It's funny when people try to compare MMA, Boxing, GI, NoGi, Wrestling.... etc.... they are all different sports. Like trying to argue that Lebron would beat Federer at tennis because they both have a ball.
@insidetrip101
@insidetrip101 3 года назад
@@Jeremy_Walker I agree. And no offense intended to the op, but I wouldn't even say that they're "equally as important." Important relative to what? Is basketball equally as important as tennis? What does that mean? Of course, we know what people mean. People mean "In a fight." But that's kinda missing the point. Just about any athlete (especially combat sports athlete) is going to be able to defend themselves "in a fight." That doesn't mean that they're all "equally" good at that, its kind of impossible to say what is better. Because by the time you start putting controls and artificial constraints on "the fight" such that you can actually "measure" the effectiveness of the "discipline," then what you have is just some variant of MMA. When it comes down to it, people just want to belong to their "camp" and they want to promote their "camp." Sometimes that means you got to convince people that your camp is better than the other camps so that they join you instead of the others. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, I just think the problem is the logic in which it is done. I'm not saying self defense is pointless to think about, but if you're doing this for self defense, and you're not constantly going everywhere scanning your surroundings, putting your back to the wall, living like someone who has ptsd, etc, etc, then you're doing this for a reason OTHER than self defense. And that's ok, maybe you just "like it," and find it "fun." Is that such a bad thing?

Both are important but BJJ is more important.
@Joel-yp6fv
@Joel-yp6fv 2 года назад
@@MikeyMinimo I think if anything wrestling is more important to be a dominant fighter. Teach a wrestler some basic BJJ submissions and defence and you’ve got a potentially great fighter. However if you teach a BJJ player some basic wrestling takedowns and control they’ll still not be as good. This is due to wrestling taking more time for people to get efficient at, because of how exhausting it is + the power and speed needed to do it, and basic BJJ is not overly complex to learn or as physically draining.

Why did Ryan get scragged? I thought he was best?
@seanreed9472
@seanreed9472 Год назад
If we allowed submissions of course Ryan would win....but in terms of pure takedowns, not even close. Downey just toyed with him. However, the question is, when someone is punching kicking you, then what matters. Well, if the person with the better punching and kicking has better wrestling, at least take down defense, it does not matter if you have Gordon Ryann levels subs, you are screwed. On the other hand, if you have better takedowns AND better subs the person with better striking is screwed. It is all about matchups, but we can see why wrestling is so, so important. Even in some mMA fights where we don't see much wrestling, wrestling is still often the deciding factor.

Not a huge fan of Gordon but as an elite wrestler myself, MAD RESPECT for lacing up the wrestling shoes and doing that publicly. Pat Downey should feel ashamed of himself for acting that way. You’re an international level wrestler and boasting about beating someone who has NEVER been a wrestler. Dude is a clown. Not to mention that in Gordon’s sport (BJJ) you tapped to a half-Nelson. So there’s that.

That Quintet match was under sub only grappling rules, this match vs Downey was with wrestling rules that are a lot more different than sub only grappling, and also Barnett's record in grappling is not very good, yes he defeated Dean Lister and one Gracie called Ryron, sounds cool but that is not gonna repair his 5 defeats under bigger names like Ricardo Almeida or Mark Kerr (actually i would like to see a Gordon Ryan vs Kerr in his prime match, however that is only a dreamatch)

@@thejookking Nobody thinks Barnett has a chance against Gordon. Barnett is a good grappler but he's not on the level of the top 0.1 percent of elites like Gordon Ryan. Barnett and Gordon are similar in size. Barnett is just a bit bigger but nothing significant. Barnett is focused on MMA and Gordon is pure jiu jitsu. Barnett came from catch wrestling which is a bit different than no gi jiu jitsu which is what Gordon only does.
