I knocked on Vinny's door back in the summer of 2017 in Vegas and sold him pest control. He didn't know at the time but I was struggling to make sales that week and he really helped me out. The dude was super down to earth, I mistakenly asked him if he and Jose Aldo we're in the same weight division lol Let's continue to help others like this guy helped me cause you may never know what their current situation is. He deserves all the respect and success in the World.

Maybe unusual, but still, adequate is one correct choice for what i was trying to imply. Vinny stalled. Vinny stalled vs Tonon too. That says a LOT about Vinny's mentality vs DDS. Sub only is where it is at and I bet Vinny would lose there when stalling isn't an option.
Vinny wasn't stalling, he was trying to get into a superior position before going for a submission. To Gordon's credit, Vinny couldn't mount much offense, but neither could he.
Roddy Yang You are an uneducated casual at best. At their level, one cannot simply use force to get what one wants. It takes a combination of skill, timing, finesse, force, power, strength, aggressiveness and most of all mental strength. I get it, from your perspective, forcing subs on Blue Belts and down happens much easier and more often, but try forcing your way with one of these two gentlemen or any of their caliber and you will be the one tapping, if you have time to.
Leglocks are like any other submission in that you have to set them up before applying them. Vinny did a good job of stopping Gordon during the setup phase. Notice how Vinny stays heavy on the bottom locking leg around 14:00 when Gordon is setting up the inside saddle. If Gordon got that bottom leg over his foot trapping Vinny's leg, that would have been bad for Vinny. By stopping the setup, he avoided the conditions under which the leg lock can be applied. Good work. The best way to beat a RNC, kimura, arm bar, etc etc etc is to avoid the condition under which they can occur. Thinking that leg locks don't work and not avoiding the conditions in which they thrive is a good way to end up on crutches.
Александр Панасевич exhibition match, we were teammates, in the same event we closed two brackets, gi and nogi, and he “tapped me out” with a kneebar in gi, and “I tapped him out” in nogi with a kimura.
No, he STALLED and didn't' even mount any offense to try and win with a sub. I was a fan of his, but no more. Garry Tonon vs Vagner Rocha says it all. Points mean nothing, only subs.
@@sharkparty1027 agreed. Points mean nothing, but nobody got subbed. The only person that advanced positions in their attempts was Vinny. That's why he won.
This is supposed to be a combat art still right ? If you screw up and find yourself on your back, a good guard is awesome, but don’t reward people who put themselves there on purpose. And how is Vinny stalling? Gordon wants to stay on his back just as much as Vinny does on his knees.
This is what makes BJJ so unique and awesome. The evolving nature and adaptation. Gordon is at the top of the leg lock game without question. He is also accomplished well rounded jiu jitsu and has one of the best back RNC subs around. I have been to seminars with him and for a young 20s he has a long time to improve. Imagine him at Vinny’s age? Now, with all due respect Vinny had a clear game plan and figured out how to neutralize what would normally be devastating leg locks. That it was points or sub only really doesn’t matter. Gordon also proved his point and he could have had he chosen changed his game easily but he didn’t for a reason. Nothing here was by accident. In the end it was just one match and you need to see the bigger picture. I for one look forward to seeing Gordon’s leg lock game evolve to address Vinny’s pressure advancing strategy. Vinny was very effective. Both phenomenal athletes. If anyone else thinks otherwise, prove it on the mat. Talk is cheap. The mat never lies!
Bro none of us here can hang with either of these guys. None of us on you tube can even begin to hang with them but that does not mean we aren't better teachers,,,,I. E. John Danaher
Eddy Stocker agreed. I cant speak for Vinny cause I have no experience with his teaching but Gordon is very good as a teacher if his seminars are an indicator. He is loyal to Danaher and his method.
@@eddys.razorxp6445 If John Danaher didn't have health issues and he was 30 years younger he'd be ever to, and no one in the RU-vid comments section knows more about BJJ than Vinny or Ryan and definitely not as much as Danaher.
