In this one, I show you all how to make cabochons from ammolite or pearl inlay! This is a very simple process that only requires a bit of rock for backing and ice resin to produce some absolutely outstanding jewelry from materials that are usually too thin or fragile to use! This method opens up a whole new world of options when it comes to making jewelry! Shells of all kinds, fossils, ammolite, and even stones too soft for use in jewelry are all candidates that benefit from this fantastic method of stabilization! I hope you all enjoy this one and possibly learn a few tricks to add to your arsenal! Definitely look forward to an upcoming video in which we will be making rings and pendants using these cabochons and cabochons from a recent video!

Ive found using a lighter once I coat the ammolite works well, since you can get bubbles coating it. A quick flame and boom they are gone. No need to a pressure pot. You dont want to use a vac chamber or you;re resin will foam up and make a mess. If you ever work with resin use a pressure pot!

@TheoKellison
@TheoKellison 3 года назад
Glad to have you! And i wish i had a full cabbing machine! Have to make due for now with my flat lap. I only use this method with stuff that is either too thin or too fragile to cab normally; you can scratch most montana ammolite with a fingernail so it is not really fit for cabbing without a resin coat but it's also far too pretty not to use! Thanks so much for watching!
@yoopermann7942
@yoopermann7942 3 года назад
@@TheoKellison hey dont feel bad about not haveing a cabbing machine, a lot of great pieces have been made with less equipment then you use! i started this way and still continue to this day, some thirty years later.

Wow!!! Just wow!!!! I’m so happy you posted this! I can’t wait to try this!!! Does this work if the piece of shell is concave? Or is it waaaay more complicated
@TheoKellison
@TheoKellison 3 года назад
Yes absolutely! The only issue is when the shell is convex; the resin will start trying to spill over but a concave surface will actually help the resin pool and make a nice high dome!😄
@KatyDidRocks
@KatyDidRocks 3 года назад
Great video, Theo! Does the amolite come from the baculites and ammonites you've found? I'm wondering if I actually have some. :'D
@TheoKellison
@TheoKellison 3 года назад
Yes baculites can have fantastic ammolite as well, it's just that ammonites have more color on average. I always hold on to broken ammonites so that i can use them this way. Takes a bit of work to get them showing, but soooo worth it!

@makokoro9073 3 года назад
Did you know that there is an UV epoxy resin used for crafts and that can be cured in seconds or minutes depending on how big the project is? You just need an UV light lamp. The brand that is sold the most is *Artenzo*

Thank you for spending so much time to make this video I'm just starting to shape my rocks into cabs but I'm not sure if I need to grind them thinner Do you have a weight maximum for the pendants you make?
@TheoKellison
@TheoKellison 3 года назад
You tend to want them on the lighter side just so they aren't tugging against the wearer's neck, but i don't have a maximum . thin is always a safe way to go though! If the cabochon is too tall, the bezel or prongs won't be able to fulling curl over the stone to lock into place. Hope that helps!😄
