Gary Clark Jr. is still clearly uncomfortable being heralded as one of the best guitarists in a generation. He's played the White House, and toured with the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. This year his blues/rock album, "This Land," won three Grammy Awards. Kristine Johnson talks with the musician who describes himself as a "simple dude from Austin, Texas who picked up a guitar." I love Austin!! I am from Europe and have only been there one time. But when i was there i felt like home, friendly people all over the place. Not surprised that Gary is from that city, I totally get why you are proud of him.

Oh my, how down to earth this man is. Am old school, what is called vinyl today 😖 ( it’s a record) have been listening to Gary for 6 years now. He is his own musician, however there are times Jimi is playing thru him. Lovely parents too.

My husband introduced me to Gary Clark Jr. (side note... Virgina Grohl does a segment on him in her book “From Cradle To Stage” Stories from the Mothers who rocked and raised rock stars” book. We saw him open for Eric Clapton in LA. WOW! What an amazing artist and human being! We LOVE him and hope to see him again before too long! Luv U Gary Clark Jr.! You are an amazing guitarist, vocalist and all-around musician! Looking forward to seeing you again!!! Oh... as the Headliner!!!!! ❤️

WOW! Like others I am just running across him for the first time. My first thought after his first rif was, "that looks like Jimi". I completely agree with Clapton, he for sure has the flow. And what parents! THAT is a great example of what great parents look like. Congratulations Gary on your success as what appears to be a well balanced, cool person. I will start buying your music as well.

He's awesome, he has style and seems like a really cool dude, but comparing him to Hendrix is exaggerating. Typical thing journalists like to say to get more attention. From a technical standpoint, I think what John Mayer does with the guitar, for example, is far more innovative, in my humble opinion. There's a video of them playing together where that gets really clear. (No intention to offend or discredit his work in any way, I actually listen to him regularly)

I would like to say too that King Zapp in the band doesn't get enough credit too! Both guitarists blend so well together and even Zapp takes over some solos much better sometimes! When me and my wife watched them 2 years ago, I was just so shocked and blown away by Zapp's playing.. Gary was the man as well, but Zapp stole the show in my honest opinion... Kept watching his riff/ solo playing and trying to see what he was using on his pedalboard/ amp setup.

I remember watching an interview where he said a white lady neighbor taught him how to play guitar. I think they even play together in the interview. But here mom says he was completely self thought. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The masses love to throw Hendrix’ name around the latest great or even good player. Love GCJ’s stuff but it’s a well traveled road he rides. Jimi plowed through the forest to come up with his craft. He says himself”I’m not special”. He is but not enough to be called the best. EVH he isn’t.

Great player, seen him live and he captivates the crowd. Loved it since he broke his EP. But as a player for 35 years there are many who eclipse him technically (Randy Rhoads) melodically (David Gilmour) and just natural talent (Blackmore). Clarke just doesn’t have any competition these days. Put him into 1970 and he’s a face in the crowd. Did I mention there are much better thieves than him?(Page) Best in the 20teens I’ll give to him. Not in the same universe as Hendrix. Sorry.
