Hey Google Boy! Thanks for watching. Normal dash cams also have their good points - most of them start when you turn on the engine unlike the GoPro - but the quality of the GoPro is pretty hard to beat. All the best.

I just bought GoPro Hero 11 Black and when I initially set it up there was a software update... as FYI for everyone... the menus in this video will only appear if you have the "video mode" set to highest quality. If you don't the option for looping will not appear. Also, if you change the video mode later to "Extended Battery" or "Longest Battery" the option for looping will not appear. It only works with "highest quality". And, GoPro has removed the options for 30 seconds... the minimum looping time is now 5 minutes. took me a while to figure this out so thought I would share what I found.

Hey Ken, thanks for your comment. I originally filmed this video on the Hero 9 and some things have definitely changed in the menu since then. *This is Better than a dashcam because, you can record longer videos. On a dashcam each clip is only 1 to 3 minutes long. I'm buying a go pro & using it as a dashcam.* 💯

Hey Jesuit 7. thanks for watching and commenting on the video. gopro is a very good option for a dash cam but make sure u remove it from your car when u stop. you don't want to attract thieves and gopros can shut down if they get too hot like if they are left in vehicles. all the best
@anthonya824
@anthonya824 Год назад
Also, on the topic of the camera heating up, I imagine that removing the battery and running the camera solely on corded power would minimize heat generation since the discharging/charging battery wouldn't be adding heat to the system. There is a compromise with not having battery backup, but the choice is yours.
@AdventureTimMedia
@AdventureTimMedia Год назад
Hi Anthony A. Running it straight off the USB in the car would definitely lessen the heat but if the vehicle stalls or when the ignition is turned off the camera will shutdown straight away. I would be reluctant to employ this method as i would be afraid the data may corrupt from the sudden shutdown. At least with a battery in the camera there would be less chance of this happening.

Hey You Seir. Thanks so much for your comments. The suction cup is extraordinarily strong when fitted correctly. @@AdventureTimMedia Yeah the subarus have the cameras for the anti collision system. Mine has three in the front. The camera in the back is for the rearview mirror but it also warns me when I'm about to get rear-ended. The downside is that every once in awhile the car hallucinates and slams on the brakes for no reason. My sister uses the DJI Osmo. The downside is that you have to power it on and press the record button. It has the loop function enabled.

Thanks for taking the time to make this video and share your ideas and knowledge, very helpful and well explained. Unless I don't understand the looping feature, it may be prudent to increase the looping time to cover the entire card. If involved in a driving mishap, It would be easy to forget to turn off the GoPro and overwrite the important footage while tending to the effects of an accident or other mishap.
@AdventureTimMedia
@AdventureTimMedia 5 месяцев назад
Hey JoeyJig! So sorry to take so long to reply to your great comment. I'm so glad you found my video was helpful. You have raised a good point. If you are in an accident, worrying about what looping settings you have applied is the last thing you want to worry about. Your safety and the safety of your passengers and / or other drivers would definitely be paramount. I can see where in that scenario letting the GoPro record to the remainder of the card before looping would be the best thing. The Twenty mins time frame i mentioned in the video is just a decent amount of time for most situations but the good thing is the gopro gives you a lot of flexibility in this area. thanks again for your comment and raising a very important point. @@AdventureTimMedia Good to hear from you. Keep up the great work!
@ryan370
@ryan370 2 месяца назад
@JoeyJig just a heads up, the looping function doesn't work the way you are thinking. In fact, the "max" setting is the worst setting to use for your scenario! The way it works, is that they camera will record for the given interval, then it will stop, save the video, and then begin another recording. If the memory card fills up, the least recent video will be overwritten on the next save. So, if you are have an sd card that can save 6 hours of video, and your camera is set to record 20 minute intervals, then when you look at the files on your card after some use, you'll have 18 videos on that card, each 20 minutes long. So if you get in an accident and leave the camera running and the 20 minute interval ends, your camera will save that 20 minute video and delete the oldest video on the camera (from 6 hours ago, minimum). Now, if you have it set on max, you can run into the issue you mentioned! Say you've been driving for 5 hours and 50 minutes, you get in an accident and continue recording for 10 more minutes. Your card will fill up and delete the long 6 hour video to make space for a new 6 hour long video. So having the camera set to 20 minutes (I personally use 1 hour) is actually better than max, in the off chance you get into an accident 5.5 hours into a long road trip

2x Hero 8’s and 1x Hero 11. 2x Rove R2-4K’s as F/R Dash Cams and older something for driver witness cam! 2x R2-4K’s were cheaper, and just as effective as 1 H8. My R2-4K’s work great as intended. Sometimes a differing perspective is nice but not as a full time Dash cam! Here is an example of what I can do with my Hero8/11’s: 1 piece of AstroTurf, size approx 3x3 inches square. 2x pieces of lightweight 1/4” wood (I.E., pine) angle cut from point to approx 2-3 inches height and 6” inches length. Glued with popsicle sticks into a ramp. The ramp serves as unobtrusive cover for the GoPro. A small battery supply connected via short length of wire (USB to USB C, for example) to provide ample power continuity to the GoPro camera. The set up is placed approximately 10 feet forward of the pee wee/little league batter box. A video of all the kids when at bat is a treasure! All parents must sign to approve each child or the video, of the disapproving parents, is deleted! A keepsake video for the parents, as all kids are permitted how ever many swings to make a connect with the ball! This can be set up easily for an actual game or even just a practice session!

