4 years later and this saved me from buying a new camera. I have a hero 8 black and it keeps overheating, screen goes black and it does that freeze frame thing with no warning. Thank you!
I carry two GP8 cameras one for my main footage and the other for b roll, I’ve been so frustrated over the last few months as this very same issue was happening with camera b. Thank you so much for taking time to create this video and sharing your experience. I’ve lost so much footage over the past few trips, can’t wait to give this a try!
Holy crap, thank you so much. I literally just bought a hero 10 and it keeps on over heating and glitching/freezing. I did this and it stopped. Thank you 🙏
Only video i found related to my almost similar problem - the difference being i am having this issue on my hero 9 which supposedly updated over wifi and in my case their is no audio after it freezes. So basically only initial 10-20 secs of clip is saved. Will try this today and let u know if it resolves or not 🤞🏻
@@YakFam what i have noticed till now is that the freeze issue happens whenever i set bitrate to High. When using standard bitrate it seems to work fine. I am assuming the gopro processor is not capable enough to handle huge data, but i might be wrong. I’ll update if my observation/theory is wrong.
@@gauravarokks My Hero 9 has had very bad freezing or just stops recording and the file will be corrupted after I just do 3 short video's less than 3 minutes long. I am snowmobiling at 25 to 35 degrees. I tried only 1080 30 frame sec but makes no difference. Once it recorded only 3 seconds locked up and the screen was frozen too. I have reformatted the SD card that came with the camera. No luck. I have an update from Nov 26th . 1.50.00 I should have used the camera more right after I got it I would have sent it back asking for a full refund, too late now. Got it Nov 26th. I have Hero 4, 5 , 7 but this has been the worst by far. I will have to try the new up date but was not sure how to manually up date till I saw this video.
If the video and sound stops after about 20 seconds, that seems like an SD write speed issue. Basically there is an internal buffer that go pro saves video stream to and then it’s written from there to the card. If the card is too slow for the resolution, the buffer will fill up and the the camera will error out. Use a card that’s V30 rates. Or use lower resolution if your card is v10 or lower speed.
Thanks for the vid. I recently got a GoPro Hero 8 Black and its worked good for me so far. No freezing yet, but I’ll definitely keep your tips in mind when it does happen to me if I use regularly. I may go ahead and have a couple spare SD cards formatted and ready to go so its not a huge issue when Im not near a PC. Could maybe fix the problem on the spot and keep rolling.
I wish I could help more, this is just a fix that worked for me, I dont have much insight into why it wouldn't work or if there may be another problem.
Thank you Will. I am from South Africa, and struggled with the exact same problem on my Hero 7 Black, lost so many good fishing videos due to the same problem. Do you perhaps know if it freezes up when you connect the gopro to a mobile battery pack, basically keep it plugged into charge while recording? Because I have done this once, and did not have problems, and works pretty well, and you dont need to buy extra batteries. I would appreciate your opinion on this, and maybe even do a test video for us.
I have no idea,. Most of the time I'm using my GoPro I'm not able to connect to battery packs because of danger of direct water contact to the internals. I would think once you have a solid firmware, it shouldn't matter what mode or battery setup you have.
Thanks so much! I can totally relate to losing footage due to this issue, so frustrating! I’m gonna try this for my GoPro max and see if I have any luck!
My go pro is freezing just like that. Audio only video frozen. This happens only when I’m riding my snowmobile. Have you made a link to this happening in extreme cold? Thank you for your video. Hope it helps. Brand new memory card. Still have to format it?
So it seemed like the cold was causing it, but once I did this update a few times it was fine in 12°F. Then after ~4-5 manual updates, I no longer had any issues
@@WilAlexander ok. I’m riding in -15 with a wind chill at -35. It’s fine till it gets cold. When it’s not cold it doesn’t happen. Go pro hero 8. You can see the glitches and flashes on the screen before video goes on. Too bad. Had go pro 8 since last may. Never on issue till it gets cold. 🤔. Idk. I’ll try all that work. I’m a minute away from smashing on the ground and getting a new one for free thanks to go pro plus. Hahahaha.
@@WilAlexander u fortunately made no difference. 6am and I’m riding out to sylmar and it freezes up again. This really sucks . Funny thing is I spoke to my mailman super cool guy by the way and he says he’s got the GoPro hero seven which he puts on his motorcycle all the time with no troubles I may have gotten a lemon I’m not sure but I was wondering how you got a hold of a GoPro representative because well they don’t pick up the phone.