Bilbo Baggins Didn’t won because he’s stronger . Vinny won because Ryan’s offense is very one dimensional and he doesn’t have a B game to go to. I doubt vinny even prepared for this match specifically he just did that he normally does . When you’re a true master of Jiu jitsu you have a complete game . Vinny comes with a dynamic series of moves in every position and can flow with what happens . Gordon just flops and tries leg lock , rinse and repeat. Soon everyone will stop it when he tries and he will be back to the drawing board . All the fads and trends only work so long then you gotta improve the overall game . Over the years I’ve seen the de la riva, spider guard, kimura trap, x guard ,berimbolo, and worm guard all come on he scene and devastate in competition then become common knowledge , and now they are just small parts of everyone’s game .
I can’t believe that so many people gave Vinny little to no chance. He’s had adequate leg lock game longer than Gordon has trained Jiu-Jitsu. BTW, who’s the lead announcer? He is one of the best subject matter expert announcers I’ve ever heard. Very knowledgeable and a good wordsmith to boot.
Vinny has no chance in sub only. All Vinny did was stall like a bitch. I was a fan, but no more. Many thought he was coming for the kill/sub. Dude only came to stall and win by points like a bitch.
Roddy Yang Roddy Yang Roddy Yang I understand that it is much more entertaining to see blood or balls-to-wall rolling. However, most of the events that allow point-based wins are won on points. Think of IBJJF - most of the world championships are won on points and/or advantages. It is only expected that experienced grapplers will utilize the rules to their advantage in order to get the W. At the end of the day, those who won are known as world champions, not “bitches”. BTW, it takes two to tango. It’s not like Vinny “Schaub shut down” Gordon. He put the pressure down and frustrated Gordon’s game. Why didn’t Gordon exploit Vinny’s game plan to submit him? Also, I am not sure if Gordon would beat Vinny in a sub-only match. Gordon recently ballooned and it seems that he has a hard time adjusting to the fact that his muscles require a whole lot of oxygen. In a sub-only event (especially the one with no time limits) he could get stalled on and eventually succumb to fatigue before being submitted. I think that in a sub-only event, Vinny would have tougher time with Garry Tonon.
Roddy Yang Garry’s win was most impressive. However, he did not destroy Vinny. He beat Vinny in OT, by maintaining control position over longer period of time. I was speaking of sub-only with no time limits. I believe that in that format Garry could actually outlast Vinny and get the sub. Besides being technical, Garry is a cardio machine.
Garry got his shit pushed in by Lucas Lepri, who is significantly smaller than Vinny. Get rid of the EBI OT bullshit, and Vinny would handily beat Garry.
For the people complaining that Vinny was stalling: If he was, so was Gordon then. I think neither of them were stalling. It's very easy to say someone is stalling when you're not there on the mat.
Stalling is a legit strategy what did carlos and helio/elio do stifle much larger stroger opponents then stall let them burn out then easy finish thats one of the main strengths of bjj I think
Vinny made a takedown(2 points) and then passed Gordon's guard(3 points). In BJJ, points are awarded to: takedowns(2), Knee on Belly(2), sweeps(2), guard passes(3), back takes(4) and mount(4). This is a way to remove draw if time runs out and nobody submits.

He was slow and fat looking. it def affected his game but who knows maybe he didn't care much. I heard where he felt he was retiring in a few years already. Maybe his mind os off. he looked terrible good enough to destroy 90% of the world but not VINNY.
Amazing to think Gordon hadn't even really trained under Danaher yet and how much he's improved since this match. The 12/15/2022 rematch is gonna be a no-contest. Sorry Vinny lol.
16:16 Gordon confused how he lost given that Vinny did nothing for the last two rounds, Vinny confused how he won after having stalled for 13 consecutive minutes. Points rulesets blow my mind sometimes, wtf is this bullshit where you score points then do nothing for the remaining 95% of the match? What happened to finishing people when you get a dominant position? Perfect example of control that leads to nothing lol
You could make the same argument against Gordon’s style: what good is a guard player if you can’t get up and take your opponent to the mat when you’re down on points ?
