Man he must be reading all of our minds because I was looking for one of these too 😅But more specifically I was trying to find a video on Dehen 1920 literally all of yesterday and then he posts this one
I think this series is going to be a big hit Carl. You've always done a great job by providing more budget friendly options for those who don't have the means. Can't wait to see what other videos you come up with.
This is not everyone's cuppa tea but I've scored several higher end wool, cashmere, and alpaca sweaters for me and my wife at the thrift for less than $10. A quality wool shaver will make it look just like new. If you do decide the thrift route, grab the sweater and bring it to the light. Wool and cashmere are notorious for holes.
Finally! A rugged man fashion guide! I often dabble in high fashion, but femininity has overtaken the mens fashion scene.. so to see actual ‘mens’ ‘minimalist’ fashion popular, is a great thing to see! The ‘Real man’ will never go out of style! 👏 Thanks bud
Wonderful Carl. When it comes to cardies ( a us British affectionately call them) I would rather save for a year and get the very best one. It will last a lifetime, age beautifully and become a true companion! I wonder, could you do a video on the best ways to care for fine wool garments? I was always taught that washing is something to be done very rarely and then by hand in cool water with old fashioned soap flakes and the allowed to dry flat on a clothes horse outside on a warm breezy cloudy day so that it does not shrink. But normally to freshen it’s just best to hang it on a washing line on a similar day and the wool will freshen up with no need for washing. I do this and it does work but I would be interested in any other ways. Thanks Carl, keep up the good work!
I think my phone is listening to me as today I was searching talking to myself saying ‘ where is my feckin big cardigan, why is it still so cold, spring my arse’ so first thing on RU-vid 😆
What a great idea, I like the idea of this ‘good, better, best’. Also very dangerous…. You made me want a cardigan sweater… Well I go shop for one and have a good one y’all!
Thanks man! I’ve been dragging my feet on that review because I found a company who use the same waxed canvas and similar build quality for a few hundred less. I’m waiting for that jacket to come in so I can compare them and offer an alternative.
Thanks for making this, I’ve been looking for the right cardigan for a while and you did the hard work for me. Wearing the ll bean one as I type this and couldn’t be happier. Please do a shirt-jacket or shaket video next! Need one of those too😉
Great video Carl. Thanks for introducing me to the Dehen sweater. I got my shawl 2.0 coat a couple days ago and love it! It's one of my favourite pieces of clothing, if not my favoruite :) It look dresssy, its extremely well made and it will be indisposilble come fall/winter/spring here in Canada.
Just picked up a recycled plastic bottles & oyster shell “Fisherman’s Sea Wool” cardigan from Huckberry ❗️ Warm, comfortable & good looking for a reasonable price❗️Enjoying all your informative videos! Happy 2023😎
I just purchased a Roundtree & Yorke from Dillard's in Denton, TX. It's very similar to the LL Bean you reviewed. It has a lot of the features you mentioned and I love it!
I've got two of the LL Bean Cardigans, super comfortable and high quality. I added suede eldow patches myself as a preemptive protection. They're made of Lambs wool so less itchy that regular sheeps wool.
I bought a lovely William Lockie wool shawl cardigan when I was living in Seoul... 2 months later I got relocated back to Texas. Needless to say, it's been in a drawer most of the time with this weather.
Great video Carl! That Dehen 1920 is a beautiful sweater. Amazing that this video showed up at this time. Just last week I dug out an original Banana Republic Rag Wool Cable Knit Cardigan with suede leather elbow patches and woven leather buttons. I bought it in 1980 when BR was first getting started. Catalog was artist's drawings and ordering was by mail only. Unfortunately, it seems wool shrinks when left unworn and in a dresser as I can no longer button the buttons. That LL Bean sweater looks like a pretty good replacement.
Try cold soaking that old wool cardigan with a wool specific detergent, something that will add back lanolin to the wool. I have used the laundress shampoo, but maybe another option out there. The wool likely dried out and shrunk depending on how it was stored.
@@CarlMurawski it's this season's Winston jacket. Looks even better in person. I actually picked it up at Franklin & Poe in Philly after your interview with Albert, so I owe you both a debt of gratitude!
@Carl Murawski big fan of pretty much everything I have from them. Suits, coats, sweaters, shirts, even their dress shoes are solid. Definitely one of the best in the high value menswear scene and everything punches well above its weight class IMO
Great video per usual Carl. IMO save your money and own 1 Dehen. I’m a sweater junky (used to think Dale of Norway was it) until I purchased a Dehen sweater coat, now I have to force my other sweaters into rotation. Nice shout out to a sleeping giant.