Those cons can be fixed with some DIY like placement or a bracket for your dashcam, and aircon for high temperatures. The only real downside I see is when you're not in the car (like 4hrs in a shopping mall), you cannot leave it recording because it would affect its lifetime. A solution would be to add another device such as a cheap dashcam with impact sensor pointed at side windows from an angle, or DIY using an arduino with a motion/impact sensor with a physical means to press the GoPro recording button.

Also, instead of a GoPro, I was wondering whether a battery security camera could be used although they might lack video stabilization needed while driving.

Good video on showing how to use a GoPro as a dashcam. I suppose if high detail is the only important factor then it could be a solution for some. Here are some reasons I would choose not to: * Price. You would need to get 2. One for front and one for rear: around $350+ x 2, plus suction mount: around $65 x 2. All USD plus any taxes. Plus anything else for installation to hardwire power. * Heat. If you operate the GoPro in hot environments like in a car under sunlight, it will likely overheat. When overheating it will shutdown and not be recording. Plus, since these have Lithium-ion batteries, temperatures above 45°C (113°F) will damage the batteries faster and cause bulging and battery life/capacity loss. Not to mention the fire hazard of bulging batteries in hot environments too. That's why you don't see many dashcams now with Li-ion batteries. * Theft. Since GoPros are expensive, multi-purpose and desirable, they are likely to get stolen if left in the car for park mode operation. If you decide to take them with you when you park, then it is more hassle, inconvenience, time consuming and more to carry. Plus, no park mode protection. * Event tagging. The GoPro will have continuous recording but not event tagging for impact, motion or manual recording events. If you have ever had to review security footage without event tagging, trying to find a particular event is time consuming. The event tagging that dashcams do is meant to help save time and find events faster. Plus, you can enable write protection to prevent event footage from getting overwritten. In the GoPro, you will have to get the footage right away to ensure that it doesn't. If you decide to do it later but forget, then you could lose the footage. * Power. If you choose to have park mode you will need something that will monitor the car battery to prevent the GoPro from draining it. Not to mention you are using 2 GoPros instead of one dashcam. I suspect the GoPros also have higher power requirements each. If not using them for park mode then you will have to turn both off when parking and both on when starting your drive. More inconvenience. All these reasons may not seem like much but once you start doing this you will probably stop wanting to use the GoPro as a dashcam. Though, everyone has different needs and priorities so different solutions apply. So it may still be the route for some.
@AdventureTimMedia

You literally missed the biggest tip using your GoPro has a dash cam. You can download a “lab” firmware from GoPro to turn on the power on and off automatically when power comes through the USB port. So when you turn your car on/off the GoPro will power on/off as well.
@AdventureTimMedia

Hey I used to live in Louisianna! Thankyou so much for watching and your great comment. i wasn't aware of GoPro labs until after i filmed that video late last year. Using that firmware would definitely make the GoPro even more user friendly. I think I may have to do some kind of video or short on your idea in the future. Another option with the GoPro is you can use voice commands to turn the unit off and on while you are in your vehicle. I may have to do that in the meantime. GoPro batteries are lithium-ion batteries and not capacitor batteries like the normal dashcams. This means that if you have to leave your car out in the sun for some reason for extended periods of time then the batter is going to inflate (and could get damaged as well).

Hey Jose, thanks for your comment. If you have a gopro hero 5 - 11 it comes with a GPS option that you can then turn on. If you play back your footage in the quik app with GPS enabled you can choose to put these measurements ( ie. Speed, altitide etc ) on your footage. I'm bringing out a video on this topic in a couple of weeks. There are also third party options too but you do have to pay for them. I hope this helps .

Caution: The GoPro camera will get very hot from having the media mod attached while used as Dash Cam. It will also get hot by keeping a battery inserted as well! USB power only, w/o battery, negates the heat, but drawback is the camera cannot close out video w/o battery if power is lost! Possible solution is to either use a direct to battery USB connection or to use a small sized power brick via USB. That way the power to the GoPro will continue. And, if you are parked somewhere, such as grocery store, it will perform as a witness cam!

