The thing I like about the Margate shot is the dog that is up next, the way he is almost leaning backwards cracks me up.

I agree with your last point, i.e. not every photo needs to tell a story. However, I don't think great photos need to make you asks questions. It's all very subjective. Not really sure what a great photo is to be honest. So many acclaimed images from the old master, Meyerowitz and co., look like random snapshots to me. For me, the best photo of the ones you show in the widow is the pigeon taking flight. 🤷

I agree that the pigeon image was my favourite. The patches on the wall below the pigeon also looked like an abstract of another bird. I thought that was the reason why you took the photo.

Solid comments, solid arguments. Excellent video. IMO you didn't give the photo of the sunbathing woman the credits it deserves cause the DoF is great, the blue of the chair and sky are nice in contrast with the red on her toe nails. The jewellery (rings) on her fingers give a nice break to the symmetry of the fingers. adding that to the feelings it will arouse an overall a great shot. And I thank you for sharing

Not sure if I would distinguish like this between good and great photos but I like it indeed when a photo makes me ask questions. I don’t think, however, that a single photo can really tell a story.

The good vs great definition is a funny one. I've had people really react to images of mine that I personally wasn't very impressed with. Likewise I'll feel I've got a real banger on my hands and not had much reaction at all (IRL not social). It's subjective and difficult to apply a metric to. I've also very rarely successfully planned and executed a great shot so you're kinda pissing in the wind trying to define one. I do like that "a great photo should be a cliffhanger" thought though...

You should never rely on non photographers to get opinions about photos
@MrLucas69lyon
@MrLucas69lyon 4 месяца назад
@@Pspet At the end of the day, the photos are to be shown to a wide audience, including (and especially) non photographers. So non- photographers' opinions/reactions matter a lot.
@thomashill5768
@thomashill5768 4 месяца назад
@@Pspet I'm just a hobbyist and definitely value the opinion of other photographers but I'm not sure professionals are that bothered and are quite likely solely concerned with the opinions of non-photographers. You could even make quite a strong argument that there is more value in the instinctive, raw reaction of an untrained eye...

Thank you Roman, this was a great topic. Although I enjoy many YT channels, I really only listen to you and Eren on ideas to improve my photo game. As I am now in my second year taking photos, I am trying to improve my composition. I am shooting in monochrome, so I can only see in B&W through the viewfinder. This is actually much harder, but I am paying more attention to light, tone and shapes. As far as "good vs great" images go, I only ever shoot to please myself. If other people like my images - fantastic and thank you! Each year, I will make a book of my favourite images of that year, two from each month. I try to see if I can notice any improvement in my photography over that 12 month period. I always value your videos thank you and keep rocking on. Cheers, Peter.

I think I might have to disagree for a very simple reason. just because I did not ask questions in the first part of the video doesn't take away anything from the photos, some of them were great and vice versa, I did have questions but did not necessarily think of the photos as great or interesting. I preferred more photos from the "good" section, that is not to say "don't put a story in your photos" but questions alone don't make a photo great, the visual is just as important. thanks for the video!

EXCELLENT!!! about time someone address this issue of boring yettech good street imsges as the social media reinforces the boring technique. inly thing I would add is touching on the power lines or structures in telling the story. again I love it !

The dog throwing photo evokes the famous 1995 Patagonia catalog photo by Greg Epperson where a rock climber is throwing a baby for her husband to catch. Definitely look it up if you aren't familiar with it.

Bel video ciao .

I think the distinction I would make is: you showed technically great good photos, then you showed technically good great photos. So they were all great and good but in different ways.

Great points made in this video, however I wouldn't exactly categorize the distinction you made between the two type of images "good" and "great". They are simply different, one is esthetically pleasing to look at the other tells a story. I personally prefer the first type, when the image is pleasing to the eye in a balanced harmony. The story telling type photos are just too messy for me to look at most of the time. I prefer when art evokes peace in me not unrest.

Obviously "greatness" of photo is pretty subjective as any story - emotional triggers are pretty different for different people (for instance - I personally saw no greatness in photo with sheep, but photo from metro or with pigeon seems excellent for me). The question is - should be "story" behind any great photo or not? Throwing dogs photo creates emotion for You and Your friends, because You where there and photo rises memories, but are much less emotional for people, who was not participants of that event... In same time - some of pictures You called "good", for me seems great, because story behind them are universal..... Ufff...complicated....like any discussion about art :D
