im still so in love with how badass both guys were to just give the fans what they wanted. No love lossed for Nicky Rod, he used to wrestle but still has all the respect of being amazing at Jitz. I love that they put their pride/ego aside and were just like "hey this would be a badass match...lets do it.
Pat Downey one of the best athletes in Wrestling at his size that ive ever seen!!But this match i enjoyed just by the actions of these young men!!GREAT SPORTMANSHIP N RESPECT FOR EACH OTHER!!VERY IMPRESSIVE!!!
@@liamorwhat2665 that’s what this guy is saying. Nicky is an average college-level wrestler, and an absolute monster at Jiu-Jitsu. He wrestled for a long time before getting into BJJ, but as soon as he got in it was mayhem and now he’s the animal “black-belt slayer” he’s known as today. But against other high-level wrestlers like Pat Downey or J’Den Cox he’s still average at wrestling at best (mostly cos they actively devote themselves to different grappling arts-obviously a wrestler only will be better at wrestling). But yeah.
@@napalminthemorning8309 bro average ?💀he don’t stand a chance against Pat Downey what makes u think he stands a chance against a Olympic medalist athlete
I think wrestlers that don’t compete in bjj should shut up about wrestling in bjj at high levels, that’s way outside your scope, wrestling is not bjj you don’t know what you’re talking about. Sometimes you’re right but I don’t think it was even on purpose some times. Lol guys a lot of wrestling ceases to matter because the moves will just get you submitted. Some guys guiottines are off the charts in bjj. Taking a shot is risky. You won’t lose points because it got stuffed you’ll just instantly lose the match. There’s not a lot of high level wrestlers at the top in bjj because those guys don’t make it that far. That’s why. A wrestler is going to have to change his game immensely. Nicky rod doesn’t dominate standup in ADCC. Let that sink in. He is a former wrestler and his control and intensity translates to bjj. It wasn’t his takedowns at the highest levels rofl. The comment saying that wishes a div 3 wrestler would dominate bjj. you haven’t watched nicky rod in ADCC recently.
nick sizemore lol I’m not mad you guys are tho cuz that’s why y’all are asking why can’t it be like flo wrestling play is beat you easily in real life boi
It’s really awesome how they brought attention to wrestling with this exhibition match! If I ever have kids, they will💯he signed up for wrestling & jiu jitsu.
Can anyone explain to me why Downey got the 4 pts early when i thought he's the one got countered and flipped over by the other guy? Im new to wrestling 🤼
@@kuriouskoopatroopa3129 But what if you're more comfortable playing with your back on the ground? Like I'm more dangerous with my back on the ground than otherwise.
@@farzana6676 anytime your back touches the mat your opponent has advantage, so "playing off your back" is suicide in wrestling, but taking away the idea of pinning for points, working from the back is extremely fundamental to other sports such as BJJ and judo
@@kuriouskoopatroopa3129 I think these sports should come back to the roots and represent real fighting. The rules in Wrestling, BJJ and Judo have moved away from the core basis of the martial art which was to use in real fight. That's why I see alot of wrestler, they give up their back which is very dangerous in real fight.
Had a good wrestling career in high school. Went to jiu-jitsu and destroyed everybody. Came back to wrestling and got dominated. There's levels to this game.
I am a bjj competitor and how can I not agree with you there is probably 1000 times more wrestling school than bjj So yeah for obvious reason the wrestling scene is more competitive
In a sport where all you have to do is push people off the mat. Congrats on winning? This is more sumo from what I can tell. Wrestlers give up their backs and get choked out daily. There's level to this game.
Wreslting without BJJ knowledge get choked to death or arm barred or foot-locked. BJJ actually knows how to finish a fight. Wrestling is masterful at taking you down and humping. BJJ is masterful at ending your night. We just watched gordon ryan and bo nickal prove this again for the thousandth time. Wrestler want NO part of the ground vs jiu jitsu. if they know what they are up against they do everything in their power to run away and play defense. 🤷🏾♂️
@@G1stGBless BJJ is still a martial art, BJJ matches are different than Wrestling matches. BOTH are NOT fights, needed to clarify. It is apples to oranges, adding strikes into the equation changes things up a bit. Of course, BJJ guy > Wrestler on the ground since they train for that and submissions. Wrestler > BJJ guy with standup, pressure and top control. Both fall under the grappling discipline umbrella. They are different
@@yasinpatel12345 I never really understood this sentiment? What's a fight to you? A boxing match? There's loads of things in grappling more dangerous than getting punched in the face, leglocks, key locks, joint manipulation, chokes that aren't allowed in boxing but are in grappling. It's just as dangerous too go watch that Russian that snapped his neck when he failed that flying armbar. All those things are illegal in traditional stand up and that's a fight but someone choking you unconscious isn't? Okay.
I'm confused why Downey got the point at the very beginning...clarification please...Downey was pushed into white area first then did wiz and got the point
Back exposure to the mat. If ur gunna throw someone with that kick move you gotta make sure he doesn’t cartwheel like Downey did. It was a act of desperation from Nicky rod bc he was driving the single leg
Space Cadet I was thinking so haha but some of these kids in high school are legit generic freaks especially some of the heavier weight classes looking like grown ass men
Well when you have a rule set that totally disarms Nicky Rod, what do you expect? Original wrestling included submissions and pins. I would like to see this if Downey could submit or pin Rodriguez for 3 seconds without him able to escape.
@@InvisibleHotdog what I meant by totally disarmed is that the submission part of wrestling that Nick Rodriguez is known for was disallowed. Nicky Rod competes in a different sport, and we all saw how Pat Downey performed when he was trying to compete in the sport that Nicky Rod excels in. He was submitted by someone who didn’t qualify whilst Nicky took silver, losing to the most successful and dominant competitor in history, Gordon Ryan. At that weight class, Gordon seems unbeatable and it’s almost just a battle for second place, which Nicky obtained.
@@dylanb2086 I think Pat would have lost EASILY against Nicky Rod in his sport- submission grappling. Pat got sub’d by a dude who didn’t even qualify for ADCC whilst Nicky took silver, losing only to the most accomplished of all time, G. Ryan.
Point fighting for pushing someone out of the ring? Horrible system outside of sumo. I’m sure these are some good wrestlers too. Coolest thing this match got going for it is the mullet.
I think the last suplex wasn't very neat.... my understanding of it is that the back of who get suplexed should touch the floor before of who throws! Am I incorrect?
Shotokhan not really. So long as you have complete obvious control and you initiate the throw, some guys bridge so hard that their backs hit the mat at the same time of the opponent. In freestyle that’s a clean throw, it might not be awarded 5 points, which is the usual maximum for a clean nice back suplex, maybe 4 , but there will be no question as to Downey getting it , neat or not neat. Hope that helped.
Bro your out of your mind D1 wrestler. He wouldn’t stand a chance against any legit D1 heavyweights. In Jiu jitsu. He is just wrestling a bunch of guys who don’t know really how to wrestle. He puts on his IG page “NCAA wrestler” to fool a bunch of people like you
How old are these dudes?? I always wish there was opportunity for wrestling after high school or college. Hardly any open tournaments for masters level. BJJ or MMA is your only option
@@ws8061 Nah, Gordon started playing meanwhile Bo was trying to adapt to this new environment, i think Bo needs to readapt his wrestling for sub grappling, if he stills shooting fast, learns some guard passing technique (like the " Hulk Smash" guard pass of Hulk Barbosa) and uses the craddle to get submissions then Nickal can make it great in grappling.
