Going solar in Arizona is its own unique animal. There are a few factors that make Arizona a bit tricky. If your system is not designed correctly, you may have a different post solar electric bill outcome than you were expecting. It is very important to have a local solar consultant that truly understands how the net metering agreement works with the utility in order to achieve what your goals and have the outcome you were expecting.
In this video we discuss multiple topics. Here are the time stamps.
0:00 - Intro
0:51 - Common installation errors/inverters
5:36 - Are premium panels worth the cost?
11:30 - Most common misunderstanding - The tax credit
19:13 - SRP and Tucson specific incentives
19:40 - What is the best energy offset?
22:41 - Southern vs Western vs Eastern panels
26:33 - Net Metering future
32:39 - Professional vs mediocre solar consultants
38:35 - Why do you want solar?

Hello Julian, from Ouray, Colorado! New subscriber! We just returned from a 2 week camping trip in Tucson to determine if we want to consider moving there. I think we reached a point we will move there, but it won't be until summer 2025. While there, we attended a few open houses so as to get a feeling for the various areas, but without committing to a real estate agent, at this point. There were a few houses that already had a solar set up (just about all of them were a leased arrangement 😞 So, we left Tucson knowing that we'd totally want to get a solar set up when we move there. I'd also be interested in some sort of power outage back up system (I guess that could be accomplished through batteries or a stand by generator). It was awesome to hear this guest speaking; specifically because he was in the Tucson market!! Awesome discussions! I did key in on your conversation with regards to a consultant or the solar company wanting your previous bills to determine power requirements at what time of day. Does that mean we shouldn't get a solar set up for 1 year so that we would have an AZ power consumption history? have a great day!

In my opinion, it does make sense to wait at least a few months to get a baseline of what your usage is and then from there we can estimate the rest of the months based upon your lifestyle in terms of when you’re using your AC and when you’re using your appliances most.

Im working in Solar in the Phoenix area. You mentioned building a system at a 150% offset. How/ why do you build such a huge offset under SRP who only pay around 2.5 cents per watt on their buyback? It doesn't pencil out to have all of that extra production only to send it back to the grid for basically nothing. What is your solution for homes under SRP?
@Superiorsolarconsulting

I would have to ask Theo but if the utility is only buying it back at 2.5 cents per kWh then a battery would be necessary

I do solar in Tucson/AZ and all over Texas, and one thing i’ve learned is NOT to go with the biggest system of the dollars don’t add up.

The goal is to ELIMINATE your utility bill for as long as possible. As long as your production outweighs your consumption that’s what you’re looking for. (Without overpaying for a system)

Ragarding bundling roof, hvac with solar. Your accountaint or tax professional will always tell you that it's tax fraud. Majority of solar installers will tell you its OK to bundle. Basically, Im told that since the governement does not control or limit how much the installer can charge you per watt then what's to prevent sebmitting a bill at $5-6 per watt as opposed to $2.50 that youre paying installer. How is this audited?

That inverter reliability problem goes double for using microinverters on our hot Arizona roofs. I have replaced lots of failed microinverters. Would you rather have a ultra reliable solar array that you don't have individual visibility of - or tie a much less reliable microinverter to your panels so you can see the failures better? Don't be fooled by Enphase's 25 year warranty - they know they don't last more than about ten years and then your installer will have to do the labor on replacing them one by one as they die. Heat is the enemy of electronics. Microinverters might be a good idea in other places but not in Arizona! And by the way, half of the Solar Edge inverter I installed years ago (not any more) have already failed... The three most important features of an inverter are:1) reliability, 2) reliability, 3) reliability.
@Superiorsolarconsulting
@Superiorsolarconsulting 9 месяцев назад
This is not true in my personal experience. I just don’t see microinverter failures often if it’s Enphase IQ series and still see tons of centralized inverter failures to this day. The IQ series have not been out 10 years and so if you’re referring to old M or S series Enphase inverters that are 10+ years old and dying it would make sense. I have thousands of IQ6-8 micros on roofs with less than 10 failures combined over 7 years.
@gregcollins3404
@gregcollins3404 9 месяцев назад
You haven't seen them fail yet. Just wait. That 25 year warranty is a joke in Arizona. The older series have had huge problems. Yes, they will replace the units for free (one by one) but you are the one on the hook for doing the replacement labor (one truck roll at a time)
@Superiorsolarconsulting
@Superiorsolarconsulting 9 месяцев назад
@@gregcollins3404the engineering for the IQ series is entirely different than the M series which didn’t need over 10 years to fail. They had a lot of issues right out of the box. If your prediction is correct, which is what it is, we still have about 4 years until we will see if you’re right since the IQ series has only been out for around 6 years.

@@Superiorsolarconsulting More power to you if they do last 25 years, but consumer electronics never lasts that long and the Emphase track record has already proven to be a disappointment. I have 50 years of experience in electronics and I'm not betting my company's future on getting buried by service calls in a few years.

@@gregcollins3404 your argument is very flawed. You don’t seem to understand that this will take many years to solidly answer, but the technology in the IQ’s do already show very good improvements. Yes there’s still a reason to be a skeptic but that applies to everything. What is actually guaranteed besides death? Nothing.

This guy is not an expert. You do not do 150% in SRP. Buy back less than 3 cents a kwh therefore ho getting ripped off. I recommend 70% offset than buy power from SRP at 3.68c a kwh opposed to buying it at 18-19c a kwh. The guy one billing people they getting 2 bills by doing 150%..
@theorosenberg
@theorosenberg 7 месяцев назад
Hi Chase, I'll step in, agree and clarify electric co-ops like Salt River Project have very unfavorable net billing/metering options for homeowners. The mentioned reccomendation of 150% offset is advised when the eventual growth of the homes energy use through kids, EVs and more eventual electronic appliances warrants such power. When designing in a major monopolized utility area, like APS or TEP, you have higher levels of energy purchasing power. I subscribe to the belief the mark of a great solar system is one that covers not only your current use but future use even if the battery system will come one or two years later. What's been your experience with SRP, Solar and Batteries?
@chasegentile7517

Yeah homes with a high demand i would do 1 battery that way they don’t go over the demand on their system. Objective for them is to buy as much power during the off peak and not go over during on peak other wise they get hit that demand charge. If their usage is minor with not much demand then load controller and only program it between 6-8pm when sun is going down. 150% doesn’t make since when they buying from us lets say 12c and buy back is 2.8c a kwh that means at night time they having to buy power at around 9c vs doing it the right way at 60-70 percent at 3.8c a kwh. Same goes for co-ops only difference is no demand charge. @@theorosenberg
