Good 12 Ga Slug-Wad Combos

Because of the ammo situation, reloading our own 12 gauge slugs is now more popular than ever. If the 12 ga slug and the wad are not compatible, accuracy is out the window. Here are some good combinations of slug and wad forming a good basis for load development.

The 12S3 wads I bought had vertical ribs, one on the inside of each petal. They really made the petals spread badly as a Lee 7/8 oz slug was inserted. I "filleted" those ribs out with a pair of scissors and it worked fine. It has eight petals now. I use them in my straight-walled hull slug rounds, and the DR Blue in my tapered Rem's and Win's.

wellerjohnjr-Thanks for the comment and the good word. Those STS hulls are among the best we can use. They take our commonly used wads readily. As usual, if we substitute wads, cut powder charge 10% and work up for safety. Use soft lead for slugs and cylinder bores and "we're in business" (Saving Private Ryan). You already know these things. Other readers may not. Best regards.

gun nut-the old AA hulls are the best. The new ones with the jammed in base wads are supposed to be as good, but I avoid them. I have about 500 Rem Gun Club hulls that are also one piece and I will use them before I have to turn to those new AAs. Yes, if that day comes, I'll have to rework loads for the new AAs - the loads should work, but accuracy to be determined... Thanks for your great comment.

olson gregory- depends on your use - for hunting 7/8 will give less penetration - if driven faster for same energy will slow down thru tissue faster. But for all other shooting, the 7/8 is better because 1) more velocity with same powder charge (see Ron Jeremy) 2) less recoil same powder charge 3) less lead needed to make 4) slightly better accuracy on average (see vid on these slugs Two Different Animals). I cast both and have used them 50-50 at the range. Thanks for question.
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 11 лет назад
gun nut - It's a taller column though so good crimping will depend on which slug you use and less powder charge. The STS Rem Premier has a little more capacity that the AA as well. But all three of the slugs do fit that wad. Good casting and loading to ya...

Troph2-reply2-so I save my factory for "serious" use. Note-all my smooth slug shooting has been done with iron sights. Took 30 years for me to finally break down and spend the $200 to get a rifled barrel. There's big joy in shooting that barrel with the tactical scope. That has led me to get the Lyman 525 slug mold. Still testing accuracy, but it is looking GOOD. Note the rifled barrel is not as versatile as smooth, but just change barrels. More testing to come in vids. Thanks for question

Testing shows that the Lee 1 oz and the Lyman pellet slugs have flight/accuracy issues, but the 7/8ths Lee does well.

Hello, thanks for all your information, and I agree a wad with a shot cup was not designed for a slug. The slugs I've seen have a solid wad under them that is too hard to embed itself in the bottom of the slug. I'm reloading some Super X, 2 3/4" -1 1/8 #4 hulls with the Lee 7/8 oz. slugs, have you ever tried the BPI 12 ga. Brush Wad 072BW12 between the powder and the Slug? It's a Cupless Wad that is 0.808 tall, (close to 13/16" tall) and can be loaded either up or down; no orientation is required, that looks to be the perfect height for a roll crimp to secure the slug. There's also a 12 Ga. Waxed Hard Card 21mm item number 21MMW12 that is also about the same thickness, and would probably work even better between the Powder and the Slug...

Fortunecookie45, are you using those wads in the Remmington Hulls? Was under the impression that Remmington hulls are tapered and require a different wad. I've got about 1000 of the remmington STS hulls myself, for buckshot loads. Thank for all vids you make, they really are great.

Thank you. I was thinking along the lines of a heavyweight shotshell, with 6 buckshot, and 1 slug or roundball. Or if that is unworkable, then perhaps only 3 buck, then a wad, and a slug on top?

