Most kids grow up on watching cartoons. Thanks to my parents, I grew up listening to Gold City, The Cathedrals, The Kingsmen, etc... I was just a young little boy during the early 90's, but I had the privilege of seeing these groups in concert. SGM was a huge part of my chidhood and it still is today. Thank you newtz2000 for posting these videos!
That and Eli Gold on Saturdays LOL! I have a joke with my dad.....I used to think there was a female in the quartets when I was younger 😂 sorry Brian Free!
Gold City are a group started in the eighties that rose to the heights of Southern Gospel. The premium line up consisted of Tim Riley - Bass, Ivan Parker - Lead, Mike Le Fevre - Baritone, and Brian Free - Tenor. They really set the standard, along with The Cathedrals, for many years.
Gold City is possibly my favorite gospel quartet. Doesn't matter to me the lineup, either. All the members here as well as all the ones currently in Gold City all show their passion for music and God, and I love how genuine they are in their worship.
I'm a firm believe that in many ways, the old ways are the best ways. It's like the hymn says. "My sin was old-fashioned, my guilt was old-fashioned, His Love was old-fashioned I know. And the way I was saved was the old-fashioned way through the Blood that makes whiter than snow."
They are all still singing today in their respective careers, check them out. Tim Riley is still traveling and singing with his group Gold City, Mike Lefevre has the LeFevre Quartet, Ivan Parker is a soloist, and my personal favorite Brian Free has his group Brian Free and Assurance.
I love to see and feel the power in the words of a hymn..........they can make you cry and rejoice at the same time. God knows what I need, and when I hear this, I put it on loop and play it until the words are buried deep in my soul.........and anchored in my heart.
Tim Riley never was a real, real, super-low Bass singer, but he didn't and doesn't have to be! You're definitely right! He has one of the best Bass singing voices in the world! Now into, I imagine, his early 70s, I'm guessing that he may have retired. But, until the day comes when he either takes his last breath, or Jesus comes back, don't ever count this guy out! Take a look at another Bass singer, Ray Dean Reese, of the Mighty Kingsmen Quartet! 80 years old, and, just like the Energizer Bunny...still going!!!
Ronald Shank - are you serious? He’s not a super low bass? You’re way off on that. He is super low and super clear. I get so tired of people praising JD Sumner who does nothing but growl. Tim sings low and you can fully understand every word.
I'd start with the Statesmen Quartet, Blackwood Brothers, original Prophets Quartet, Imperials Quartet, Stamps Quarter and these groups especially Statesmen Quarter set the standard for all quartets who have followed after them. Big Chief Wetherington with the Statesmen Quartet was known as the best bass singer in the world and no disrespect to Tim Riley or J.D. Sumner. Roy McNeil/McNeal was probably the best lead singer of his time and he sung with Prophets, Statesmen and Blackwood Brothers. Best tenor singer was Denver Crumpler with the Statesmen Quartet and Bill Baize with the Stamps who backed Elvis Presley and I'd have to add Brian Free. Later years Cathedral Quartet and Oakridge Boys.
He's a fine bass singer but Brian Free and Ivan Parker carry this quartet too. Ivan Parker is a fantastic lead singer and Brian has one of the best tenors out there.
@@wvob6752 they are all equally important to the sound. The baritone is the glue that holds it all together. If you doubt that, listen to the Statler Brothers and listen to Phil Balsley's baritone part. 4 part harmony is nothing without a great baritone singer.
I should also mention... that I took a group of kids on a trip last year, and played this album in the van, and the kids actually enjoyed, and could NOT believe that the album was 15 years old... that is PROOF that they were ahead of their time, when young Christian teenagers will listen to it 15 years later.... I can garuntee they would NOT listen to 95% of the stuff that was recorded that long ago... it sounds too 'old' for them. ;)
hi guys ,im back again ,i just cant seem to stay away from this video of these guys singing this song...uplifting is just not a big enough word to describe just how i feel when i listen to it ..it is awe inspiring music ...ive now watched this video about 50 times in the past week since i left my first comment ,i just felt i had to leave another ...thanx newtz2000...i cant say im converted yet but the road is straightening and the light is there in the distance..thanx again
I"m love the songs that Biney English writes, especially the song "I've Been Touched". I also have a VHS tape of this concert. Mine does't play as well as it use to, but it still plays.
What a great song and performance. I've got this exact same video on a very old VHS tape. Really good performances across the board. I do so love that song "We've Come to Worship" that Biney English wrote. Our pastor sang this very song this morning, and tonight I'm going to a local church to see the current version of Gold City.
I couldn't agree with you more, although Ivan and Brian are comparable in many respects as tenors. However, the comment I agree with you most is about Tim and his low, vibrating bass notes. My wife and I saw Gold City live in concert at a church in Victorville,CA and he hit a note so low that, as a bass, I was totally in awe of, and which vibrating the glass windows of the building. Unbelievable!!!
I agree. GCQ has always attracted amazing talent (Tim Riley, Ivan Parker, Mark Trammel, Brian Free, Jay Parrack, Jonathan Wilburn for example), but in my estimation, the Riley/Trammel/Wilburn/Parrack GCQ was the best. They are simply amazing, God-gifted talents.
