Wow, I'm surprised to see how shy Estelle was in real life. She was a hell of an actress because she played the feisty and outspoken Sophia to perfection!
Apparently she didn't have much confidence in her acting capabilities and always thought the public was crazy to believe she was a good actress and funny. Can you believe that?! She literally thought she would fail at any moment.
That is so totally wrong. I have to speak out. This was when she clearly had her dementia, and was very closed down. RU-vid estelle getty 1985, and you will se, she is really funny and smart.
Actually Estelle Getty suffered from terrible stage fright and anxiety when on stage. Despite her immense talent she had a terrible time going on stage.
Luna Rose she did but this was around the time her dementia started to kick in and you can see that look in her face. She started with it towards the latter stages of the Golden Girls as Betty and Rue have talked about it, and I have seen a few interviews where she was far more animated and chatty than this. A close relative has Parkinson’s related dementia and although for the most part she manages she gets a certain look when she is in a social setting and she clams up and talks uncertainly and I can see that there in Estelle. Sad but then none of us know what’s round the corner. Brilliant actress.
Luna Rose If she really suffered from stage fright, that actually means that not only she was super talented but also very brave; she overcame her fear every time and gave a hell of a performance. 👏👏👏👏👏
And when I watch the episodes of Golden Girls I'm blown away at how well Blanche's outfits were, and I actually learned that The McClanahan had it written into her contract that she got to keep everything she wore on the show. I love that, what a smart move
I love that they all do have unique traits and I am 23. All age groups miss these girls. Estelle was so serious and Betty made her giggle. alive in our hearts
All brilliant comedy actors. Must say thought I never laughed so much at Rue's brilliant acting as Blance.Truly wonderful with the deep southern accent she nailed the character to perfection.
@JhomasE; if you get the channel TV LAND from your television provider, every Sunday the Golden Girls are on from 6:00am until 5:00pm. Basically a TV marathon.
You could see Estelle's discomfort and anxiety there. She was nervous. Betty said she would freeze up before going on set sometimes. She was an accomplished stage actress but she felt she wasn't as good as the other 3.
well I'm sure considering this was Estelle's big break in television. I would be intimidated working with the other three accomplished actresses as well but Estelle def set her own place in television. :)
Estelle's anxiety was completely understandable and certainly now groundless but she most definitely held her own and even went a bit beyond the others at times. her delivery was priceless!
Unfortunately, while it may also have been nerves, by this time Estelle began suffering from the early signs of Lewy-Body's disease, a kind of dementia with Parkinson related symptoms. Her speech and movement slowed down considerably, her posture was stilted and slumped. This was in late 1992, by the time she became a regular on Empty Nest it was clearly noticeable though went undiagnosed until her death in 2003.
Mxyzptlksac I am that way I. social situations too. I am glad Betty hurried to take the lime light a bit. I think she knew a funny line would help her anxiety.
Jef Willemsen She didn't die until 2007, I believe. They certainly had diagnosed her at some point which is why she made no public appearances after 2000. You're right though, it was very noticeable.
For that last question, I'll admit, it's interesting, but she should have complimented all three ladies, not just Betty. Poor Estelle. You could tell she was suffering medically. I heard even during taping of GG, she had such a hard time remembering lines that she had to rely on cue cards, and even had to have them taped to different props, but she was incredible! All of the cast mates were very supportive of Estelle whenever she froze during tapings. I don't think Estelle was shy at all, just suffering medically. Anyways, they were all so awesome!
*castmate She's quiet in every group interview I've seen. The other castmates were always much more willing to talk about themselves and she gladly let them.

how estelle here makes one realize that an actor/actress can really be different in reality. that's why they are called actors/actresses, they only portray roles or characters and sometimes, if not most of the time, completely their opposite. when i first saw this clip i couldnt believe how shy and quiet estelle behaved compared to how she is on set coz of the character she had to play.
It’s like that with a lot of actors, most people don’t realize who you are on screen isn’t who you are in real life. Jaleel White wasn’t really a nerd, Bob Saget wasn’t a squeaky clean germaphobe, and Lisa Whelchel wasn’t a fashionista socialite.
I’d have liked to have met Estelle. I think she was so sweet. Would have liked to have met Bea as well. Bea intrigues me because people say such different things about her! Some say she was sweet and kind, while others say she was a real b1tch!!

It's fun for me to watch Mama's family and Golden Girls and notice the actor crossovers. Beyond Betty and Rue there was a slew of guest actors that appeared on both. I always imagined the shows had the same casting people lol.
I dont think she was shy, because it is believed that she suffered early stages of dementia. maybe she forgot the questions? out of all the girls on the show, she forgot the most lines. but the lines she did tell, I will always love her for it. love you girls!
Funny the host Vicki use to be on a show call Mama family. Betty and Rue was on Mama Family before Golden Girls. Betty played mama daughter and Mama unwed sister. Vicki and Betty where The Carol Burnett Show where Mama's Family originated from.
The idea of the Golden Palace was ridiculous. The creators should have just gotten the girls a new roommate. Remember Debbie Reynolds? The show could have lasted longer than just one season like Palace did.
Looks like Rues blouse is the same thing she wore when Rose told Dorothy and Blanche that she had 56 bfs before marrying her late husband Charlie. Love that scene.
She got screwed. She fought with producers, they tried to replace her but no one liked any of the guest hosts so they brought her back for a bit then just cancelled the show.
You can tell Estelle Getty has early dementia here since she's acting like she's never faced an audience before. She's supposed to be promoting a show, not testifying before Congress. That said, Golden Palace was savaged by the critics so I assumed it was awful. Finally saw it last year and, other than the ridiculous premise, found it was a great, funny show worthy of its predecessor.
I think a lot of people ,myself included, expectations that actress/actresses the like the character they are playing in real life. Estelle Getty is the complete opposite of Sohia LoL. She is a wonderful actress
I'd always heard Estelle Getty was kind of a shy person, and I can definitely see it in this interview. God rest her soul, she was a saint to HIV patients and the LGBT community as a whole.
On Mama's Family, Rue played Vicki Lawrence's sister. Betty White was her daughter. Inadvertently, it would seem the writers had Rue playing Betty's Aunt. But it worked, somehow!
@@TheEwing69 Still, in real life, rue was 12 years younger than Betty. what great actresses they were to be able to pull that off. And then to move to the Golden Girls with totally different characters where it always worked superbly.
@@ry.the.stunner wrong. Her dementia started on GG. There are episodes where you can SEE her reading cue cards to say her lines. People noticed something was off then. From 1985-1990, Estelle wasn't having trouble with lines. So clearly five years wasn't stage freight. It got worse in The Golden Palace and the Empty Nest. In 2000 was the official diagnosis and she got rapidly worse during the rest of her eight years remaining. It started in the 90's when she had issues remembering lines then ended with her forgetting who people were.