Troph2-actually-been shooting and testing search for accurate smoothbore slugs for 35 years. The factories use propietary slugs and wads that we don't get. And it's very hard to beat factory accuracy and performance. We can get close but not there. So for serious use, I recommend shoot factory, for fun and practice-we blast away with out own slug loads. With rifled barrels, my take so far is that same thing-can't beat factory sabots in 12 or 20. We don't get those wads and sabot slugs...

the white claybuster wad thats 8 petaled is called lightning its 4100 i hold 7/8-1 1/8 oz ... the 4118 is the big brother to the lightning... 4118 is called windjammer it is a blue wad and hold 1 - 1 1/4 oz
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 10 лет назад
bruce don-That's a great test to see if the slug-wad will work-If you can't push it thru with a thick wood dowel, it will shoot through, but the wad petals will strip and accuracy will be inconsistent. I don't use the claybuster subs for the AA12 as the claybuster has an internal flange that the slug hangs up on - spreads the petals out if you force it in. The wads in this video don't do that...
@GunFunZS
@GunFunZS 11 лет назад
Federal 12SO is a perfect fit for Lee 1oz without a spacer. I use a paradox choke so "key bite" is theoretically beneficial. I just wanted to pass this on. The clay buster clone of this wad is tapered at the base of the cup and does not fit the slugs.
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 11 лет назад
afgesfgagsae-If we are using 10 BB size shot or 3 0 buck, the slug might cause a bit more dispersion of the BB or buck and that would be helpful. We can't put the BB or buck behind the slug if our slug is hollow based, the BBs or buck might get trapped in the hollow. But if a big round ball, then it probably wouldn't make any difference if the RB was behind or ahead of the BBs or buck. So much can be done with shotshell ammo - there are flechette rounds, etc. Best regards...
@afgesfgagsae
@afgesfgagsae 11 лет назад
Understood. Apparently if the slug leaves the muzzle last, it will always tend to disrupt the buckshot cloud as it pushes through the cloud; on the other hand, if the slug leaves the barrel first, it will "outpace" the buckshot, and not disrupt the cloud. It would seem desirable not to disrupt the shot cloud.

Great videos, my son and I inherited a lot of reloading gear. I'm new to reloading but looking to reload shot and slugs. I have a lot of unique powder and fig 8 wads with several thousand Remington gun club hulls, 75lbs of #6 shot. Do you know what slug will work and what powder measurement? Or a shot combination? Can I melt down the shot to cast slugs or is the lead in the shot to hard? Lol I have lots of questions
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 9 лет назад
Mark Bedworth Congratulations on the inheritance and the bounty of stuff. The figure 8 wads are great with those gun club hulls (those are the Remington Unibody one piece hulls - great hulls for reloading shot or slugs). The fig 8 wads may not be good for slugs as the compression zone is not tough enough. It would be a shame to melt down #6 shot - if you plan on hunting upland game or rabbits, squirrel with the shotgun, I'd save the shot as is for future use. You really do want pure lead or nearly pure lead for slugs (roofing flash, old lead water pipes, scuba weights, dental lead foil, old fishing sinkers = good sources of pure lead). Lead wheel weights and range scrap are best for making bullets. Linotype or SuperHard alloy for hardening lead alloys available from RotoMetals. Melted shot would be harder than we want for slugs. There are recipes for shooting slugs with Unique in some of my other videos. Problem is that every shotgun is a different creature - what shoots well in one gun may not shoot well in another. So when you are ready with your own cast slugs, you'll have to test for yourself - however, the slug/wad combos and powder charges that are workable will be a good place to start. A great wad to start with is the Winchester AA12 (not the Claybuster AA12 sub) or the Downrange AA12 substitute XL Blue or the Federal 12S3 or 12S0 (7/8 oz Lee slug wads. When you get your wads and slugs together, please contact me for the Unique load most appropriate. Lyman makes molds for two 12 gauge slug designs and Lee has the 1 oz and 7/8 oz slug molds.... Best to ya

Mark Bedworth Addendum reply - I have videos on those Gun Club hulls also. You might want to check out my playlist on Shotgun Slugs - lots there about slug/wad safety - push the combo through the barrel with a wooden dowel - if the combo pushes through your cylinder or IC barrel with some light resistance, you are in business. Best Regards

