The Nashville establishment hasn't gotten over it. That incident, pot leaf Nudie jacket, Gram being Gram. He's Not in the Country Music H.O.F. Emmylou put the guitar he gave her in her display.

I admire him for bucking the system and playing this at the Opry... I worked very hard of the Blues and Country, and I did it so well. Patrons at the many bars I played, wanted common covers. I'd tell them that that music was too hard, and get back to my tunes. I'm an artist, not a human jukebox... Yeah, a few places didn't hire me back, but others did, appreciative of my song choices and skills. I'm old and crabby now... and still play the obscure gems I dig up. I should learn this tune...

"Hickory Wind" is a beautiful song and perhaps Gram's finest and most enduring composition. His recording of this song with the Byrds is great, but his duet with Emmylou helps take the song to new heights.

Gram had an appreciation, love, and reverence for traditional country music that far out weighs what is shown by the current Nashville music establishment. They are too busy trying to sound popish to gain listeners. This cycle has happened before. History doesn't repeat itself but it does often rhyme.

Gram doesn’t get the credit he deserves for his contributions to music. He,through his friendship with Keith Richards, influenced The Rolling Stone’s, and you have already talked of his importance in Emmylou music. While Waylon Willie and the other “outlaw” artists were pushing country towards the freedom of rock music Gram was taking folk rock closer to country

in the late 1960's and early 1970's I hung out a lot at The Palomino Club in North Hollywood especially when Gram, Emmy and the Burrito Brothers were playing. I was so honored to hang with Gram back stage once. Damn, what a historic time to live in. I once dated one of the female waitresses there. Hooking up with Del Shannon and Brian Hyland there was a mind blower. "HICKORY WIND" what a memory blast! ❤❤❤❤❤

I was a Sophomore in college the year Gram passed, and I discovered him, the Byrds, the FBBs, and Emmylou around that time but after his passing. Their duets saved my soul more times than I can count and I still miss him for how his music positively affected my life. Gram's and Emmylou's relationship was always so intriguing to me. I felt she must have tried to save him but in the end she could not overcome his addictions. And I'm sure there was at least a great fondness for one another if not love. There had to be - you can just hear it in their singing together. His music was life changing for her, for me, and countless other fans.

I saw Gram and Emmylou at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia in June of 1973. I couldn’t get any of my friends to go to listen to ‘that country shit’ as they called it. By September of that year, Gram died at Joshua Tree desert. Forty years later, my friends now loving that country shit asked me why I didn’t force them to go. I was pretty persuasive in those days, but I opted to go by myself.

I had heard that it was contract issues which made them take off Parson's voice. He was apparently still under contract to a different record company than the Byrds. Now I'm not sayin' he didn't piss off Roger McGuinn, but I think McGuinn respected Parsons enough that he wouldn't just take off his vocals out of spite. It was a very complicated relationship due to Parsons' addictions.

I have been listening to the Byrds this week, even more so since the announcement of David Crosby’s death yesterday. Included in my listening was the Sweet Heart of the Radio album. Parsons joining the Byrds significantly influenced the Byrds move toward country-rock from its origins as a rock band. I find Parsons, including Emmylou Harris, more suited for Americana-Roots genre than Country music. It’s the blending of folk-bluegrass- rock, without the slick Nashville sound - and this is especially true of ‘70’s Country music. I first saw Emmylou in concert in the mid-70’s soon after she formed her HotBand. She opened for Willie Nelson and Ricky Skaggs was played guitar-fiddle-and mandolin. Emmylou always had the best musicians in her bands, including Sam Bush (formerly of the progressive bluegrass band New Grass Revival) and Rodney Crowell. These singer/songwriter musicians transcend genres. And like Emmylou, these days, are rarely, if ever heard, on country music stations.

I said he had it backwards. Most all contemporary Country bands depend on an aggressive electric guitar.
