I found Mel to have unhealthy boundaries, inappropriate conversations with a SA, and an obsession with a “dream bag” which she did own at one point in time. Unfortunately I don’t think she sees it.

I’m not one who usually comments, but I have to say that your analysis is on point!!! I’ve watched Mel’s video, plus other people’s reaction videos, and it’s like they all missed the point that she crossed boundaries and made it uncomfortable to work with her. Yes, she received a lot of uncalled for and nasty comments on that video, which is completely wrong; however, she also received a lot of fair and constructive critiques, and her responses to them showed that she wasn’t receptive at all and in willing to see things beyond her own (very narrow) point of view or do any introspection. I do feel for her in that she feels so mistreated by the brand (and the whole thing with HR calling her was a HORRIBLE move by the corporation), but in the end, she tried to play a game with Hermès, and she lost. Edited to add: I think that her reselling practices were what came back to bite her in the butt. She resold multiple bags that were super hard to acquire, and each time she asked her SA for one, she always referred to it is as her “dream bag.” But was it really a “dream bag” if she was willing to sell it just a few months after buying it? Idk, this could just me being judgmental. But I can see how this could be frustrating for the SA to see her turn around and sell something that the SA may have had to put in extra effort into securing for her. Also, Mel was reselling things like Hermès packaging, makeup samples, and counterfeit twillies online, which the brand might take more issue with than just reselling bags alone (counterfeiters could feasibly purchase the real Hermès boxes from her to make whatever fake products they’re selling look more legitimate). But I don’t think Mel was reselling her purchases as a legitimate form of income; rather, she was trying to offset the costs of what had turned into an extremely costly “hobby.” I think she got caught up in the chase and was more interested in “scoring” (ugh, I hate that term) an “it-bag” rather than buying what she really liked. I think that this is a sad cautionary tale about how pernicious the luxury world has become thanks to advertising, social media, and “influencers” (hell, even as an early teen I was OBSESSED with getting a Murakami LV bag after seeing Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan carry them in the early 2000’s-so glad my parents never agreed to that one); nowadays, people feel the need to continuously acquire and overspend to “keep up” with everyone else, and sadly, not all of us can keep up, and it becomes an unhealthy preoccupation that only breeds feelings of inadequacy. I’ll admit that sometimes I have to check myself and take account of what I already have and fight those urges to buy more. We’re never satisfied: buying more just leads to wanting more. Thank you for providing such a balanced critical take on this situation. You did a good job of keeping all parties accountable.

@oliviaw3704
@oliviaw3704 3 года назад
@sandra Mathieu Yes, that’s exactly what it was! I feel like she realized that she couldn’t get the bags she wanted through buying alone because she couldn’t spend like a VIP, so she resorted to emotional blackmail as a desperate last-ditch attempt to get a bag. And LOL, the Hermès game isn’t just insane; it makes people insane, too! The whole system is becoming unsustainable for both Hermès customers and buyers on the second-hand market (reseller prices are outrageous in the USA).

. . . Glad to see I'm not alone after reviewing the majority of the comments on this video. ---->>>> There are more important, significant things in life than "dream bags", "wishlists" and "appointments." Now yes; I understand up to a certain point how disheartening and upsetting it can be to discontinue business with anyone who you've frequented for years. I know - because I've had same (or similar) experiences. (Not with a luxury brand but with nail salons, stores, etc; who had my patronage for quite a while.) . . . But I digress. As a young mother of two and fairly newly married, her main priorities should be the health and well-being of her family; not some stupid purse. All of that money that she's spent on Hermes bags and accessories should've been set aside in a trust fund or college fund for her CHILDREN. The word is FRIVOLITY. **NOTE: Also, I find it rather inappropriate that she felt the need to constantly discuss her "morning sickness" and "how far along she was pregnant" with her sales associate. Respect customer/employee boundaries in business relationship. . . . They're there to do/perform a JOB; not to be "your friend." #JustSaying