Aaron Morrison - Thanks for your comments and question. I have two great sources for shotshell data - the Lyman Shotshell Handbook and the BPI manuals. Theoutdoorsguy1-Thanks for your question - No recipes are good unless you start low and work up for safety in your gun. My gun handles Lyman 525 slug, W114 wad (or AA12), 18-23 grains Unique, old AA hull very well. For Lee 1 oz or 7/8 oz, 19-25 grains of Unique, Fed 12S3 wad, old AA hull. With Lee slugs, I have used heavier powder charges safe in my gun, but others have said too heavy. There is not much data on Unique with Lee slugs. I would not use Red Dot with slugs-pressure curve too steep
@rooster3019
@rooster3019 7 лет назад
FC; probably THE BEST wad for slug accuracy is a build-up combination of modern plastic gas seal, nitro cards, and a top nitro card. Then again, our popular mold choices are mostly for slugs that need a plastic shotcup. I wonder if you have yet to get a shot cup loaded slug to perform as well as a commercial Foster type rifled slug load (Winchester 1oz in 2 3/4" are my comparative from smooth bore 870 with 26" skeet #1 barrel). That is a pretty lofty standard as that load is amazingly accurate. Also, how 'ntarnation does one get these posts to go to an "inbox"?
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 7 лет назад
Rooster - When comments come in, they are supposed to go into the inbox automatically by Google, but something happens to some of them for unexplained reasons. We need those slugs like the factories use - the Winchester Fosters have an enlarged skirt that compresses on the bore, that the rest of the slug rides the barrel = works great with the nitro wads, over powder obturator wads. The closest thing we have are the Lyman Fosters, but they don't fit the barrel as well as factory Fosters. Good shootin' to ya, FC

I got lucky and resupplied with Unique which I use in 45Colt, 44mag and 30-30 cast as well as 38/357. I will be loading 690 ball in 12ga again and have been using Rio primed new cases which use an inverted fold crimp. that's with an lb12 wad. I'd like to use a wad for a snug - not tight- fit out of all my riot guns. You mentioned Downrange blue as good for all slugs. can a 690 ball in this wad pass through a cyl bore with finger pressure? Thanks. 60's cast hard, not concerned with anything but fun plinking.
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 7 лет назад
average joe - That is indeed what you want - but if a wooden dowel on the floor with the shotgun barrel put over it - used to push the slug/wad through - if you can push it through without severe pressure, the combo will shoot through the barrel without shearing the petal (s) off and losing accuracy. The 690 ball is actually a hair on the big side...our wad petals tend to be .015" thick (x2 = .030) if thicker, will be tight in the cylinder bore 12. But I don't know your barrel. If you need thinner wad petals, the Lightning and Windjammer wads are thinner. Best to ya, FC

@Soulman-lb3gg
@Soulman-lb3gg 5 лет назад
If you load a Lee 7/8oz slug in a Winchester 12SL gray wad, in a Winchester AA gray hull, with a nitro card underneath, and the crimp looks good and everything fits snug when you load it, but then the next day the crimps are bulged out, what's the problem? Do things inside the shell expand after loading? The same load inside a new Cheddite hull didn't bulge, which puzzles me. Should I ditch the nitro card under the slug in the wad?
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 5 лет назад
Soulman1282 - Yes, this is a common problem...cause is the column height of the payload was just a hair too great. The crimp closed, but compression of the powder and/or the wads occurred that the crimp was able to still close. But just a bit of time and the compressed contents opened up the crimp...you have to reduce the column height. Removing the nitro card wad under the slug can certainly help that, but the purpose of that was to prevent the wad from nestling into the base of the slug - you will lose that. That gray hull has a tall compression zone, you might want to switch to the regular AA12 wad while still using the nitro card under the slug. Another solution would be to switch to a slightly taller hull or to a hull that has a bit more internal volumn (shorter base wad like your Cheddites). Reducing the powder charge will also get you a stable crimp, but you might want the extra power. Easy answer is to stay with the Cheddite hulls (available at BPI). Good shootin' to ya, FC Steve

@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 11 лет назад
afgesfgagsae-If you are going to do this, you are on your own-I can't find any buck and ball loads in any of my manuals to even begin load development. If you are going to do this, the convention is the slug or big ball goes into the shell first, then the smaller buckshot and then either roll crimp or fold crimp. Be sure to weigh the whole payload and do not exceed 1 1/4 oz in the beginning. Personally,can't see any need for these, we're not shooting at enemy army at 50 yards with smoothbores.
@showproja

