Khal Drogo is also based on Conan the Barbarian, who has a brief love interest with a woman named Valeria in Red Nails and they kill the last dragon on Earth, and that story and Tower of the Elephant are what the first Conan movie was based on. And in the movie there is a scene where Conan dies or is comatose and Valeria and a wizard resurrect him and they have to fight off dancing shadows, and this is where the Khal Drogo tent resurrection scene comes from. And Conan was a leader of the Cossack horselords (who have drooping mustaches) in The Devil in Iron. And in that story a woman of high nobility with rare blonde hair and blue eyes is captured into slavery and essentially given to Conan to in attempt to assassinate him. This is the story that the second Conan movie was based on. Edit to add that in the second movie they rewrote Octavio as Princess Jehnna, and she is about 14 years old, same age as Dany.

@@baab4229 Many authors do the same thing, they look through translation dictionaries to come up with ideas for characters and plots-- and most do not speak the languages they use. Of the authors that I have read Tolkien, Lovecraft, H.G. Wells, J.K. Rowling, Jules Verne, Frank Herbert, Sapkowski, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E Howard, Asimov, Gene Wolfe, Bram Stoker, they all did it. And if you browse translation dictionaries you find where ideas for certain characters came from. For example the idea of Davos being a smuggler with missing fingers, comes from Dwelly's Gaelic, the word for smuggler is mutaire, and is right above a word that means "stump of a finger" and "fingerless glove" and right above muth which means "changeable, decay, rot" which is where Lovecraft's Innsmouth comes from and Davos encounters fish people in the Bite and around the Mouth, where everything at White Harbor is merman-themed. (And Davos smuggles mothers, and his trip to White Harbor parallels Ashara's trip to White Harbor and she was a mother who was smuggled and locked up at the Wolf's Den) George uses Gaelic, Welsh, Norse, Anglo-Saxon, Hindi, Arabic, and a little French and German.

I think it makes some degree of sense that Viserys tells Dany about the braids because it illustrates how he sees the Dothraki, as warriors and nothing more. He doesn’t know about any other Dothraki wedding or gift giving customs or what it means to ride in a cart to them because he doesn’t consider it relevant to know, only how they fight. Not that it makes sense someone could only know that information and filter everything else out, but I think that’s what’s being implied here when contrasted with his later ignorance at least. 😅

I never noticed the hair motif. If Martin was setting up the idea that cut hair=defeat as a way to subvert it (which it definitely seems like he is with Denaerys and Arya losing their hair and rising more powerfully than before and Sansa having her hair concealed for a future unveiling), it might mean he was setting up a resurgence for Cersei. That might be worth keeping in mind for the famfic.

Maybe Illyrio was just trying to get rid of Dany and Viserys. Get Jorah to get Viserys killed and also now Dany is married to a barbarian who doesn't understand the concept of boats so that they both can't interfere with Aegon VI. I suppose that Illyrio assumed the dragon eggs were just pretty stones.

Magister comes from the latin word "magis" which means "major" or "greater than". In the context of teaching was meant to be taken as in the relationship between student and tracher where the student was the "minus"(lesser) and the teacher was the magis(greater), it could be used to refer to a greater citizen in Illyrio's case. Maegi is probably instead derived from the latin "magus" which isn't direcly related since it has eastern origins in its etimology and just means "wizard" or "magician" Mae

I think wearing bells in the hair is a real asian thing - a kanzashi. However, it is not to do with battle prowess. Bells in the hair on horseback reminds me of Santa. Santa is a Winter King or Holly King with pagan significance. Drogo is a Summer King/ Oak King, in that he dies at the end of Summer, bringing autumn. Perhaps that pagan symbolism / parallellism is more what George is going for, rather than some sort of critique or comparison to medals. Relatedly, the other bell head-gear wearer is Patchface, an undead antler-man with some sort of magical symbolism going on. - Also Jinglebell, another bellwearer, whom Catelyn was going to sacrifice (sacrifice of the Summer/Winter King) during the murder of King Robb, only to be murdered herself, via Weirwood Stigmata - and her last thought was cutting of her hair (Significance? IDK but female hair cutting does seem to be related to the death of their identity).

Not to oversimplify or be insufferably obvious, but Dany's character is all about possession...what it means to own a thing, what it means to be a thing that can be owned. I don't think Viserys pinching her nipple is an indication of desire...it's simply him reinforcing the notion that she is a thing he possesses to do with as he pleases. He may get a twitch from the power trip, but it's not about sexual desire for her. As her story progresses, Dany will have to reconcile being a bringer of "freedom" and forcing people to accept her as a ruler. And dragons...which, we've been told, are not slaves...