And then she cries how they treated her poorly by not offering her the bag. If HR had to call her, there is more to the story! No company of that magnitude has time to call customers unless it is warranted. I find it hard to believe that the store HR would call a client over 4-5 emails and demanding wish list??? In one of her most recent videos, she has flipped the switch to Chanel. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Is it love of a brand or an obsessive personality. So much more to life! Great observations, I completely agree with many of your points! Though one thing I will mention - There has to be more to the story on why manager had blocked her and why HR had to step it. Hermes is a major corporation with tens of thousands employees globally…. 99.99% of the time, client issues are resolved by Client Relations team. HR would neverrr reach out to a client unless in extraneous circumstances and they were acting as an agent on behalf of employee, and with full support of the Legal team…. I’m sure Legal had signed off on this because she was harassing the SA and creating hostile work environment. In that case, it’s 100% accurate for store manager not to contact client directly, but pass it to corporate team. There’s probably plenty more emails and things she omitted from the story. Maybe not even intentionally, but probably just forgot things she could have said while emotional…

I agree with you on this one. No company will have their HR team contact a customer without support from management and the legal team. The sole fact that despite labelling the video in bold as "NEVER AGAIN" and that it's over for her or that she'll never ever shop from there again, towards the end of the video, she STILL tries one last attempt to score a bag by stating that she expects Hermes to compensate and offer her a bag for their treatment. Girl, what in the world are you high on?? Anti-dignity pills? No offence but she can try to spend all that money on a therapist first instead of bags to help her see through her cringing obsessions and lack of boundaries. She's clearly blinded by her obsessions and probably needs help.

Ok, so I don't have much sympathy for Mel to be honest. She took a risk and thought she was smarter than Hermes and got caught out and was blacklisted. All's fair in love, war and luxury shopping. However, there is a bigger picture here. I won't ever buy from Hermes on principle. They talk about 'the journey' and building your buying credibility with the brand (link selling...do they, don't they? Who knows?). However, what about the customers journey before they step into store? My mama is a nurse. She has worked hard all her life and saved money to treat herself to a Birkin or a Kelly on her retirement. She can't afford to buy blankets, homewares, jewellery etc and she just wants the bag. The thought that she would summon the courage to walk into Hermes and ask if she could be considered for a bag only to be met by a snooty S.A. who might look her up and down and tell her she can't have one makes me feel distressed. It's not ok. Their marketing strategy is warped. I will be taking her to Chanel instead. Great video Dacob ❤

I have a lot of hot takes about this drama with HERMES and the influencer. I worked in luxe goods, if you are a customer who does some shady/harassing stuff, the brand can blocklist you from purchasing from them. I've had an instance where a customer has it on her profile that anything sold to her is FINAL SALE because she was essentially "renting" luxe goods from the store constantly. She would buy from one location and return at another. The Hermes store manager, I can understand why they blocked the influencer. She's a bit off and he was probably preempting being harassed by her. He should have just let corporate handle it but he also should have the SA's back. As for the influencer, screw her. Using your health to try and get up higher on the buyer list when you constantly just resell it? Hermes was in their right to stop selling to her.

At the end of the day its a store it should NEVER BE SHARED with ANYONE personal information no matter what it takes to get the "Dream Bag" never ever ever tell about your personal story about yourself in the store or anywhere REGARDLESS. This is almost like going out to Publicity affairs and telling everyone that you're Pregnant and having a second baby and then on top of it telling everyone that you just had a surgery on her forehead which she did also mentioned in her video as well. Other than that all i am going to say is It's store doesn't matter if its, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, etc. you should never put your personal privacy to someone else because at the end of the day the SA is just doing their job they JUST DON'T REALLY CARE about what you do and what you done in your life. thats not what they're there for. Absolutely Absurd. smh

I really hate emotional blackmail. It made me very uncomfortable to hear her emails and her repeated sob stories about her trials and tribulations in order to get a bag. I will say that I was at Hermès not long ago and I was trying in rings, and in talking to my SA when she was asking if the ring was too loose I did mention that my fingers were swollen that day because I have RA and that I wanted to try one size down so I could still get a good fit on another day. It so happened that her husband also has RA and we did have a conversation about it for a short time. I didn’t mention it because I wanted pity, but it was pertinent to the situation and not over sharing. I would never go on and on and tell her all of my other woes. And, I didn’t ask for a Birkin afterwards, either!!! It’s always better to keep your business to yourself unless you have to reveal more. If she only said I have to cancel an appointment to have surgery, it’s enough to say that and not go on. The more I think of this situation, the more I can understand why Hermès didn’t want to deal with her anymore.

Hi Dacob: A fantastic vid - your response is absolutely on-point. I agree the greatest issue is HR at Hermes breaching customer’s confidentiality by contacting the customer directly and more importantly, the cowardly store manager. There is strong privacy laws in place in Australia - Mel should have solid legal grounds to stand on if she wants to pursue further.

