The Golden Retriever fly came out of Virginia's Shenandoah Vally about 25 years ago. Since then, it has become very popular here in Maine for land-locked salmon, trout, and bass. Originally it was tied on a 3X long streamer hook. Today we will be tying it on a jig-style nymph hook.

Nice fly Trident. These flies sure do retrieve fish! I haven’t heard of them until I started fishing up in Maine for landlocked salmon but they’ll work anywhere. Thanks for the tutorial.

Do you need to use lead wire or is there a viable substitute?

@@Tridentflyfishing I did! I tied mine on a Partridge 'Ideal Jig' in size 8 since my target species here in central Texas are bass and the like. I used Danville Flat Waxed 210 in fluorescent red, keeping it flat for the most part. I also wrapped the (non) lead on the bare shank and slid it into the bead opening to jam the bead against the eye of the hook. The rest was pretty much like you tied it. A great quickie pattern. I think I'll tie up some "balanced" versions (without the lead wraps, but with the tungsten bead ( on a "stick") in front of the hook eye. Thanks for the demo!

what I like to do with my lead wire is ,at the end I'LL leave many a 1/16 and break it off there. With my anvil pliers flatten the tag end and wrap a taper with it works great.I noticed you don't flatten your thread by spinning it counter clockwise. Also the hook your using SURE DOES NOT look like a size 10 .More like a 12. I did 4 # 10'S and there a lot bigger than yours?????????