Hey Jeff, thanks for your comment I like your idea of hooking the gopro up to the power bank, but then the whole set up does get a little bulky. Hey Ace, firstly apologies for taking so long to reply and thanks for checking out my video. From your post it sounds like you have hypersmooth on - which is great in normal situations- but if you are using it as a dashcam only have it in the 'On' setting , not Boost or Autoboost. The two latter settings will crop your footage more tightly and I think that's what may be causing you issue. The camera is working hard to maintain stabilization at all times in those settings and so prioritises stabilization over everything else. Also, what frame rate are you using ? Normally 30fps should be OK. You could try 60fps but it would use up a lot more space. Hope this helps . Again apologies for taking so long . Hit me up if you have any further questions. I like the linear horizon view. Also, will the suction mount work on the dashboard,or does it have to be attached to the windshield? Also, if you attach the usb cable to use as the power source, are you supposed to take the battery out?
@AdventureTimMedia
@AdventureTimMedia 2 месяца назад
Hey Kenn, thanks for your comment. I'm also a big fan of the linear Horizon view. I find it works best in most situations and has none of that fish eye effect which is ok sometimes but can get distractingly. As for the suction cup mount, I've normally only used it on the windshield and outside on the metal chassis of the car. It is pretty impressive but you have to make sure it is properly suctioned onto your car before you take off. I made a video about this cool mount that you might like to check out. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N-HWIaF7Yao.html . Regarding your last question, you can take the battery out if you wish but normally I wouldn't. The battery is a failsafe incase you accidentally bump the USB cable while you are out filming. However, if you were going to be filming where the camera is in the one spot for a long time and there is less danger of the cable getting knocked - ie. you are doing a time lapse or night lapse - you might want to take it out. If you are using this method though, your camera won't be waterproof. You can buy a pass through door, which allows you to cover the battery compartment but leave a space where you can connect your USB cable, which is a good option, but again your camera won't be waterproof. I hope this helps.

Hi Causa. Thx for your message. You can go into the looping settings on the gopro and adjust the looping length of time from 5 mins to 20, 60 or 120 min, so it will overwrite your footage once it hits the time selected. If you select Max setting , the gopro will record until the sd card is full and then you will need to copy the footage to your pc or format the card to use it again. One point to note is that the gopro will record in 5 min segments. if you select a 20 min loop you will have four files. If you record for 23 min while in 20 min looping mode, the gopro will overwrite part of this first five min segment. I hope this helps. Any more questions, please hit me up. All the best

Yes, it will also be nice to have a record in case of mishaps, too. I thank you in advance for any answers on this. =:)
@AdventureTimMedia
@AdventureTimMedia Год назад
Hi there Judy, Thankyou for watching and your very kind words. Completely filling up the SD card sounds like the perfect fit for your needs. The GoPro will break up the recording into five min bite sized pieces by default even if you do choose to fill up the whole card. It may sound strange but it is a lot easier to manage that way and all segments are timestamped so you can easily find the segments you want if you need to go back over them for any reason. Once you download your footage, you can format the card and re-use it again and again. Buying a couple of cards would be a good idea for your purpose. You can change the cards how often you like then. The one sd card -if it is a good brand - should last you thousands of uses. I use Sandisk Extreme and Extreme Pro and they have never let me down. You can normally pick them up for a good price on Amazon. I hope this answers all your questions. If you have anymore I am happy to answer them. All the best.

Hi Bugokish! Thanks for your comment. The mini would make a very good dashcam but you would have to keep it well ventilated to keep it from overheating - especially on summer days, so i would recommend having the AC pumping if its hot where you are. The mini has an inbuilt enduro so you might want to try connecting your mini to a usb port in your car to save it relying on battery and possibly generating unnecessary heat. I have the Hero Black and being able to remove the battery and connect it to a diff source has proven useful. Also , if you shoot at 1080 you will generate less heat than at 4k the same applies to frame rate. 24fps would be better than 60fps in this case. Also turning your display brightness down and ensuring your rear screen saver turns off at the lowest setting - 1 min - should help too. I hope this has been useful. Good luck.

Hey Anonymous O. Sorry to hear you have been having troubles with your camera. but thank you for your great question. I have been doing some testing tonight and I think I have worked it out. What happens is the five minute interval is recorded but is is broken up into 1 minute chunks, If you playback your video, your timer will count up to one minute and once it reaches that time, it will then start playing the following minute and so on, so you actually do have the five minute interval after all. Interestingly it looks like it only saves the footage as a single file 1 min file when you look at the playback menu on the rear of the gopro, but, when you put the micro SD card into your computer, you will see you actually have 5 one minute files! I hope this helps. If you have any more questions, please reach out. I am happy to help. All the best.