At the end of the day, it’s just a bag. It’s not worth the tears or anxiety or depression. She is one person in a sea of people who have been denied their Hermès dream bag. Were they rude to her. Yes. Which is, in my mind, another reason not to give them any more money. Or to praise their bags that are purchased through resellers. Why lift up a brand that you think is abusive? If this was a romantic relationship, I’d brand it toxic and hope everyone moved on to healthier and more fulfilling things. Did she cross a boundary with her sales associate by over sharing and sending emails with block text. Clearly. But, the fact that she’s spent years and thousands over this bag obsession seems indicative of some larger unhealthy issues that I hope she addresses.

You hit the nail on the head. I watched that video when she first posted. I didn’t leave a comment. All I could think was way too much info, desperation, obsession etc. If she wanted a rose Sakura bag that bad, she could have bought it from any one of the personal shoppers she’s used in the past. I never asked my SA to start a wish list. I’ve been a fan of the brand since the late 80s. It took 6 years at my now local boutique for my SA to bring the subject up and see what I would like. I kept it really simple. But my SA also knows I will never email unless I would like to make an appointment. Then I let her go with the conversation from there but I keep the response very short. Dacob you crack me up. You should make the riding crop part of your look. 😉

The fact that you call out Hermes for its complete failure in handling this (Purseonfleek) matter in a professional manner is comforting. HR had no legal right to contact the customer. Mel does NOT work for Hermes. This is a "game" a very expensive "game" that Hermes created and developed!! There are many, many different people in the World. Of course, everyone is going to "play" the "game" differently. Some will be good at the "game." Some will be bad at the "game." Some like Mel are going to be terrible at the "game." TOO BAD!!! You created the "game" without publishing how the "game" is played and what the rules are!!! So Hermes CANNOT complain if someone plays the "game" in a manner you don't like. That is Hermes' fault NOT the customer. If you want customers to follow certain rules, then publish those rules for everyone to follow!!! Mel was terrible at the "game" BUT it is Hermes' fault for creating a very expensive "game" without any rules and without any guidance on how to play that "game" FU Hermes!!!

No reason to sell it, she usesher baby fat as a cover up for her reason to sell.

You are 1000% right about human resources contacting Mel, I told her that exact thing as well - total breech of privacy. Human resources deals with EMPLOYEES ONLY. They CANNOT go outside of the company. Totally unacceptable behaviour and everyone all sneaky and deceptive in their dealing with her when the manager could have been FRANK up front and said "This is how it is, this is the problem we are having with you, the end". But no, like true Hermes fashion they skirted around the entire issue leaving her confused, depressed and upset. Terrible TERRIBLE MANAGEMENT!! I told her she should write a personal letter with CONFIDENTIAL on the envelope and personally addressed to the regional manager (by NAME) to explain her experience with the company. I can tell you that will work out amazing in her favour. Every time I have done it - it has shook huge companies down to the ground. It's a trick I learned from my Grandpa, he used to write everyone, every company if he had a complaint or suggestion "PERSONAL & CONFIDENTIAL" to So and So, even the Mayor of the city and received so many amazing responses and commendations from everyone he wrote to. It works!!! (as you know with Chanel).

What a frank and honest take on this matter. Your candid commentary was on point. Mel may not be the ideal customer. She came on as very persistent. But, for me, the profile of the customer was not the issue here. The main issue was how this particular Hermes store did not handle this well. I have been in the sales and customer service industry for a long time and we meet all kinds of customers. Mel is what we can call a “challenging” maybe even a “difficult” customer to some degree. What was really surprising, though, is that it seemed that the Store Manager did not train the SA well to handle this kind of customer and even copped out by asking the HR to handle things. For a luxury brand it is a shame that the SA and, more so, the Store Manager were lacking in skill and professionalism. I can’t imagine how they handle complaints. Ask the HR to handle, too? 😅

