Michael Chapdelaine plays Granada by Albeniz. He says in his concerts that he wakes up sometimes in panic that "i'm not a classical guitarist anymore" and records some standard work to confirm or dispel.
Spellbinding. I tried to listen to it "in the background" while working and couldn't. And kudos for the bare feet and natural but unorthodox hold! The man is in symbiosis with his guitar.
I guess forums like this invite commentary from "experts" who enhance their self esteem by waxing ignorant on "shortcomings" in such rare talent. That Michael has developed from that college-aged "Master Class Student guitarist" into a University music Professor, master guitarist & songwriter, yet remains accessible for small venues of "regular folks" around the country is testimony to his true artistic spirit. That he chooses to perform as his heart leads him, even barefoot, is art - not flaw
@Itheprosperone I agree. I wouldn't call them a snob, but they have to get used to his philosophy that music is music. It's an aquired taste that many people don't share in this time period. It's very Baroque-ish haha. I will only say this for Michael Chapdelaine though because he can really pull that stuff off.
Interpretation is always subjective...He hurries up through the second part which is meant to be " meno mosso", but on the whole this is a very good, musical performance..
I've heard this song by otherr artists and this one doesnt have as much feeling and interpretation. I think being kicked out of a master class by Segovia really affected this man.
@inglesdeconversacion I totally agree mate. Segovia did a great deal to bring classical guitar to popularity, and there's no doubt he was a great player. However, to be honest I've saw alot of better players here on youtube. This performance is fantastic in the way it's delivered - lots of feeling, and played by a down-to-earth guy that just loves to play guitar just like the majoriy of us. Personally I prefer MC to segovia any day.
I completely agree with you piba, but I think that we must remember that there are many transcriptions of this piece, personally I will always prefer, as you do, the Segovia´s one, but still, the melody remains the same and the capacities of each guitarrist varies, for example, personally I dont like Amaros transcritpions and I dont like his playing also, but that doesnt necessarily means that he is not a good guitarist. ;)
Personally I get really pixxed off with the idiots on here who knock and snear at this great great player. His technique, soul and emotional content lack nothing atall to myears and I ve seen and heard them all. It is however ,very nice to see that by far the majority of people DO see his talent instantly and are not part of the petty 'guitarist knocker brigade'. There s one or two for every excellent player up here with a snobby putdown, and I bet anythging they all play absolutely crap!!
