According to the book Finding Gold in Colorado by Kevin Singel state parks like Castlewood Canyon and Chatfield operate on a sort of “honor system” where technically everything in the park, including the gold, is state property, but you can pan and keep flakes that you find. You are supposed to show any nuggets to a ranger.