@@bobseason4668 It's been a few years since I've talked to them. I think I started with the Contact Us form which started the conversation, then I did unfortunately have to sit on the phone for 2-3 hours to get someone who could actually answer my question.
@@WilAlexander hey wil , I talked with gopro yesterday... They are taking in my go pro 8 and since they are out of stock at the moment , they are going to send me a brand new goPro 9..I hope this camera is bugfree and give me the performance I expected from GoPro... Thanks for your help Wil
So is this info just for future use and fixing the problem so it doesn’t happen again? or did you actually recover the lost footage? Cause I’m trying to recover my lost footage. Is it possible?
Unfortunately lost footage is gone. Once it's been recorded in that corrupted way, there's no way that I looked into that will recover anything different.
@@WilAlexander ok thanks. I’ll definitely be cautious when filming now but it’s such a pain when I’m snowboarding in the cold and the battery drains like nothing I’ve seen before. I read to turn the wifi off when filming to conserve battery so I’ll try that also because this frozen footage seems to be happening when the battery is at 30% or less.
Other creators have made videos talking about this problem saying it's the speed of the sd card isn't good enough. It has to be a really high speed card.
Same here. I just just git back from Tahoe, and my GoPro Hero 8 did that to me and only got half my runs. I was so mad until I saw this video. I will try this as soon as get home.
Totally agree, and it continues with the Hero 9 Black and there is no assistance on what to do when you get the frozen screen when you have just been shooting video. I'm now needing to do a forced reset by doing a battery removal as the screeen has frozen and I'm likely going to lose an hours worth of footage. Very pissed!
FrontI thought that was the issue Initially, but I on different days it froze with GoPro and 3rd party batteries. I don't think the app is a reliable source of updates - I had a friend get a brand new 8 a month ago and it had video recording glitches after the update through the app.
ive tried multiple ways of updating my gopro, and ive also factory reset it a few times, but every single time i start the update, it never completes. It just stays on the black screen with the gopro and arrow on kt. how do i fix this to complete the update?
Yes, that is completely frustrating I have the gopro 8. Besides the sucking battery performance it's stuck all the time. I'll try this! The proplem is there was no update for this model since 2019 I guess there will never be one again
For the battery - you can try replacing them, and make sure when you're not using them to not keep them in the GoPro, when they get left in, the GoPro's in a Ready to Shoot mode at all times which is a slow drain on the battery trying to be ready to shoot at moments notice.
2:28 in Portugal got the same conversation with support, they told me to avoid that I should update EVERY single time I will use the camera, not one time a month, incredible
Was yours in the GoPro protective housing? I was wondering if mine was overheating in the protective housing maybe causing it to freeze. It hasn't frozen outside of the housing yet.
@@WilAlexander My Hero 9 does this at about the same temp snowmobiling, I get 3 short videos of 3 minutes or less before the problem of freezing video starts. Once the camera shut it self off and then worked 10 minutes later but the video that was recorded when it shut itself off was lost.
Thanks for the vid mate. I tried and unfortunately did not worked out for me... I suspect more and more the battery. And/or the connectors inside the GoPro... I had no issues with the cam at the beginning, and now it starts to be a real pain in the butt 😡😡 Lot of footage frozen as you described which are ruining a lot of my shots... 😭 Any idea on the battery thing (I have official GoPro's batteries
@@WilAlexander at least GoPro is responsive. They are changing my Hero9 black under warranty. I'll try a few thing with the new cam. I'll let you know if I figure out anything (cam, batteries and/or SD card)...
Knock on wood I haven't had the freezing issue that you showed in this video but I am currently dealing with a blank LCD screen and the camera not powering up in general. As I type this, I have my GPH7Blk sitting on my desk fully powered on to my surprise but when I pick it up and added any type of movement, the screen glitches and flickers which makes me feel the LCD screen is possibly damaged. One other thing I tried is I connected my camera to the Quick app (formerly Go Pro App) and was able to fully control my camera with no glitches from my iPhone. In a pinch this could be an option. In the meantime I may try the full camera reset to see if that fixes my camera but I am thinking it might be something else that is causing it to glitch when I move the camera around.
I've never come across that issue with mine and, I'm no GoPro guru, but I might try connecting the the GoPro App. Or try connecting via computer, or even see if there's a reset without using the screens (some button combination).
I forget what kind of reset they call it, but if you have the gopro on and pull out the battery while it's running, sometimes that quick power cutoff can reset some issues.
I'd say probably not. I'd shell out the extra $150 for the 9. Only reason the 7 would be worth buying brand new is if you're just doing art timelapses or you need a second camera to thrash.
