Today at Ugly Truck, we're back on the 1986 Chevy C10 and building the EVAP system. We'll use the purge solenoid on the LS intake, so we start by bending steel lines back to both fuel tanks. Next, we add a couple check valves to ensure the tank doesn't build pressure. We don't have room for a carbon canister on this truck, but we talk about the benefits and how to add one if you can.

Timely video, thanks. Just git my 5.3 running in my El Camino and I was overcome with fumes last week. From your video I realized that my purge valve was missing from my intake manifold and I removed the connector from the harness. Today's project was re-pinning the harness and installing the valve. I'm waiting for line to come in so I can plumb everything.

Thanks Jerry. I have plenty of room. It is a SBC 305, mechanical fuel pump, Edelbrock intake manifold and 650 cfm carburetor, original style gas tank that was replaced a few years back. I will try to add a new canister in the stock location to see if that helps.

Hey Jerry, love the videos. You too are life savers. Keep it up. I’m doing my first Ls swap on my 85 c10 and I just installed the fuel system but didn’t do anything with the vent port now I smell gas in garage. So I came across your video. So to make it simple just run a line from the vent port on the sending unit straight over to the evap valve solenoid on the intake?? Also do you have to hook up the connector to the evap solenoid or just the line??😩🤔
@UglyTruckExperience
@UglyTruckExperience 6 месяцев назад
You will need to connect the connector to the solenoid. The solenoid is normally closed, so put a piece of vacuum to it and see if you can suck through it. If you can't, the valve is ok and you will just need to run your vacuum from sending unit to it and plug it in. Jerry

Hi Randy! We used to buy the 25 ft rolls on Amazon, but we've since figured out that it's easier to buy straight sticks from O'Reilly instead of trying to straighten the rolls. A 72" stick of 1/4" is part number PA472. The universal brake lines are hard to look up, so sometimes we just ask to go back and look at what they have. Hope this helps! Thanks for tuning in!

So, I have my evap programmed out and capped. I am using a tanks inc tank and pump with a vent tube / inline roll over valve only. I am getting gas fumes in the garage and am thinking about simply adding a DIY carbon filter canister and use your idea of the in and out check valves. Any plans on a DIY carbon filter using a pvc pipe or anything like that? BTW you missed a couple of clamps LOL
@UglyTruckExperience
@UglyTruckExperience Год назад
I knew someone would call us out for those clamps!!! 🤣 You might be ok with just adding the check valves. The .7 PSI it takes to open the valve in either direction might be enough to keep the vapor in. If not, you could always add a carbon canister from there. We haven't done any DIY canisters, but that's really interesting! Looks like you can get everything you need on Amazon. Let us know how it goes! Thanks for tuning in! --Emily and Jerry

Thanks for the video, Jerry . I am working on undoing most of the stuff the previous owner did on my 79. Still has the 350 but with the EGR and EFE systems deleted. Fuel canister was all disconnected. I’ve spent the day trying to make sure I understand how I want to put it back and play. But I’m a little confused with the ports on the five port canister. Service manual doesn’t help a lot. my plan was to run the vent line from the tank to the canister vent port, obviously, and then, from one of the purge ports, T into the PCV line that runs back to the carburetor. Do I just cap off all the other ports ? Anything I’m missing here?
@UglyTruckExperience
@UglyTruckExperience 5 месяцев назад
Hey Sam. I would just run the line from your tank to the canister and cap the rest of the lines off to start with. If that takes care of your vapor problems, then you are good to go. Tying into the vacuum might just create a headache for you. The original vacuum that went to that canister was metered and timed so it wasn't just a constant supply of manifold vacuum going to the canister. Jerry

Great video man! Im trying to find a way to get the evap to work on my 96 silverado LS swap. I dont really want to add all the extra sensors that the LS harness needs for EVAP. The way I see it, I have 2 options, and I was hoping you could give me some advice. Option one: use only the purge solenoid connector and eliminate the tank pressure sensor and canister vent valve connections from the LS harness, and make a line going from the LS solenoid to the factory charcoal canister. Option two: eliminate all the EVAP electronics from the LS harness, and just have a line going from factory canister to somewhere on the intake tubing before the throttle body, maybe close to the air filter. Do you know if there is any reason why either of these wouldn't work? Thanks!
@UglyTruckExperience
@UglyTruckExperience Месяц назад
Hello Riley. Depending on what your donor ls harness came from or if you are using a aftermarket harness. The only wiring for the evap in the harness is the wiring running to the purge valve solenoid on top of the intake. The wiring that runs down to the tank is in a separate harness that runs down the side of the frame. You can run a evap line to that solenoid and everything will work fine, even if you have had the evap removed from the ECM it will still function like normal. If you live in a warmer climate, I would go with the purge solenoid. If not, I would just vent it at the tank. Go the simplest route and if you end up smelling fuel you could go a different direction if needed. Thanks. Sorry for the late response. Jerry

