Goolwa Cockles 2021

My brother and I recently paid a visit to Goolwa Beach near Victor Harbor, S.A. to collect cockles or pipis for bait and to eat. The cockles were not readily found but we did manage to locate some that were under about 15cm of sand and all had to be hand dug! It was hard work but after 4 hours we had accumulated our bag limit of 600. For some reason they were not found washing around in the surf like normal - it could be fishing pressure and being fairly well into the season or maybe it's just tide related - I would be interested in any thoughts about this.

Thanks Jaron! I haven't fished the MG area for quite a few years now, but remember Lakes Edward and Leake as being really good for redfin. In saltwater, I always did pretty well at Carpenter rocks fishing the reef if the swell is down and there are quite a few local bays that you can wade for big garfish. Port MacDonell jetty is reliable and Nora Criena (up the coast a bit) for salmon - good luck!

Nice one mate! Makes me want to head down there as I could do with some fresh bait for the winter whiting season.

Thanks! With the price of cockles these days, it makes sense to go out and get your own!

That's not something I've ever done or even known about, but it sure looks like a lot of fun!

It is good fun Rohan - until the tide starts rushing in! Then it becomes snorkeling for cockles!

Hard work Frank. It would be nearly 50 years since I went after Cockles, down on the beach in the Coorong. The Cockles were easy to get, the hard job was the slog through the sand hills to get to the beach. Getting out of the dingy on the other side and wading through the black mud wasn´t fun either.

Yes Keith, I've done that too, but long before the ban on cockling on that side of the mouth came in. I remember finally arriving at the beach on a stinking hot summer day and falling into the surf to cool off before picking up as many cockles as I wanted (just rolling about in the wash) and then repeating the walk back to the boat. We looked at maps to determine the shortest walk required before we went but it was still a chore! This is the first time that I have had to dig for them on Goolwa beach - I suspect that with the cost of cockles and the proliferation of 4WD's, they are getting a real working over every season and it may not be long before the area has to be given a rest.