While slugs are more accurate, they are quite a bit more difficult to make than .69 cal ball. I love woods-walking and plinking with a Shockwave loaded with a roundball ammo.
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 11 лет назад
afgesfgagsae-The buck and ball loads increased the hit probability on enemy troops back when ranks of soldiers stood up and fired volleys of smoothbore muskets at each other - madness, but they didn't know any better. Guns were inaccurate, but more projectiles=more hits. George Washington was a big fan of buck and ball. And even with rifled muskets of Civil War, buck and ball did PLENTY of damage and maiming. I'll see what I can do about a vid as there is interest there. Thanks...

If any changes have occurred since then, I am not aware of it. Easy to just mike the wads for thickness. Steven Schultz - I like that .690 round ball...Sometimes I wished that it was a 685 round ball though because it would fit more of the wads without bulging the cases. @FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 11 лет назад
Troph2-Over 30 years of shooting slugs in smoothbore barrels, my conclusions are that factory loaded slugs have the highest degree of power, consistency and accuracy compared to our reloads (for instance, from prone in field - shot 2" group with iron sights 3 shots 100 yards Win 1 oz Fosters) bar none. Factory slugs-proprietary components. But my reloads are accurate enough at 50 (4" goups rest) for offhand fun at range and beat the pants off factory in economy (cost 10% of factory) reply1

what is the comparison between the downrange blue wad and the waa12r wad thanks
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 8 лет назад
+ocean374 -- The downrange blue wad is a substitute for the Winchester AA12 wad designed for 1 1/8 oz shot charges. But the DR - XL wad fits our slugs nicely, unlike Claybusters that have a ridge inside the petals that causes the petals to bulge out when slugs are placed. However, the AA12 wad shoots better for me with slugs than the DR blue...Problem is that the Win AA12 wads have been in very short supply - as scarce as Unique powder... Best Regards to ya, FC

My question is this. Is there a wad that can be used for both a 1 Oz slug and 1 Oz of shot.?
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 7 лет назад
Thomas Strawser - Absolutely, in fact, all these wads were originally designed to be used for shot. The 1 oz shot wads do fit 1 oz slugs although sometimes the 7/8 oz slug fits the 1 oz wads better. The fact that these wads were never designed to be used for slugs is one of the reasons it is so difficult to get consistent accuracy across the board with these systems...factory slugs use wads that are designed from ground zero to be mated with their appropriate slugs for accuracy and performance. And, unlike metallic ammo, they don't sell the slugs or those wads to reloaders. We're left with jerryrig systems. Exception is the BPI slug / wads which are near factory and priced accordingly - but the factories don't use BPI slug / wads. Have a great day, FC

what combo is the most accurate?

iwantosavemoney - Saving money is why we make these slugs - our reload slugs cost around 15 cents a round compared to $1.50 for factory slugs = 1/10th the cost. As for accuracy, that depends a lot on a particular barrel...If you have a shotgun barrel that shoots any of our slug/wad combos well (2" at 50 yards), never ever sell that barrel. My barrels only shoot into 4-5" at 50 yards - fine for hunting but only out to 50. Happy Holidays to ya, FC Steve

FortuneCookie45LC yeah i started looking into reloading after buying a few slugs i like shooting them but not paying for them. i wanted to buy a bulk buy and have a small stock pile of them but it was not cost effective on the bouble 00 or the slugs so needless to say i have not started my stock pile of shot gun shells yet but am learning how i can get it done i think i secured a 55 gallon barrel of lead shot for a a couple of hundred dollars i was pretty pumped about that but i dont know what it weighs but I may have to unload it to get it home. lol

iwantosavemoney - Pure lead is the recommendation for our cast slugs. Lead shot has 3-4% antimony (it's called antimonial lead) and BHN around 11-12 perfect for standard velocity target and CAS bullets - not for slugs. However, some casters do use it against the recommendations - If you do cast with antimonial lead, at least be sure to only shoot them through cylinder bores. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, FC Steve