The dehen is really beautiful. Also, if you like preppy style more than heritage I'd recommend William lockie/o'connells. They both make beautiful thick lambswool/cashmere cardigans
Not quite a cardigan, but Canadian brand Rue Saint Patrick makes some absolutely killer worsted wool crew necks in Ireland! Great midrange price as well
This was great! I have 2 llbean sweaters, and a j crew one. I love them! A Dehen or a North Sea Clothing sweater would be awesome some day! ll bean also has some Scottish made sweaters sometimes. It was a little more than the ragwool but is nice too Do you smoke pipes with your sweaters? I always feel in the mood with one, but don’t want a stinky sweater haha
If you have an expert knitter in your life (and you've proven to them you will wear it and take good care of it) they will probably be overjoyed to hand-knit you a custom fit cardigan in the softest 100% wool or cashmerino yarn they can find. It won't be cheap, the good yarn can be $20 - $30 per skein and sweaters can take more than 6 skeins.
Cardigans aren’t my style personally but I definitely see why you agree with how it’s versatile and looks great paired casually and dressed up and I like how you bring up both affordable to amazing quality ones Also maybe could you check out the punisher season 1 ep 1 and maybe analyze it, especially the construction job that Frank takes and how accidents could happen like how it did to one of the workers, and how Frank’s wardrobe for a real construction workers prospective really work on the job especially his magnum boots and what else he could’ve worn that blended well with the job, also analyze the other workers especially lance and his friends attitudes towards Frank and how their all bark and no bite
Most definitely man, that’s a great idea. Killer series too, though I’ve never seen anyone take down a wall with a sledge hammer by themselves on the job. It served the story well though!
Excellent video on cardigan sweaters at different price points. I'd like your opinion on the Dri-Duck brand of jackets and coats. They seem to be a inexpensive option to brands like Carhartt.
That's hilarious you mention the better half "borrowing" sweatshirts and sweaters. I made it a point to get my wife several hoodies and sweaters exactly like mine for Christmas but she claims mine are softer and warmer 😆. This video is a great selection for home and going out. I own a few from Duluth Trading and they are exceptionally warm and great looking. I usually reserve them for home if I know I'm settled in for the day or church or a casual going out for dinner.
very interesting and undoubtably good quality but: 6 buttons vs the typical 5; its cut is more coat like and less sweater like; and made with worsted wool which is typically used for suits and not sweaters (most of my suits are worsted) which is why the look of the "sweater" is quite a fine weave. For a sweater not my cup of tea despite my fondness of cardigans. Look to William Lockie, north sea, blacksheep, andsons or inverallan for more typical fare. but as I stated, the quality looks fine indeed. nice choice Carl.
Any opinion on Filson's cardigan? Seems robust and I love the brown color, 295 on sale with their lifetime guarantee. Wool looks pretty course/scour prone? I do live in drafty house and piddle in a cold shop, so I am looking for something that will split those duties and still serve me well cooking, smoking meat and frying turkeys while watching college games on Saturday. Leaning towards a Dehen Shall Sweater coat that they can bury me in. Looks tough and versatile (layering and ease of handwashing/cleaning)? I know its bend-over expensive, but I've been a Filson customer for ~30 years - I am use to that.
3 ideas for you... Good better best t-shirts, good better best jeans, and good better best sneakers. Also good better best carry-on bags and good better best can openers.
Carl, did the dehen cardigan collar feel itchy on the neck? It's such a big collar it had me worried. Or does the knitting style make it less itchy and more comfortable? Thanks!
That moment when Carl says it is a once in a lifetime purchase.....that's when I know I have to have the item! I really do like the good better best format as a guide to more affordable items that still meet Carl's standards of quality and are hopefully USA made as well.
its fitted, id go large, plus its wool so it will stretch. If you plan on wearing thickers shirts go XL. I was on upper end of M and it fits great with a t shirt.
@@countvantran Thank you! I recently found a new-old stock Best Made Co. by Dehen in large. It is the same cardigan, but Dehen used different buttons and red wool in the interiors of the pockets for the Best Made label. It is an excellent cardigan and large was the right way to go.
I think the best cardigan money can buy is either a cardigan from Brunello Cucinelli or Loro Piana. I am hoping someday I buy myself a sweater from Loro Piana tbh
Interestingly enough, the mill tour I mention at the end of this video used to be a Loro Piana mill! Then they sold it (and all the equipment) to American Woolen. In fact, a lot of the same employees work there too.
Wool is warmer than cotton... That's why I don't like sweaters! I like the look, but... I'm that guy in leather thongs(flip-flops) eating a blizzard in a blizzard. I'll stick to my unbuttoned flannel with buttoned up sleeves for weather over 45F. The cardigan might be comfy for those below 0F winters, but Tokyo doesn't see those. Maybe if I can ever convince my wife to move to Maine/Alaska /Montana/Hokkaido...
I'm sure the quality of the Dehen is good. However, it just looks...lifeless to me. Something that's too informal to look snazzy. But too formal to look casual.