@@S0CD0C In my opinion, the onus is on the top player to actually attempt to pass the guard, but to each their own. Gordon does play a more reactive game and you see that here - nothing wrong with that but becomes hard to do if your opponent is hesistant to engage. Nowadays he's definitely more adept at dealing with someone who's reluctant to pass because of his more proactive guard playing style. Gordon made some genuine attempts at sweeping Vinny, trying to elevate him and made strong submission attempts when possible. Vinny did a good job in the opening round at hip switching past Ryan's hooks and landing in side control, but he didn't make any attempts at submissions or advancing position once he got there. He basically hugged Gordon until he escaped. The remaining two rounds were Ryan pushing the pace and trying to make grips to elevate Vinny, while Vinny only worked a negative game and didn't really do much other than the pass. I haven't watched the full match in a long time though (my original comment was from 5 months ago) so I might be missing something from my analysis.
Vinny aint SHIT and has been a black belt 10 years more than Gordon, he came with a especific surviving strategy. There is a reason he never wanted a rematch with Gordon
They don't have shoes on. They can't grip canvas. Its really hard to shoot like a wrestler ion that matt with no shoes ,,,much experience. Also a GR uses that to simply engage he doesn't care if he is taken down in a fight to him it doesn't matter no points and thats where he believes he's best on bottom.
I agree, it's hard to shoot barefoot on a sweaty mat, even with shoes. Just stating a gnarly double would be a good tool for the tool box. I'm well aware he doesn't give a shit what I think though.
Gordon should of changed strategies when guard wasn't going his way. Maybe get up and take Vinny down. See what he could do from there. Use some wrestling exc. Too one dimensional here
NaturalPugilist He played the same game he always plays. Sits into half butterfly, looks for scissor sweep, dummy sweep, or inside sankaku. It's just that Vinny knows how to stuff all of that, and Vinny's wrestling is better so Gordon had no chance to implement his top game. Gordon is still a badass tho.
Roddy Yang totally wrong bro , he won by points and he shut down the leg lock attempts that's a win in its self and I think that was vinny's plan from the start
Also...Why does Vinny get a point when they are clinched on the ground when it seems no one is in a dominant position...@2:44(ref touches Vinnys shoulder)-2:40(point to Vinny)...Whatttt?
5:00 I feel if Gordon would have secured the heel and really hipped into that knee this match would have been finished in DDS leglock fashion; just didn't seem he put too much effort into that attempt and the leg was there for the taking!;'(
@ 3:24...Vinny passes Ryan's guard.....The ref acknowledges it by putting up his hand after waiting 3 seconds(acb jj rule book) but Vinny doesnt get any points for the round..He should have gotten 3 points according to their own rules. What did I miss???
@@boxman_ninja0819 Wait..... From when you are saying..They give him the points before he does the pass...(The time I mentioned is after the time your mentioned) How did they know he was going to do it before he did it?. Wouldn't it make more sense to give him the points when he actually does it.🤔
Vinny surely won the match but he was stalling and did a great job of defending those leg lock entries and creating pressure, Gordon was the more aggresive out of the two.
lol stalling??? someone who was trying to pass guards? I think Gordon was the one who was fk stalling lying on the ground during the entire match. These Gordon' fan boys are like Conor's fan boys lol out of countrol
Dude come on go back and watch. Gordon is on bottom giving a beast like vinny the top game the whole time. He tried a million times to enter attacks but vinny simply backs out or stalls by dropping his weight and back ing out. They are both highly skilled and a guy with that talent decides to back out he will. He did not force the action. He did not engage. He was in full side control with Gordon not even trying to get out and went for nothing.
@@scarred10 when Gordon tried to escape side control he wanted to turn his back,he wanted to turn facing away from opponent.I was like wtf never turn your back to opponent. Its like beginners mistake.Just what I noticed, maybe im wrong.
Vinny was so defensive mode. He barely mounted any offence. Except a few pass attempts. Super conservative not taking any risks. Not really willing to engage Ryans guard game. Ryan looked physically sluggish and slow out there. Why was he just casually trying to force stuff.
It looks absolutely ridiculous they need to punish people for lollygagging around in the guard -3 points for pulling guard or at least score it as a takedown