@AdventureTimMedia
@AdventureTimMedia Год назад
Hey Welder REACTOR ! Thanks for your comment. As the gopro is a little camera that works really hard is all conditions good ventilation is the key. I've found using good AC has definitely helped in the over heating department and if you are leaving your car, I recommend taking the gopro with you. Hope this helps.

In a different video you compared two GoPro units mounted as dash cams side by side. With a dual mount, could one unit record forward and the other the cars coming up behind me?
@AdventureTimMedia
@AdventureTimMedia 9 месяцев назад
Hey Katy, thanks for your question. You could possibly do it if you had a gopro attached to a Suction mount on the front windscreen and then the same setup on the rear windshield. If you then turn on voice control on both Gopros, and then say ' gopro start recording ' that would work. I hope this helps. btw this might be a good idea for a video. Let me know if you'd like me to make one demonstrating this idea. cheers.

Curious how freezing temps in winter (5-30 degrees) adversely affect the camera and will it even work when left in the car? Thanks!

@AdventureTimMedia Год назад
Hey Wayne. Thanks for your question. Unfortunately I live in a climate where the coldest or gets to in winter is around 5degrees Celsius ( 41F ) , so i cant honestly answer your question. I know the new enduro battery is supposed to still perform well down to -10 degrees Celsius ( 14F ) but the older blue hero 9 batteries shut down at around 32F. hope this helps .

@AdventureTimMedia 24 дня назад
Hey @happysnowwhite ! Thanks for your comment ! If you tap on the oblong at the bottom of the rear screen ( it will probably say video ) it will bring up a menu showing all your video options. Scroll to the bottom to where you will find + Create New Preset. The next screen will offer looping as one of your options. Select it, tap on the tick at the top right corner , choose your settings and then hit the tick agsin to confirm. When the next screen appears, scroll to the best option - ie. Motor. And tap the tick again. Hope this helps.

I have one of these and it's been rather useful, but I recommend you don't use a Gopro as a dashcam unless you have multiple vehicles that you can swap cameras for (Including a motorcycle) or that they use lithium ion batteries. Which can expand, pop and cause a fire in hot or really cold environments. Even leaving it in your glove compartment is a bad idea. This will do in a pinch if you're like me who already has a gopro and needed something in a pinch as your existing dashcam was a dud.
@AdventureTimMedia
@AdventureTimMedia 2 месяца назад
Hey @UlyssesFartknocker ! Thanks for your comment! Great point you raise about the Lithium-Ion batteries. As amazing as they are with higher energy efficiency, longer cycle life and calendar life, Li-ion batteries do contain flammable electrolytes that can result in explosions or fire if damaged. The Enduro batteries have a different chemical makeup than the standard blue capped batteries and perform better in extreme conditions - in particular the cold - but I also would not risk leaving them in the car. In the video I recommend taking your Hero with you if you are plan on leaving your vehicle. You can leave the mount on the windshield, pop your GP in your pocket or backpack and then re-attach it once you get back to your car. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I hope things are going well for you in your amazing part of the world. I have very fond memories of travelling through Texas. Especially the time I took a big bite out of a green chilli after mistaking it for a capsicum ( green pepper ) at a steak house there! #getthisguysomemilk

@AdventureTimMedia
@AdventureTimMedia 13 дней назад
Hey @DjangoGroen, thanks for your comment. Once you put the preset into your GoPro - in this video it was titled looping - that preset is going to remain on your camera - unless you choose to delete it. If you turn on the voice commands setting you can tell your gopro to 'Start Recording' and it will do everything for you hands free. Hope this helps.

What about overheating..or you put a fan to blow on it😂
@AdventureTimMedia
@AdventureTimMedia 8 месяцев назад
Hey Valdemar1 ! Thanks for your comment! I found the GoPro didn't really overheat when I was driving as long as I had air circulating around the cabin. Some folks prefer to remove the battery and just have the camera connected by USB when they use it as a dash cam. This way you allow any heat in the camera to dissipate more easily as the battery door is open. It's not a great look though, but it is an option. A fan would also work as an option too. You can get one for around $20-30 AUD. I hope this helps. All the best.

Have you ran into it overheating and shutting down?
@AdventureTimMedia
@AdventureTimMedia Год назад
Hey Alpha Bravo Cheesecake! Thanks for your comment. If the car is hot or lacks decent air circulation I've found there is a greater chance of overheating and shutdown. Taking out the battery and connecting the camera to a USB port can lessen the chance of overheating too. I haven't tried using the new enduro battery in the gopro to see if that makes a difference. gopro claims it works better in extreme temperatures so that may be a possibility. let me know if you'd like me to do a short on testing it out. hope this helps.

Hey SoluriZe, When the car is turned off there is no power being generated by the vehicle so unfortunately you would not be able to keep charging your gopro. For security sakes I would recommend taking the gopro with you when you leave your car. Thanks for your comment.