I love your commentary on how the luxury SA works. Very illuminating. I'm somewhat perplexed that no one is pointing out that Mel had intimate conversations with a number of other SAs before she had a problem with her last one. I have never approached Hermes or have any intention of doing so but it sounds like the SAs are encouraging a crossing of emotional boundaries in order to hook in the customers with extra good feelings about their store experience. The relationships that customers are encouraged to have with this brand smacks of deep and dirty emotional manipulation of emotionally vulnerable people. It makes Hermes extremely rich as they scramble to prove their brand loyalty. Mel is not the only one to have spelt this out in a video. The difference is that Mel spoke it out loud to their faces which threatened to destroy the facade of fairness. Hermes and other snob brands have a real "treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen" strategy. It's emotionally and financially abusive. If it were a husband you'd throw him out and sue for damages! And when Mel asked why other clients are getting the attention that she used to get, they attack her because they know that they've treated her unfairly but can't bring themselves to face it. Just like a bad husband. Who the hell does this company think it is? Who the hell do the employees think they are? This is a disgusting way to treat anyone, no matter who they are or what their relationship to the company is. I hope they go broke.

I worked in customer facing employment for 40 years. For almost 30 of those years I was a line manager. I wasn't in retail. I worked in Social Services. Both myself and my staff were threatened and abused on a daily basis. HR would never ever contact a customer to challenge them about their behaviour. That was my job as line manager. If I couldn't deal with it I passed it to my manager. HR's only involvement would be to advise managers as to how they might handle the situation and support the staff member/members involved. Interaction with customers is not the function of HR. This is the most bizarre part of this episode in my opinion. Mel may have overshared. She may be a reseller. I don't know as we've only heard one side of the story. At worst all she was doing was trying to buy a very expensive handbag. I don't know what she intended doing with it if she was able to make the purchase but she doesn't appear to have been threatening or abusive to the staff member. This should have been dealt with by the line manager. Having said that I live in Ireland and maybe these issues are handled differently in Australia.

I just came from this young lady's channel. She seems like a very nice girl, her blue pail Hermes bag is a BEAUTIFUL color..I just adore it. However, I do not understand the prices of these Hermes bags, and the fact that you cannot get a refund if you decide you're unhappy. If I spent an upwards of 12 to 20,000$ and more on a basic looking purse, that purse better rub my feet and do my dishes at night. And much of the time, it seems like you are offered a Birkin. The act of choosing your bag, does not seem to happen as it should.. To be fair, everyone has their vices. If people enjoy spending a fortune on a bag they may not be in love with, and accept that possibility, they can.. It is their money after all. These bags look so basic to me, I'm so sorry to be negative. Go get yourself a Chanel, lovelies. You'll get the bag you want and you'll more than likely save a little money ❤💜

Thanks for this video, i enjoyed listening to your point of view. I understand Mel and if she would be my family i would suggest her to take a break from luxury shopping, focus for a while in other things in life that bring her joy, and if eventually it is a real passion, she will go back to it with a new perspective. I do think reaching the point of being content with what you have is important but i get it, i love handbags too lol I am in a different journey than her and is so liberating. I have an amazing Chanel SA, if the quality of the hot item is not OK for my standards i let the item go and i dont feel bad for letting a unicorn bag go. I think more about the items i want to buy, i take more time and i dont impulse shop. The Hermes journey is a dangerous one. I buy at Hermes the items i really love and not at all thinking of getting a bag. Actually, i had both K and B and sold them so im not interested at all in those. Many people buy at Hermes items that they say they love but they dont and thats when they keep track of how much they are spending to be offered a bag lol I struggle to watch Mel’s videos because her wishlist is so long that i dont see a reasoning behind why so many things? Is there an end? I do hope she can find peace and contentment inside of her after such struggle. We must be a bridge between employees and companies’ strategy, taking care of both sides is not easy. BUT we are not allowed to talk with customers, in this case that’s Compliance department’s job. LOL I had to laugh when you pretended to be Mel answering the HR phone call. Honestly, since it is a private business, anyone can contact her as they’re all employees of the company because Mel’s role is just a customer. HR, CA, store manager, CEO whatever, they can all contact her because it’s about HER behaviour to the business. Whether she signed up or not, the information she gave to Hermes is already an authority itself to the company to contact her if there is any issues. There is no breach of privacy even though it is quite unusual for HR to step in like that. A client like Mel is a nightmare to deal with. Love that she could purchase from time to time ($20K a year is not a lot for Hermes, but generally speaking is high); but the energy and time it takes to serve her is painful.