Hey :D I'm going on vacation soon this summer and would like to film this with an action camra I can borrow one from a friend I have the choice between the osmo action and the go pro 9 the go pro 9 has better colors in the go pro collor mode because i cant Edit the Videos after but I am afraid that I will lose a lot of videos my question Does the go pro 9 still freeze often? I hope you can help me with my choice bettween this 2 action cams I will only Vlog my Sommer vacation
I've never used the osmo before, but I've only had glitching issues with GoPro when it's below freezing and typically below 25°F. The only freezing issues I had were between December and March. Likely due to batteries generally performing terribly in the cold.
I have update the software but when I record within 2 to 3 sec its turn black and it automatic power off and one but when I put a charger then its run good like before its was ..plz help me
I'm not really sure. The only resets I know are the factory reset in camera and pulling the battery out while it's running. You might also try turning the camera on then recording - I've heard a lot of the GoPro issue come from the quick capture capability. May also try a new battery, the batteries for my 8 will be fully charged but start out at 70% - the older the battery the less it holds a charge.
If you notice this happening during heavy vibration or shock, take the battery out and with a curved pick tool bend the 6 retaining tabs out slightly. This issue can be caused by the battery having incomplete connection with the terminals.
I was, but found a stable firmware edition that's been good since March. And actually reading the manuals will likely help with most other features that are coming up as "glitches"
It's likely a shooting setting and/or your computer. Some computers without a dedicated video card cant handle some of the heavier shooting modes (4k 60 or 2.7k, 120). The playback on the gopro is using the .lrv file -Low Resolution Video - it's 480p or 720p.
Hi Wil Alexander, I bought a new GoPro 8 black, when I connected it to my Phone app it asked me to update go pro software. I proceeded with the process to update my software, but it stalled at 10% then I tried again later that evening and this time it updated up to 50% and then would not update any further Since the 50% update, my GoPro does not work None of the functions are working, also nothing is displaying on the display screen No menu or view, it is blank In-short my GoPro is not working. I have tried all the processes available short. cuts online such as hard reset, and reset, etc. nothing seems, to work... also tried your way for reset but its still not working
I would remove the phone app and try updating with the fully formatted card and avoid using the gopro app to update the gopro. I've found the more separate I can keep them the better they work together.
Hi, all. Im wonderig if this method works for you. I mean i just opended mine from the box and did some shooting for about an hour and the camera started to freez... So first i thought it a defective camera and now i see that everyone has this problem... it would be beter for me to buy DJI osmo action when i was decideing which to buy...
It will kind of reset, if you pull the battery while it's on. But you should try to convince your dad to update it. "Why would you want your device to operate less than it's best?" GoPro's updates only fix bugs. They're not like apple and put performance slowing code in.
I have the hero 8 and I notice while recording and when I try to stop recording it takes about 6 to 8 second to stop. Then when the screen shows what it is looking at it starts jumping around and spazzing out and I have to turn it off or take the battery out and when turned back on it works great for a few shots and then it starts again so I have to repeat the process.. I am so disappointed with my first even go pro
That's wild. I've only ever had to pull the battery when it's below freezing out. The cold temps tend to mess with the battery and then the camera because the battery fails.
Hi Wil. Thank you for information. I just follow your adwise and hope it can solve the problem. My GoPro just fail and it is on a job making timelapse off af big building thats are going to be taken down. Yesterday my camera freeze after taking 218 timelapse photo. 1 photo every 60 sek. and the machine are working for 11 h a day. so I lost over 440 pic. Soooo not good. yesterday and to day i read that is a big problem for GoPro 7 and seams also to be a problem for GoPro 8. Earlyer today I think I have to bay the GoPro 8 for my job and then I read it has the same problem. It's totaly CRAZYYYY If this problem come again I have to find other camera
Wil Alexander Hey Wil After manuel Update as you show I have Take about 5000 pic. with 1 min. interval with No freez problem. Hope I will keep on Working. I will some thimes Update manuel to try to keep it works. BUT now I get New problem. I dont get the same start LCD screen. I all time have screen there shows How many pic. taken and show me How much power on batt. Settings in the bottom. But now only one red spot and How many pic. taken. I want so many information as I Can get. But the screen chance from start to start. Dont like that the camera not do the same every time I push start. Do you have a idea what wrong?? Thanks for tip 🤗
If you're updating between each use, the update reverts everything to the defaults - So you'd have to go back in and readjust all the settings you like. I've found a stable version, so I haven't updated in 5 months.