Yes... for about 5 years running, they couldn't be touched... they were bascially an 'all-star' quartet..... from the late '80's until 1993(when Brian Free and Ivan Parker left) there was no one that could touch them. P.S. They were SO far ahead of their time, the 'new' Gold City, is still using some of the soundtracks from this particular album(Pillars of Faith) at some of their concerts TODAY! Amazing really...
In all the praise of the Brian, Ivan, Mike, and Tim lineup, I haven't noticed that anyone noticed that Mike isn't the baritone in this video. That is Steve Lacey, who is awesome. This video has to be around 1992-93, just before Brian and Ivan left, when Steve Lacey became lead singer when Trammell joined.
Oh I think Ivan is incredible. I'm talking about the energy of the concert. On that there is no comparison. Seen both and the band with Jonathan, Jay and Mark was incredible. Jonathan knows how to turn loose and have church and to me that makes a big difference. But I'll tell you, the album that this song came off of is one of the best I've ever heard, it's a classic.
Doesn't this make you want to please Him, Just as He pleased the Father? Doesn't this make you want to do His will, Just as He did the will of His Father? For it is God who works in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure. (Philippians 2:13) I love Him because He first loved me. (I John 4:19 personalized) And so I want to please Him.
"WOW" im not a bible basher ,but i do believe in somthing Greater than us.and the way to get the message across is through fantastic songs like this ...i am a lover of Southern Gospeland this group is fantastic ,can any1 tell me more about them ?
I grew up in the church.....I've fallen away, but still love gospel music. This is obviously Gold City. Late 80's into early 2000's Christian music had some great vocalists. The first and second tenors in gospel music will BLOW your mind!
God resurrected His Son. God His Father chose the place and hour and no He arose by the power of God the Father. Gabriel came down and rolled the stone away and said, "Thy Father calls Thee." Jesus told us He can do nothing of Himself.
ivan parker was a great and established member of gold city. if not for him they wouldnt be what they are or what become. i respect all the members that had have or will carry on the tradition
Gidday, the video is called "We've Come To Worship". It was released by Benson Music Group in '93. I'm not sure of the date it was recorded, but the venue was the Mt. Paran Church of God. The Tanya Goodman video I have posted is also from the same concert.
You can keep the message the same but have newer and more modern praise and worship and it works just great. I love this music but I also love modern praise like Lakewood and Michael W. Smith. His new one is live and it's fantastic.
this is my first time hearing this group...but i notice listening to the music and watching the videos..there has been different people singing...has the group changed?
It looks like he was feeling the music more. Gerald had his eyes closed and was moving his head with the rhythm of the music. I do the same thing. Plus, Gerald is pretty conservative. I've never seen him do a lot lot, even when he was with the Cathedrals.
He was, n still is, n will for ever be the Lamb of God once sin is irradicated from the universe. Only his scars will b the only memory of the rise n fall of sin.
That's the holy spirit talking to you. I would say to find a pastor close to you and talk to him about it. Search more videos for Gold City. Also the lead singer here, Ivan Parker, is a solo act. Search for him too.
whats wrong with me ,i keep coming back to listen to this song !!!!! im not a bible basher ,yes i belive in somthing but ive never been a church goer even during military service ,even when i went to war during the first gulf war ...theres just sumthing about this song and the guys singing it ...can sum1 please give me an explanation!!!!!
The song lyric said: "The son of the great I Am--referring to Jesus as the Son of God, or as the Son of the Father. That's incorrect theology, because Jesus IS the great I Am Himself--not the Son of such: John 8:58 Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Before Abraham was, *I am.* Joh 8:59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the middle of them, and so passed by.
@@newtz2000 Thanks my friend, I'm really into Bible theology and when I first heard that song lyric it just jumped right out at me. BTW, as a musician myself, were I to do that song, I would change the lyric to fit the Bible--if I knew who wrote the song I should contact that person with what I just posted. The Father, while God too like Jesus, is not the great I am according to Scripture. But retrospectively, it may be proper to also call the Father I am as well, but to say Jesus is only the Son of such is incorrect. All through the Old Testament, it was the Son of God who led Israel communicating with them in various ways. The Father only came physically down to earth at few and selected times. In the gross darkness covering Calvary the Father was there (from the spirit of prophecy) trying to comfort His Son--but Jesus hardly knew He was there, because the Father laid the sins of the world upon Him which is what killed the Lamb of God. Christ is also Michael the Archangel and the Angel of the Covenant in the Bible which some deny, but is easily provable.
Well, I see what you're saying, but I can't help but disagree with the presumption. Jesus actually was interested in the "old fashioned way." In a sense. He said "I come not to destroy the law, but to fulfill." We don't sacrifice goats, because the final sacrifice has come. That's not to say the old fashioned way was bad. Gal. 4:4 says He was made UNDER the law, the "old fashioned way." Yeah, he was interested, but he fulfilled it. But not all of "old ways" should be discarded.
+rebel7254 He is STILL the BEST, inside and out....This is an awesome song, and how you use it to also criticize...Well, you are wrong..I have been to many of his concerts, and he is as great now, as he was then! He is beloved by many, so don't criticize...He has the biggest heart, and love for the lord...And YES, he still can hit the high notes...