First and foremost, she is an online influencer dedicated to Hermes content. The store people probably knew her, she even said that the people who shop in her branch knew her. I think that her being a public character may have shot her foot. The store probably knew her online presence and activity (including her reselling tendencies, selling all the bags she got from them and all the makeup samples and even packaging online.) And they didn’t like that. They might have confronted her about that OR not, you know Hermes, haha. But who knows only half of the story was told.

I think everyone who wants to buy one of these bags should be required to watch her video. Make sure they know what kind of culture they are supporting with their money.

I unsubbed from her channel. Since this video, she finally got her Hermes dream bag. The title alluded "she was done". She is/was a reseller and all the drama was unnecessary. I hope she is happy now.

Wow! Was it from the boutique or another reseller?

there are two sides to every story and the truth is usually somewhere in between -- you are spot on with saying everything in life is relevant to one's situation - only disagree about letting go of SM as we don't know the other side of story and perhaps something more happened that was left out but who knows? have shopped with hermes for a long, long time and it has always been chill for me but I am pretty laid back and have never viewed any store nor hermes as a journey (that word, eek!) love ya babe! btw, what are the best books on coco's life that you would recommend? thank you!!

I agree completely with your analysis. There are a couple of factors I think you left out though, which is that Mel has a very public ebay store that was linked to her social media, with her name, selling knockoff Chanel and Hermes replica items. She also is selling Chanel and Hermes packaging and "freebies". I think this definitely was a factor, along with so publicly and openly selling her B25 in rose azalee, her first store offer. She also talked very openly about buying a lot of other Hermes bags on the preloved market and selling them too. I think these things could've bothered the SM and maybe was the reason he blocked her on social media? Not that it is an acceptable reason at all for a SM to block a customer, but maybe it was the motive behind his thought process.

that was my point with Hermes. How dare the human resources called her about their staff. its disgusting and zero professionalism. sure they can refuse selling her bags for her on selling activities. but to do that to her is rude and bullying.

I commented on her original video that the way hermes birkin fever is real for women and likely men. The current Rolex steel sports fever is the male equivalent...I've heard stories of guys wining and dining the AD bringing them Donuts and champagne lolol I somehow walked in (2 years ago mind you) and bought an explorer 1. I would honestly feel so weird trying to schmooze the AD like that. Just more retail games lol

It’s human nature to want that which is hard to come by. I’d be happy to own the Tudor Black Bay. No long waitlist for those timepieces.

Oh my,HR calling was the worst thing ever....how are they still working there,and how someone comes up with an idea to call someone like that? HR is a strictly internal department. And I wonder how that manager got promoted to manager at all,having the problem to grow a pair....hmmmm. Such a mess. The woman did her part,yes,but they are the company. I lean more towards them if we talk about who is guilty.....

Oh God… I came across this video the other day. The whole thing is just humiliating. It’s 2021 and H keeps whoring their bags out, the worst is that people keep whoring themselves out for these pieces of leather. There’s Chinese factories out there making exact 1:1 replicas of Birkins and Kellys, it’s not like it’s the most unique and intricate piece of art. Imagine spending 200k on a bunch of scarves and those hideous clic clacs, those H sandals just to be offered a bag… Go buy from another brand!!! Save your money, go buy a house! THAT’S an investment.

Simply put: she suffocated them and they smelled so much desperation that they thought she was mentally unstable. Have some mystery about you lol. The emails were so damn long IIIII couldn’t keep up with what the hell she wanted, and I’m not a SA from Hermes with 20 other clients!

I unfollowed her precisely because I feel like she’s buying and selling her bags all the time, it becomes frustrating to watch after a while.

Wildly late to this but I'm studying economics and am working on a research piece on luxury economics. Y'all it is INSANE that Hermes etc. act like they have any right to stop you reselling. Sure, they can refuse service but nobody signed ANY enforcable contract when you exchanged currency for a good. Also, the way these freaking merchants act towards customers is bizarre. Why put up with any of this unhinged behavior from these brands. Nothing is worth this. It's a bag. It's not art. It's mass produced (mass production btw does not exclude hand made items. It means there's more than one made, clearly what luxury houses are up to). I guess thanks for the hilarity of watching people pay to be abused?

The woman's entire identity is wrapped up in Hermès. I found her to be a very narcissistic and sad character.

It’s not that I don’t take it seriously because I don’t believe you, but that I can’t believe you would Rumpelstiltskin your un-conceived CHILD to get a bag. Lord have mercy.
