Hi Paul, I have to confess I checked the release date on this video and I even went to the website to be sure it actually existed. So a company has a stamping machine that they use to press vinyl records, which, when fitted with a pair of stampers, is used to produce a finished vinyl record retailing for circa £30. One assumes they make a margin from this despite in all likelihood being paid a couple of £s per record by the artist. Some wag in their marketing department then decides to use blank stampers and virgin, un-coloured vinyl with no label and turn out a bunch of disk for sale at £48. Margin potential at least 95%. At least with acrylic mats, they can be bothered to make a mould with a recess to accommodate the record label. I’ll stick with the felt mat which comes with my deck thanks 😂.

Can't help thinking that using any old vinyl LP as a platter mat will probably give the same effects, maybe you could try one?
@TheAudiophileMan
@TheAudiophileMan 3 месяца назад
I would say no. Firstly, you still have the central label problem which affects wear and tracking. That hasn't changed and I won't be using this mat myself because of that issue alone. A vinyl record will duplicate those issues. Secondly grooved vinyl discs tend to retain nickel elements that's used when creating the master. There is no master contact in this mat because there's no music on it. Nickel transfer makes vinyl very weakly magnetic which is enough to affect (to an extent) the tiny, very sensitive magnets of a typical cart which does have an effect on sound, which adds high-frequency noise. I know, no one talks about this, most people who have disparage the idea but I've done dozens of tests and I'm convinced, put it that way. Next? The cross section of (most) vinyl discs is also a very shallow valley so will not provide complete support to the disc above, even if the central label thing is not a problem. I remember taking to Classic Records (a new defunct audiophile label) about this in the USA years ago and he experimented in producing perfectly flat pressings. I worked with him on that. It/s a thing. The grooves themselves are also dubious in terms of how they would react to vibration from above. And on and on :)

Hi Paul, The Goldmark mat is not unique. The German company ClearAudio, maker of turntables and accessories, also has a mat made of pure vinyl called the HARMONICER and sold by Analogue Seduction in the UK. It differs from the Goldmark in having a concave centre on the upper side which is also textured with micro bristles. The lower side is completely flat and the mat is made from black vinyl. So far I have seen positive comments about it's performance. Maybe someday you could test it.

My final thoughts about hi-fi. She is a lost love that you never had the pleasure of meeting. In the words of David Crosby, "she's got to be out there somewhere." And taking a cue from an old Traffic song, "I'm looking for a sound that has no face. She has no name, or number." Your reviews sit there like Detective leads, but the maddening search for perfection, or even, value for money, continues.

I was hoping you weren’t going to say it was better than the Strata-as I’ve just ordered one 🫣😅 I blame Dansette for this idea of playing vinyl upon vinyl!

Use it as a platter dampener. Put cling film on the bottom of it and then by the thin platter mat in this video. It's amazing how much the sound is changed with platter mats.... I use q-bert butter rugs and also I use vestax platter mats that are plastic covered...I'm a dj and huge audiophile and think they are the best sounding mats around.

It’s possible, but I can’t imagine that the designers would’ve not have realized the need for an indent in the center, so I give them the benefit doubt. It may be that they meant to design it this way. My first thought would’ve been to at least support the outer edge. Also, it did sound good to you. Maybe it’s the air under the platter. I think it deserves more than a 6 for sound
@TheAudiophileMan
@TheAudiophileMan 3 месяца назад
It's not getting 6 for sound, it gets 6 as an overall rating. And I've had a chat with the designer who is kindly looking to produce a Mk.II version. I look forward to seeing that. With a label indent. I am hopeful that the potentially good sound I heard will thus be improved. We will see.
@PaulG-sk8sj

Thanks for the benefit of doubt but to be fair to Paul in his review he is quite right, hands-up I didn't fully allow for the miniscule rise in the centre. I was over obsessive in trying to have as much vinyl as sensibly feasible to maximise dampening and resonance control whilst ensuring the optimum overall thickness and weight were achieved. Paul Rigby has been very encouraging with constructive comments and has made it crystal clear (pun intended) that it has huge potential so we are indeed currently investigating an improved "MK2" version.

Try cutting some newspaper that is bigger than the center protruding part so the mat can sits flush to the platter probably three sheets looks like??

The thing you didn't mention is the vinyl mat does nothing to damp the ringing of a metal platter which could be contributing to the difference in the sound, what you hear as extra detail could be ringing colouration. Original Live Upgrade Mat all day long for me.

If that's the case that the centre is raised, just like a record, why not just make the centre section to sit your records on? Would that work? I have put on my turntable eight of those small circular cupboard door bumpers, the type that you stick on kitchen cupboard doors so they don't bang when you close them. I'd be interested to see what you would make of this idea. I just got fed up of the felt mat on my Pro-Ject Debut sticking to my records due to static. I've tried more than 8, but this made a warped disc more pronounced!

@davidread4342 If I'm perfectly honest, with my cloth ears, I couldn't tell any difference in sound, BUT I've never done any sort of comparison listening. I just thought that as they are a product designed to "damp" a door from slamming shut, it would do a similar thing for a record as well as minimise contact of the record with the platter, on the (possibly deluded) notion that this would reduce any vibration, hum etc that the stylus may pick up from the surface. I'm not an "audiophile". I don't believe in all the crap about cables, power supplies, and the "snake oil" claims by companies. In all the 45 years I've been listening to records, I've never cleaned any. I store my collection properly and play them reasonably regularly. My system is all second hand, except my cd player, which was ex demo from my local hifi store. I'm also working on a turntable shelf, made of two pieces of MDF, separated by four small ball bearings, one in each corner. Now, this I started some years ago, but not finished as life and work get in the way, but I'm pretty certain that it won't make a jot of difference to the sound, but hopefully it'll look a bit stylish!

It's a novelty Paul. I have an acrylic mat that is flat. I cannot use it on my Rega has there is no VTA. I did use it on my other Turntable.
@jedi-mic
@jedi-mic 3 месяца назад
Well if the mat is lower than the original height then you can use pieces of newspaper underneath, newspaper is a good find adjuster for vta, and have some good properties for sound as well. The Rega Is adjustable but you need to put shims to bring it up to the height, Origin live make a screw version as well but is that better than shims?? Riega would say no, but onlyway is to find out try both. if you are handy I would make my own out of wood pinewood not a hardwood.

there are plenty of Rega arm spacers easily available. I'm using the cheaper Origin Live mat on my RP3 (plus their cartridge enabler) and it's ace.
