Goto, Siopao Asado & Suman sa Ibos 🇵🇭 | Trying Filipino Food in Jersey City

I went to Jersey City, NJ to try Filipino Food. I tried goto for the first time. Goto is a Filipino rice porridge that has pork stomach (tripe), innards and sliced eggs. See my reaction as I try goto along with suman sa ibos for dessert. Jersey city has some of the best Filipino food around Manhattan and this does not disappoint. I also tried pork siopao (Filipino buns) and ube pandesal (purple yam bread) which were delicious! I enjoy the food of the Philippines and the great communities the search for it takes me to.
Episode Intel:
Casa Victoria
691 Newark Ave, Jersey City, NJ 07306
Reggie Ate: Pork siopa, suman sa Ibos, ube pandesal (purple yam bread)
Little Quiapo
530 Newark Ave C, Jersey City, NJ 07306
Reggie Ate: Goto (Filipino congee with tripe and chicharon)

As a Filipino myself, I appreciate you for trying our cuisines and desserts and I hope you liked them, brother. If you want to learn more how to cook them on your own, you can try to search some types of dishes that we have and search them here on YT. There are various Filipino cooking channels that you might also want to subscribe for you to be updated. Hope all is well!

@BeerusTv Agreed on this. I only just watch some tutorials in YT and after that, I usually tweak it using my own recipe or top it up with some additional spices that suites so in that way, the food can be more flavorful.

Suman sa Ibos (the palm wrapping) is best dipped in muscovado or brown sugar or better yet, pair it with ripe sweet mango. Oh and coffee on the side.

@unculturedtravel 2 года назад
Wow that sounds delicious! What region of the Philippines has the best coffee?
@lucci17
@lucci17 2 года назад
@@unculturedtravel Phils is one of the few countries that produce the 4 main coffee varieties of Arabica, Liberica, Excelsa and Robusta, altho 90% of coffee produced is Robusta. Arabica is mainly grown in the highlands of Luzon and cooler parts of Mindanao while Robusta thrives in the warmer lowlands. IMO, the single origin Sagada Arabica with its clean and fruity taste is the best coffee locally.

Suman is usually wrapped in a coconut leaf and you are right that it should be dipped in something sweet like sugar. Here in the Philippines we usually eat it with ripe mangoes, or in my province a local chocolate drink we called tablea

8:45 suman sa ibus is made out of sticky rice or glutinous rice cooked in coconut milk halfway then wrap it in coconut leaf then steamed, there's various way of eating it since it doesn't have added sweetener...commonly dip in sugar, you can dip it in coconut jam (we call it matamis na bao) or you can have it with sweet ripped manggo...in the southern part of the Philippines they eat it with what they call sikwate or hot think chocolate drink...9:45 its a filipino version of congee...we have two type of congee we have what we call arozcaldo and goto...arozcaldo is made with chicken while goto is made with pork intestine or tripe we eat it anytime of the day can be your normal meal such breakfast, lunch or dinner or have it as snack...

Siopao is eaten with sauce specific to siopao. It is a thick, sweet soy-based sauce almost similar taste to teriyaki sauce. siopao is also eaten piping hot. What you've eaten is baked siopao that's breaded. The more popular type is the steamed one wrapped in a bao bun. If you buy it again, ask for the siopao sauce. for goto, you put a few drops of fish sauce to add saltiness and unique umami flavor. It is calamansi that's normally used. Lemon has a totally different taste profile but I think calamansi is not readily available there. Calamansi is always the lime used for filipino dishes and is several times more flavorful than lemon or lime. Lemon/lime is just a substitute in absence of calamansi.

Suman sa ibus is plain, I prefer it pan fried in butter dusted with just a bit of sugar and paired with slices of sweet mango. If I'm indulgent, I top everything with vanilla ice cream with the suman sa ibus hidden under the mangoes and vanilla ice cream. In some upscale restaurants here in the Philippines (Fely J's, Bistro Remedios restaurants), this dessert is called "Sikreto ni Maria" (Maria's Secret) with the suman sa ibus as the "secret" or surprise at the bottom of the vanilla ice cream. Since I follow a low carb diet, I now rarely eat dessert.

The better way to cook tocino/longanisa is by pouring it half cup of water on medium heat and let it boil until dry, pour some oil to fry it slightly. That ensures it's fully cooked and tender. If you want to lessen the sweetness, use a cup of water instead and let boil for 4-5 minutes and drain the water then lightly fry on little oil. The taste will be light.

that particular variety of suman is usually dipped in muscuvado for flavor, or at least in sugar.

If you have a plain bun, monay, or pan de sal, you can dip it in your coffee. Try asking for Kapeng Barako (Batangas-style coffee). It's very flavorful so it adds good flavor to an bread. Filipino saying: "Walang matigas na tinapay sa mainit na kape." It means that the hardest bread cannot stay hard in hot coffee. It also applies to solving a tough problem with an appropriate solution.

You dip the ruman in red sugar, if you can find it, which makes it extra tasty. anyhow, love your comments on Filipino food!

Yes, that kind of suman you ate, would normally be dipped in sugar. Some suman however, particularly the green ones, are already sweet.