'This is ALL arranged marriages'. A little strong there? The key point to remember is that not all arranged marriages are nonconsensual. I interpret Viserys speech as showing us the darkest version of this diverse tradition. Much like how, say, Identity Changing is a theme - its explored in various ways - positive ways (Daenerys coming out the fire), ambiguous ways (Tyrion as Hugor Hill), magical ways (Bran) and the darkest ways (Theon).

@@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin Forced marriages are immoral and horrible. No ands ifs or buts. Arranged marriages and matchmaking aren't equivalent and have consent from both parties. Obviously, informal pressure exists and the difference in practice varies. Even in the middle ages forced marriages were considered not only immoral but actually invalid. Such marriages could be annulled by the church. Today arranged marriages are mostly done my south Asian immigrants. I doubt GRRM had what im about to say planned in the 90s, but knowing that “the bells” are what triggers Dany’s snap in the show and theyve been a motif to represent victory since her very first chapter, i think we can infer how its meant to play out in the books.
@umwha
@umwha 3 месяца назад
Heres my thought on why the female hair-cutting motif is here. Rapunzel. You see, rapunzel, like many fairytales, represents the Wheel of the Year. Rapunzel is thought to represent the summer solstice - the longest day where the sun stands still in the sky - this is rapunzels golden hair, as shes stuck in the tower. She lets down her hair as the sun lets down its rays. Rapunzel - a maiden in a tower who is stolen (a deeply ancient motif, related to Bride, Brigid, Persephone and more) has her hair cut, and shes thrown out of the tower. This represents the fact that after the Summer Solstice, the days grow shorter, as we enter the waning year. Therefore, the cutting of rapunzels hair is a sacrificial symbol that represents the turning point of the year - as the Winter Solstice is the opposing event. The Summer solstice is the brightest time of year, after which the year begins to fade. So, Dany, Arya, Cersei and Catelyn all getting haircuts in ASOIAF is symbolisng the End of the Great Year.

In ancient Rome, the word magistratus referred to elected officials of the state, with the Consuls as the highest Roman magistrates, The term was maintained mainly in the Holy Roman Empire, especially in city-states, where the term magistrate was also used as an abstract generic term denoting the highest office, regardless of the formal titles (e.g. Consul, Mayor, Doge)
@parastroika2393
@parastroika2393 6 дней назад
Magister is a Latin word meaning Master e.g. Magister Peditum/Equitum means "Master of Foot/Horse". In the modern world a Magistrate is an official who has the power to exercise authority on behalf of the State. Illyrio is probably some sort of civil official of Pentos, which explains his wealth and his familiarity with the Dothraki language & customs.

In English mythology a comet in the shape of a Red Dragon signaled the birth of King Arthur and his sister. King Arthur is born under the Red Comet, and the Dayne sigil is the Red Comet, so being born under the Dayne sigil is a way of saying being born under the Bleeding Star. The Dothraki call the Red Comet "Shierak Qiya" which literally means "Dawn" and to "redden" in Arabic-- the word śarqiyy (sounds like "sharqiya"). The Bleeding Star/the Red Comet is Dawn, and Dawn is the Red Sword of Heroes, Lightbringer. dan/dain means "song" in Gaelic, the song of ice and fire is about the two Dayne children born under the Bleeding Star, one of fire/Dany and one of ice/Jon. Dany to Arthur and Lyanna, and Jon to Ned and Ashara [ashar means "dawn" in Arabic] House with the Red Door = Manse with the Red Door = Mance Rayder. "Mance Rayder" is Dany's real father. Mance Rayder is an anagram of "dayne camerr", camhaoir means "Dawn" in Gaelic. danair means "Stranger, foreigner, guest, wanderer" in Gaelic Arth means "bear" in Welsh and Gaelic, and daoine means "man" and Dany is associated with bear men. (and so is Jon) Willem Darry is an exile who is a "bear of a man" and Jorah is an exile whose sigil is a bear, and he is as hairy as a bear. And several Gaelic words that sound like Darry (deoradh) mean "exile, banishment" as well as "stout" and giorra means "short" in Gaelic and uaillim means "to roar, to howl" So Dany is associated with bear men who are exiled and lost their birthright. And I think Ned allowed Arthur Dayne to take the black, where he became Mance [mancy means "black art"]. He is a man of song, a dain, he is a bear man in exile who lost his birthright. And King Arthur beyond the Wall unites all the peoples north of the Wall. And he took a baby Val(yrian) with him when he went to the Wall.

The "ringing of the bells" might be the trigger for her activation. Additionally, Queen Elizabeth I-- who would eventually cut her hair to become The "Virgin Queen." Devoted to her duty: without a husband-- alternated between being called The Lady Elizabeth and Princess Elizabeth, depending on her legitimacy at the time. Make of that what you will.
