Great video, very helpful. I've just got back into mountain biking, since 2007. Treated myself to a 2022 Specialized Enduro. Looking forward to getting out and getting fitter.
I've started putting frame protection on any new bike. Not only does it help keep the frame looking great, it makes cleaning easy. I personally use Ride Wrap, but there are plenty of options available.
@@EMTB17 A good bike shop will sell you a bike that is safe to ride out the door. If this hasn't been your experience, then it's time to find a new shop.
@@gmbn I did it myself. Bought a piece of wrap for 20€, cut it and put it on the bike. Might not look perfect but it did its job and it cost like 1/5 of off-the-shelf kit. I'll take if off before spring and put a fresh one.
I ceramic coat all my bikes and apply frame protection tape where necessary. I always sit it in the front room in front of the telly for at least a week so the whole family can admire its beauty
Definitely do a full bike check of all bolts to ensure they're secure. Nothing more gut wrenching than having your bars turn in your hand because the stem bolts aren't fully tightened!
i should have done this i have just bought a bike recently but i assumed they would have done that i had 6 full day rides on it before wondering why the back brake has play in it turns out the bolts on them were one turn off falling out 😮
I got myself a Rocky Mountain Growler 40 as a Christmas and promotion gift to myself. I've ridden it every single day I've had it so far and I love it!
Got my first ever MTB day before yesterday. I got a big honzo dl on konas half off sale. I've been on one actual ride by myself outside of some piddly riding with the family, and it's definitely me limiting the bike, not the other way round. I love it so far! CHEERS!
Best to keep it within your limits especially if out on your own, when you go outside of them is when you wake up in the back of an ambulance. Push the limits, yes, but only by small amounts at a time.
I just picked up a new Specialized Stumpjumper Evo Elite Alloy and man is it a bad ass bike. Coming from an Orbea Laufey Hardtail going full suspension you can definitely feel the feedback from the trails much smoother. Can't wait to see what this year brings!
I just bought a perfect black 26" MONGOOSE Fireball SS Jirt Jumper. Then I stripped the black Paint off and POLISHED the Alloy Frame to a MIRROR Finish. Now it looks WOW!!
Super Nice! Customizing bikes is fun and a great way to show express yourself. GMBN Tech recently published a video on how to polish components at home.👉 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0C1ZHh3tm6Y.html
@@gmbn It was really easy. All I did to the bare Aluminium Frame was. 1: I RUBBED the bare Aluminium Frame with a SCOTCHBRITE PAD with WD-40 for 1 x HOUR. 2: Then I used AUTOSOL Metal Polish for another 1 x HOUR and PRESTO it was Finished in 2 HOURS. Then I painted the Forks RED... The bloody STICKER KIT for the Bike is $140.00 from America to Australia. So I printed my own MONGOOSE Fireball and RST Dirt Stickers for the Frame and Forks for $55. I bought a new PRINTER and Sticker Vinyl and now I can make other Stickers for the Bike as well.
@@janeblogs324 I lightly Sanded the GLOSS PAINT first... 5 Minute. And I used a CAUSTIC PAINT STRIPPER. 1: I Brushed it on in Sections and Waited for the Reaction. 2: Then I Applied more Paint Stripper to a SCOTCHBRGHT PAD and Rubbed onto the Paint as well. That was Very Effestive. After the FIRST PROCESS was finished then I WASHED the FRAME with Water and Dried it to see where I was at. 3: I REPEATED the Above STEPS again and 99% of the Paint was Removed. 4: I then RUBBED the FRAME hard with A SCOTCHBRITE PAD with lots of WD-40 and that removed the last of the PAINT and completely SMOOTHED the ALUMINIUM ready for the POLISH. 5: USING a MICRO FIBRE CLOTH and AUTOSOL Polish I RUBBED the FRAME fairly hard and FAST. And in a FEW SECONDS you can see the FRAME becoming a MIRROR FINISH. 6: AFTER each Section I used a NEW CLOTH to remove the BLACK POLISH.. I was expecting it to take WEEKS. But it was Finisehed in one Day and it looks ABSOLUTELY UNREAL.
Nice advices 👍 However, I would strongly recommend not to forget burn in period especially for the brakes, because the very first brakings, they will be quite far from full power!
Gifted myself a brand new Vitus Sommet 290 CRS!! Red/Black. First ever Enduro bike! I have done some of the prep work, but still need to do the tubeless setup, mudguard, go over the bolt torque settings, need a helmet, etc. Can't wait to go on my first ride!! Super Stoked!!
Just picked up a Vitus Escarpe 29 AMP! Got it on huge sale before international orders were discontinued from Wiggle. Now i just need to wait until the snow melts here in Minnesota USA. Can't wait!!!
I recently got a Marin Alpine Trail Carbon 2 which was my first carbon mountain bike. Thankfully the local shop suggested frame protection. I never thought about it on my aluminum bikes. Keep that bike looking new!
Collected my new Atherton AM. last June, Checked it out but perfect build quality, cut bars to 760 width and away 😃One thing I wore a correct size Troy Lee helmet but it was never fully comfortable especially on the longer rides; tried a Smiths Forefront 2 at a bike shop in Shrewsbury, very nice fit purchased it and its made my rides so much more enjoyable, no discomfort...game changer...did home spray it to brighten it up & better match my bikes colouring.
I would especially make sure the wheels were tight, stem and seat post bolts were tight, and the pedals weren’t loose. Also remove those reflectors. In the United States they are required for sale. Have the bike shop take them off or remove them yourself.
Just got a Canyon Spectral 29 AL 5 for Christmas. Great bike, but after the first ride, something started knocking and creaking. Not sure what the problem is, as the noise seems to be coming from everywhere, but it does not impacting the riding yet. Awesome vid as usual! 🤙
Might be cable tubes inside the frame, if so not a lot you can do really other than pay a bike shop to try to fix it (they'll know how and if it's possible). Bottom bracket could also need some attention, tightening up perhaps. Also check the recommended torque and use a torque wrench.
