"so when you're putting everything together for your admissions application -- your portfolio, your essays, your recommendations, you know all of those things -- you want to have a story." LOVE. Thank you, Morgan!
Thanks so much for this video! I'm in the midst of refining my HCI application, and the reminder to focus on my story and cohesion really helped. Happy new year!
I'm applying for this program in Fall now, and all your videos have been so incredibly helpful and inspiring! The process has been very stressful but somehow you make me feel more confident in my abilities and the possibilities. Thank you for sharing!!!
Oh wow! How kind of you to say!! I am so glad the videos have helped!! You should be confident because you can do this! The world is wide open for you. Good luck on your journey 😊
Hi Morgan! Thank you so much for doing this video! I've been looking into this program and I'm ready to apply for next fall. I just want to know how you planned out your time while preparing the application process. Like how is the timeline looking? Love love your video! so helpful!
Hey! I found out about the program pretty late.. around December. So, I spent all of January preparing. Every day after work And all weekend for the month of January I got my admissions stuff together. I lost a lot of sleep lol I would say it’d be better to start now and do a little bit each week
Thanks so much Morgan, this was so helpful for someone who has just decided they want to go to grad school and really have no idea what they're doing in the app process!! Do you have any advice for people like me who are just coming out of college who don't have a particular "focus"? I've tried a lot of different things (which after lots of trial and error have led me to deciding that HCI is right for me), but I'm not totally sure how I can craft all of that into a story!
Hey!! You are welcome and good luck with your app! Yes! I would say take some time and think about the area of HCI that interests you.. research, design, engineering, PM, writing, etc. Then think about the industry.. healthcare, education, defense, etc etc. Once you know that I’d craft my story from that place. Typically if it interests you.. you probably have some type of experience with it at some point.
Hello Morgan, thank you so much! I am a public school teacher going to apply for HCI master. I am stressed out now about my admission projects would be a hot mess since deadline is approaching. After seeing your video, I am a lot more relaxed now and just trying my best.
Hi! Thank you so much for making this video; it was super informative and encouraging, and I've been able to apply your suggestions throughout my application process! Just a quick question--I'm trying to create my portfolio, but I have minimal relevant work experience, so I decided to just include a personal design project that I attempted from scratch. How would you recommend achieving the user testing portion of the design process? Did you include user testing in your portfolio when you initially submitted your app? Thanks so much!!
Hey! You are welcome and I’m so glad it helped!! I think one project had veryyy minimal user testing that I did with teachers. The others did not. That seemed to be okay! They don’t expect you to know the full UX process before starting school.
Hi Morgan! I am also applying for HCI program in Fall! The words can't describe how I feel appreciative of your helpful videos. I have a question regarding HCI application though. Since you came from different background, how did you deal with Publication, Awards, and all other extra miles? I am very concerned that I don't have related (or even non-related) rewards, publications, and extra document sections. did you do any Moocs or boot camps? I noticed that GRE is optional now. Have you submitted your GRE? seems like GRE increased the chance of getting in. Thank you for sharing
Hey! I didn’t have any of those things and it did not make a difference at all! We had to have a GRE when I applied. So they did look at it. Last year GRE was not needed and they did not even look at the scores. It may not help this year either.
Hey Morgan! Thanks for making this video, it's super helpful. I've been looking into the MS-HCI program at Georgia Tech and I was wondering which track would be most suitable for someone applying with an architecture background?
Hey! Thank you so much for your sharing. There are very useful. I was an elementary school teachers too! I have two questions: 1. how many words did you write in personal statement? 2.How many recommendations letters do I need? I think maybe I can only have two letters, how can I do?
Oh that’s so cool!! You are welcome! 1. I think I was right under the maximum amount of words lol 2. I am not sure how many you need but I only had two
Hello Morgan! Sorry about the late question. I am applying for MHCI in the 23 cycle and a bit unsure about some things on requesting recommendation letters. For context, I am coming directly from undergrad (psych) and now have three professors willing to write rec letters for me, but am a bit unsure about what kind of information I should send to them to make it easy to read while not overwhelming them at the same time. Is an google sheet document with all the programs I plan to apply to a good way to deliver this information? I’m also thinking about providing some brief information about each program + why I chose this program, but felt that makes it too many words for the excel UI and can be overwhelming.... On the other hand, I also worry word documents can be hard to read and specific deadlines of each school can be missed more easily. Might there be a recommended way you may have on the ways to deliver your relevant information to rec letter writers? Thank you sincerely in advance and sorry about potentially bothering with the long question!
Hey! No need to apologize! I don’t think the format matters so much (doc/sheet). I would use a table format to list schools, letter requirements, and why you chose the school. I would also provide your accomplishments and any relevant experience you have. Due date for all letter should be bolded at the top. That way they can pull from all that to write your letter!
Hey Morgan! I have a question about the portfolio regarding the HCI program. You mentioned that you redesigned google drive for kids, which is related to technology. I am an architect. Should my portfolio include technology related designs or can it be my common architectural portfolio of designs that I have done?
Hey! It can definitely be your architecture portfolio! That is your story and what you are an expert in! Honestly, it's pretty open and we have many former architects in the program who used their architecture portfolio. Many of them are in the Industrial Design track. Good luck 🤗
Hi I'll be completing my engineering in computer science in the year 2022 , can u please tell me if it will be better if I take up ms in computer science with a specialization in HCI.
Hi! Unfortunately I can not answer that question for you. You have to do what you feel is right for you! It largely depends on your future career goals and what you want to do in the future.
Hey Morgan ! About the HCI program do you know anyone that is in the Psychology specialization that made a portfolio? I am a psych major and I have done cognitive research in rodents and also some coding with video game design and I wanted to know if it would benefit me by making one with the video game design work?
Hey! I’m honestly not entirely sure. However, it sounds like a good idea! I don’t think it’d hurt! Everyone needs a portfolio once they get into the program.
No problem! I won’t give an exact number but starting out you can make anywhere from $90,000 - $120,000. Usually the exact number is determined by the cost of living where you are and if it’s a company that’s known to pay more.