Omg!!!! This one us great guys. I am doing the Ls3 03' Criwn Vic swap. And I was wondering about kinda getting a evap working just because. I just dropped the block and crank and rods off at the machine shop on Tuesday. I can't wait. Question????? If I take that Gen 4 block and drop in a 24x crank and 1x cam sprocket and run a Gen3 harness and Puter. Will it still function really well?. I don't want to fight with all the extra with the Gen 4 harness. Except if I decide to run a 6L80 then I'll have to stay Gen 4. I love the content guys. I always wait for the next one to drop.

Great video again. I have an 81 g body that had the emission removed years ago small block 305, but I have gas smell n the garage. I have the vent line in the front still just open. What would you recommended I do to keep the smell down? It’s a “Antique Vehicle” so no emissions are required. I also have my C10 that I’m working that will have the same issue? Can I get a canister and just plug in the fuel tank line? Do I need to plug the other lines? Should i run a line back to a 2 barbed PCV valve on the valve cover? Does a need an inlet line open? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciate. Thanks!

Hello Benjamin. If you have room for a canister somewhere, I would try adding that to your fuel tank vapor line and see if that takes care of it. It will help I am sure, but if it does not do enough you may want to tie it into your vacuum system somehow. Depending on what you have for a fuel system. Let me know what you do and how it goes. Thanks. Jerry

Starting a new thread. Lol. In doing the Ls3/4L80 swap in my 03' Crown vic. Is the a converter to get the original Ford speedo to work with the Chevy speed sensor. They are both digital or what not. They are not cable lol. Even if I have to have it recalibrate. I have the schematics so I can run the original gauges and the original check engine light on the dash. Oil,temp, charging fuel. No tach in the dash. I'll run a column mounted one. The only thing is the speedo. I know there are GPS speeds but if I can I'd like it to look stock. (SLEEPER) LOL.

Hello Hugh. I would send a message to a programmer and see if they are able to change the vss signal going out. I know they are able to change it for the incoming signal. Otherwise you might have to go with a GPS signal generator. That is a interesting swap. Let us know how it's going. Thanks. Jerry

So figure I will do it and show right down to the wires to use my original gauges and even the check engine light in the dash. I'm also doing the videos for my grand sons. That way they can do this too if they ever choose to. Thank you Jerry and Emily for your videos and help. By the way, I am going to be using your a/c module to do my a/c for the swap. Without the canister in place, the only way I can see for air to enter the tank to replace fuel as it’s pumped out is through the check valve at the filler pipe? If not, where does air enter the tank? Thank you.

Hello Jim. That is right. If you didn't have a vented fuel filler cap, the only way for the pressure in the tank to be even would be through the check valve. Jerry

I didn’t think the pcm commanded the purge solenoid to open unless the pressure switch on the canister was made? Otherwise would be a constant lean condition. Without all of the evap hardware I don’t think this will work as is. On my OBD1 gen 2 LT2 swaps I only had the vent line from the tank to the charcoal canister and then to the evap solenoid, there was no other hardware and the vent line on the canister stayed open to fresh air. I believe the evap solenoid was opened based on engine load, but obd2 has more hardware involved. Have you verified that the evap solenoid is being commanded open at idle with only a vent line feeding it and no pcm inputs?
@UglyTruckExperience
@UglyTruckExperience Год назад
The way you described how you have done it is basically the same system. On this one I did not add the canister but it does work nicely how you describe it. The ECM opens and closes the purge valve very quickly on idle creating just the smallest vacuum leak. The ECM overcomes it by adding what fuel it needs to. When the valve gets stuck open, it does create a lean code. I am not sure if they open in a no load situation like decelerating but they click away on idle. Carburetors did the same thing with timed vacuum ports. Thanks for your comment. I hope my response makes sense. Jerry

@@UglyTruckExperience understood, I had never heard that the obd2 pcm would turn on the evap solenoid without knowing fuel level or tank pressure. If it does that is great because I prefer to keep evap on my builds. Thanks for the reply!

@UglyTruckExperience
@UglyTruckExperience 19 дней назад
Yes, The vent line from the tank goes directly to the purge control valve and also to the carbon canister if you are using one. If you are not using a canister you would need to use a vented fuel cap or install some check valves in order to keep from building pressure in the tank. Jerry