Thx for your help guys. I think I located the problem, it seems to be the brakes mostly... They are super loud, and I have to give those a bleed as well. I will check out the cables also, and maybe take it to a shop to get those bearings tight again! :)
@@gmbn Yes, 3 rides, 20+ miles. Things have seriously changed. What happened to 3×7? 26in? Panaracer Smokes? Still remembered my local trails and I'm 10mins from Windhill, if I get the skills back.
For ride one I set levers to about 37 degrees. I also loosen all lever shift bolts slightly till i figure out where they are staying. Even with tools i hate stopping a bunch. Id rather move them by hand at first. I also putt saddle nose down till I figure out where I want it.
A very good point… remember to position the slant of the saddle before your first ride! I forgot to do that when I got my new bike in August and I was painfully reminded of my oversight throughout my 30km ride.
We put them into the living room to make all necessary adjustments, first. A small Bike fit to determine if need anything changed, like stems, spacers, bars etc. I got myself a Marin Bobcat for 60% off and upgraded it with a decent fork for -70%. Bike parts are incredibly cheep rn. I wanted a fun bike with smaller wheel size for weekend trips in addition to my more downhill focused MTB and it does an amazing Job so far.
Tip for drying the bike after washing, a pet or pc blower. It gets all the water off the bike and in-between hard to reach places and saves you a stupid amount of time. Use one for both my push bike and motorbike
my scalps pedals have been on the bike for 12 years and the company didnt use grease, ive tried using a 4ft metal pole and the pedal still wont come loose. safe to say its siezed
+1 on the limit screws. My TranceX2 had not even had the tension screw set at all, and the barrel adjuster was doing the job of one of the limit screws.
After using a spray nozzle hosepipe (never a pressure washer) to wash a bike, use PTFE spray to expel water from the chain and gears, then clean/dry with a microfibre cloth (it will get oily, don't worry about it). Add chain lube after that. These days I just try to avoid the muddy puddles, then most of the time all I need to do when I get home is wipe some mud splatters off the frame with a damp cloth, job done.
Just got my myself a 2024 trek procaliber 8, to get myself back in the game after a few years out. My first dropper post on a bike. One of the cheapest hardtais I could find with boost through axles along with half decent kit.
Don't ride it like your previous bike, takes time to get dialled and set up correctly imo e.g. sag, tokens, tyre pressures etc before you hit the gnar. Take it easy for the first few rides.
Luckily the bike shop i go to they basically take the bike apart and lube everything over again and check all the cables, etc and go for a couple mile ride when the bike comes in. You see employees all the time on the bike path next door. Doesn't make sense as to give someone a bike that has a shop warranty without checking it out first
Get a check list when you're going over the bike too. The most recent bike I bought, I thought I tightened even bit the stem was loose on the fork itself so the first big turn I took the handlebars turned but the fork did not and do I did not turn
had my canyon neuron 6 about a month and apart from riding up and down the road after going tubeless I have resisted as I'm not happy with the db8 brakes (too chunky). bought 203mm hope rotors( and adapters ) but the ring bolts on the rear rotor scrape the massive calliper where it bolts to the frame. going to resolve this by taking the xt brakes off of my Grand Canyon 9 but need to wait for better weather as my garden is my work area. it will be worth the wait I'm sure! once complete I'll bike vault it.
2:27 Not really a new bike, but a new wheelset. I've setup tubeless for the new set, and I found it troublesome to dry inflate. A mechanic recommended to apply the sealant right away, and after a few careful rotations, it inflated! It's true that it may go flat overnight, so I'd recommend to apply more than usual for the first time.
Also with regards to photos. Don't give away any clues on social media where you're from and also it's a good idea to take at least a couple of date and time stamped photos because if the worst happens and some little low life nicks your whip then the insurers may ask for photo evidence that you owned said bike. We unfortunately had to do this last summer when my son's bike was stolen outside of his college
Hey! Nice set of advice. Recently got a new bike but being hesitant to use it during the winter mostly due to clothing. What are you wearing for this video? Keep it up! 🤙🏻
I didn't want to change bike but literally the last day of the year i cracked my 2014 Canyon Strive. Big big bummer, i am really happy in how much use i got out of it (4 years) but it still left this dread feeling... I will sell almost everything off it (it's all pretty new stuff, i kept her up to date) and i'll need a new bike soon

Oops... my first ride was out of the shop and 12 miles home. Went in to get my daughter sized for her 1st grown up bike, ended up buying a Marlin 5 and had no other way of getting it home!
Got my new Emtb yesterday 2023 cube 160 Action team waiting on frame wrap and new pedles coming for it before it goes out, but pure white outside in scotland woth frost and Edinburgh is snowing down there just now, but one thing i do want to know is with the shimano xt disks do they need sanded abit or they good to go as is? Oh and need a helmet that's something never worn before but been years since been on a bike can't believe the difference now to the old Atx ones etc soo different
Pretty poor indictment of manufacturers and retailers. For pre-owned bikes, always give the bike a thorough checkover. That said, as a motorcyclist and a cyclist, I wouldn't throw my leg over two wheels without first checking everything.
Most bikes out of the box come without grease yes, I'd rather have that than a bike tech put way too much grease where it's not necessary, also buy a torque wrench and torque EVERYTHING down, don't trust the factory or bike shops, humans are humans ...
2023 Co-op DRT 1.3. This is REI's house brand but seems to have pretty good components for the price point. Always wanted try out MTBing, did my first solo ride on a local trail to celebrate NYE, enjoyed every minute of it Reply
