GoPro Chin Mount Motovlogging Set-Up (this video features a GoPro Hero5 Black with the mic adaptor/battery eliminator but this set up can be done on various other set ups). Provides an overview of my updated set up and 2 mounting methods that I use: the J Hook mount & the Short Arm Extension Mount. This video will most likely be of greatest interest & use to those who are new to mounting a GoPro onto a helmet/Motovlogging or who are looking for other options for mounting their GoPro.
_
There are most definitely various other set-ups and mounting systems; this is the one I chose to use for it's simplicity, low cost, less need for adaptor and extension pieces, and low profile/more streamlined look. Some other excellent options you may wish to look at include:
Motonosity - GoPro Chin Mount Motorcycle Helmet Setup goo.gl/WfOij0
A Girl and Her Bike (AGHB) - Mounting A Gopro to Your Helmet

_
I am from Beautiful British Columbia & I ride a 2012 CBR250. My motovlogging setup is a GoPro Hero5 (primary cam) with custom DIY mod for the chin mount & Ion Air Pro 2 WiFi (B/secondary cam).

LOL Thanks Josh! It is really a very very nice set up. I know so many have been put off by the mic adapter and lack of sena Bluetooth compatibility but for me the sena was non-issue and I think the mic adapter's ability to concurrently be used as a battery eliminator was well worth it (not to mention the 5's voice control, image stab, etc). I think it really depends on what each of us really wants in our set ups! :D

This is a great video, I am working on mine now for a Shoei Qwest. just waiting on paint to dry better. Using the 3m tape to mount.They claim it can pull a dent out of a car so it must be good. Holding off on mic adapter just yet hoping they come out with something smaller. You did a fantastic video.

I know hey?! It is huge! But I do love how it can be used as a battery eliminator if so desired. Just wish they had created it so as to allow us a choice if we want it...so odd that they just didnt come up with a mic adapter and then mic/batter elim set up....

Pretty sweet! I just bought a chin mount set up from A Girl And Her Bike works pretty well but if I get tired of it I might try this. I like how you put the sticky pad on the helmet underneath it so you can take it off if you want.

That was some nifty modding! (might even try this at some point too!,thanks, now i know how to,step by step) In my experience trying new things, almost always pays off, its worth the hassle. Always keep pushing the limits and try new things,new camera angles, mic setups, videos styles ,formats etc. off to ebay to buy some velcro i go! Cheers!

Very nice, and again, good job on the mount there... This is the perfect example why I never got the Hero 5. There is just too much added to it to make everything just so bulky. You need a mic, plug the adaptor in which is the same size as the cam! I'm happy with my old Hero 3 and Hero 2. Cheap and simple to use.
@CanadianMotoGal
@CanadianMotoGal 7 лет назад
LOL yes Deanos, for sure it makes things a bit more difficult. I was actually very very close to going ahead and getting an older GoPro instead but figured I would give this one a go as it did have a few features that I really wanted and felt would offset the grief of the mic adapter a bit lol. Namely, the image stabliz, voice controls, extended batt life, and mostly, that it can be used as a battery eliminator. It is too bad there is 'give and take' with it tho as it would have been nice had they considered doing the mic adapter/batt eliminator as an accessory if wanted but a simplier mic set up for those who didn't want the added feature! It will be interesting to see what/if something comes up to give us greater options!

Good setup and explanation. I had no idea that the Hero 5 needed that extra adapter for audio.
@CanadianMotoGal
@CanadianMotoGal 7 лет назад
I didn't either at first so very glad I researched it well before buying as I would have been annoyed finding out afterwards! It is also not compatible with sena bluetooth as of yet which is also a bad move on the part of GoPro IMHO. However, that said, the pain of the mic adapter did not outweigh the other "wants" on my list so I decided to suck it up and go with it lol. I really like it a lot so far!!

Wow - that mic adapter is crazy big! Makes me glad I stuck with a Hero4 Black. 😄
@CanadianMotoGal
@CanadianMotoGal 7 лет назад
LOL It's about 1/2 the size of the camera! It is a bit of a pain but for me, the benefits of the other things and also that I can use the adapter as a battery eliminator if I want to definitely led me to the 5 direction. I really love it otherwise. I almost did go with the 4 though due to the mic adapter! Hopefully they come up with something for those who don't want to have the adapter as a batt eliminator and only need the audio. We shall see!! I am thinking this was a big off-putting move by GoPro in many ways- they should have devised 2 options really IMHO.
@knerdrider
@knerdrider 7 лет назад
I agree. Since I was upgrading from my Hero3+ after it took a swim in the Caribbean I wanted a camera that would plug-and-play with my existing setup (cases, mics, etc.) The Hero5 was NOT it. It's more like when Apple switched to the Lightning connector and made all those iThing cables and docks that have been around for years suddenly useless.

