it's just high altitude peak bagging. It kind of reminds me of Via Ferrata, sure it's fun but where's the skill ? I guess it was inevitable that these peaks would become a commercial operation: wait for the good weather window, clip your ascender into the fixed rope, baby sitting Sherpas there to keep you out of trouble, snap a selfie at the summit. I wonder how long before someone helicopters to the base of all these peaks and sets a 'new record' One thing I find interesting is that the other two members, really the superstars, of the 'team' haven't got any press attention or perhaps they are happy to take the money and keep quiet.