I've tried this. I also bought their enduro batteries, so I'm not sure which one solved the problem. I can say the enduro battery last considerably longer than the standard at 20-40°F
@@WilAlexander Yep. I gave it a chance and it actually works really good. The freeze issue so far hasnt happened again. I guess I turned into a whiny spoiled consumer. Glad I snapped out of it.
always wanted a gopro, BUT they always had issues with freezing, glitches, etc.... the 9 is super glitchy, unresponsive. GoPro could get away with a lot of stuff because they were the first and biggest player on the action cam market for way too long. consumers shouldn't put up with unfinished products anymore, just because a company thinks it has to be on a schedule to come out with a new model every year. by now it seems to be a given that you get an unfinished product and you hope for software updates. when did that become the new normal? I don't get it. something not working as intended? don't buy it, send it back. stop throwing money at a company that takes its customers for granted.
I agree with you. I didn't have any issues with my 5 so I was fine buying the 8. You'd think once they found and figured out the issues with the 8 there shouldn't be any more, but turns out they don't have their stuff together to give the new cameras the most current firmware.
@@WilAlexander hi sir since I was updating my goprohero8 I took I took a vedio in seconds then freezing it and glitches..what should I do sir?what are the problems is the battery or I need to reset it?
Go Pro Makes a lousy product. I've purchased 2 hero 8 cameras trying to fix this issue and mine glitches worse. It turns all purple and glitchy with flashes before dying. I think its a temperature thing less so factory reset issue. I can see factory reset helping but not fully solving the fact they make a trash product these days. Go Pro if you are reading this, thanks for the horrible customer service and and lousy product. You have blown it for me on 2 professional shoots.
This problem just happened with my Gopro Max 2-3 months ago. All the vdo files I took are all gone. Very frustrate and want to throw the camera on the floor. Never trust this camera again.
ALL GO PROS HAVE THESE ISSUES NOW... After a over a year of use they just die or become completely useless my Hero & black is just useless after a year and 3 months of use. All fixes tried, with no avail. Same screen freezes, glitches, overheating, LCD display intermittent flickering/failures, battery drainage when off. ///// UPDATE!! GoPro tech support requested me for the original proof of purchase (receipt) and sent me a brand new replacement camera in exchange for the broken one (without accessories of course) and so far the new black 7 I just got (as of March 2021) has had no issues so far.
The Cannon R5 ($3,899) overheats after 11 minutes of 4k use. So it really just depends on the user and usage. Battery drainage when off is pretty normal - It's trying to be ready at a moments notice with no bootup, so it going to drain some battery staying in a ready-at-notice mode. Your phone has a boot up process from fully off, GoPro's "off" is the phone equivalent of shutting down the screen temporarily - it's ready to go in 2 seconds. I've also had no issues with the 8 since this, and none with the 9.
Absolute pile of Dpggy do this camera is pants mine does it too and overheats the wind noise is Poooo! the most aweful camera ever made by anyone. Nope still the same after factory reset V2.0 update memory card format etc etc it's still the same this camera should be recalled, it's rubbbbbish
What are you doing with your GoPro? You might need to adjust your expectations of cameras. The brand new $5000 Sony 6K camera's overheat after 10 minutes. Performance can change based Settings, Memory Card capabilities, and also the weather.
@@WilAlexander Just recoding video 4k 60 4k 24 4k 30 1080 anything it's all the same the thing is Poo Poo my hero 4 silver rocks it in everyway, Ive tried it with out any stabilisation always the same red hot then it stops recording pictures and all i get is Audio the dam thing is unusable factory reset it twice now formatted cards various cards new battery even run it from a power brick the result is the same red hot and fails me all the time even recorded it inside a fridge still gets red hot and I am not alone there are many complaining of this camera never known such a remarkably aweful piece of tech.
They're honestly really reliable, I think most of the issue is cold. Batteries and electronics dont tend to do well for extended periods of time outside below freezing. My only glitching issues come in January-March.
@@WilAlexander Thanks for replying :) my biggest fear is the freezing issue, I just bought one for my wife for Christmas, now im watching alot of vids about freezing and touch screen issues!
Are you using the Micro SD Card Extreme "PRO" or just the Micro SD card Extreme??? This guy says that using the SD Card Extreme PRO the problem is solved. See his video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4Mz9_By2zak.html
Interestingly I have the Extreme PLUS. It seems odd to me that GoPro would offer buying the standard extreme to customers when they could negate all these issues with an additional $1 bulk cost for supplying the "Pro"