Been using the chin mount since my first video, It really is more immersive. But because I'm a pain, I've decided to switch it to the side. Mainly because I'm going to start shooting in 4k and wanted the camera further back. Definitely going to have to use that Velcro tether idea.
@CanadianMotoGal
@CanadianMotoGal 7 лет назад
Awesome! I am really curious about shooting in 4K - thinking I just don't have the editing set up for it tho! I still like the side view and definitely you have a great reason for going back to it 👍 The Velcro is still holding up perfectly. I still wish it was more of an actually click mount like the gopro mounts but it works fine :D.
@ApexMoto
@ApexMoto 7 лет назад
Canadian MotoGal Had a quick test of the side view and didn't like it lol. As for 4k it can be a pain, as it adds to render time on the videos. My Mac just sounds like it will explode when editing 4k. But once it's done and finished it does look good.
@willmatic84
@willmatic84 7 лет назад
I'm loving the chin view 😙👍 it's crazy how we come from side views to chin view 😄 I love tour set up but the only thing I hate bout the hero 5 is that damn adapter 😥 I hope go pro make a different mic adapter in the future cuz I like the hero 5 and for stablebility option but let's see 😎
@CanadianMotoGal
@CanadianMotoGal 7 лет назад
I am really liking it too - I still like all the different views but this one definitely feel more like "viewer is the rider" lol. I hear you about the adapter - I was the only thing that was really putting me off on buying it and hopefully something will come along that will replace the need for it. On that note, the huge benefit to it is for those of us who hate having to switch batteries out/charge etc as it also serves as a battery eliminator which is pretty freakin awesome!!! So I guess it has both pros and cons!!

Hey, great video, thanks for sharing. One question, with the way you have it mounted where it is on the short arm so it is slightly higher up on your chin, do you find that the camera obstructs your lower field of vision at all?

@CanadianMotoGal
@CanadianMotoGal 7 лет назад
Mounting to some of our helmets is like an art and a science to try to figure it all out!! As a newbie to the gopro world, I was a bit overwhelmed with all the bits and pieces that so many people use!! The mic adapter definitely adds to it but if the velco tape works out, then it's actually not too bad but yes an extra 'box' makes it all the more complicated!

Did you have any problem getting the velcro tape to adhere to the back of the mic adapter? Mine seems to lose it's stickiness after a time due to the rubbery material of the adapter.
@CanadianMotoGal
@CanadianMotoGal 7 лет назад
chohan33 Hey chohan, mine has been ok so far with no coming off/perling away but I did scruff up the back of the adapter box with rough grit sandpaper and then scrubbed it with rubbing alcohol and let it thoroughly dry before mounting the sticky velcro to it so perhaps that has helped to keep it more solid. I am thinking it will likely start to peel away eventually though - really wish GoPro had included sime sort of mount for the adapter as this is my main complaint about it!
@chohan33
@chohan33 7 лет назад
Canadian MotoGal. Aye, I agree an adapter mount would've been nice. I tried the sandpaper trick the last (3rd) time I stuck the velcro, then let it cure with a bit of weight on it. Hopefully it'll hold long term. Thanks for the reply. I enjoy your vids... subscribed.

GoPro have just made things way too fiddly. Not sure I'd want to do all that. I know Drift audio is a little awkward now. Shame they never thought of motovloggers.
@CanadianMotoGal
@CanadianMotoGal 7 лет назад
Oh no I didn't know that about the drift - what have they done with it? I do adore the image quality of the drift. I agree this 5 is a little more 'fiddly' for sure but on that note, I do really love that the mic adapter can be used a battery eliminator, especially for longer trips that will be very nice. I guess it's some give and take with this model for sure!!
@RevvedUpBiker
@RevvedUpBiker 7 лет назад
They've got the same mini USB slot for the microphone, and they give you a large awkward cable. It was much easier with the old Drift to plug up a mic. The new Drift has issues with mic volume, hopefully to be sorted with firmware.
