Thank you very much for posting this video! My wife and I just did this install on our 2020 Grand Cherokee and your guidance helped us save tons of time!
my vehicle is not tow ready, so it does not even have the tow plug hanging in the back. however, I am going to put an aftermarket harness which I've seen many videos of on RU-vid. I did find the aftermarket harness on Amazon. I have heard that you must get the vehicle flashed in order to get the tow harness to work, if your vehicle is tow ready that is (meaning your vehicle has the tow plug in the back). mine isn't.
Thank you so much for this brilliant solution to the hitch install process. Your method is simple and removes a lot of the risk for damaging the bumper. I think I will give this a try.
I tried this on my 2015 Limited - it was going great until I realized the bumper was wider than the opening in the upper bumper cover with the lower part removed (!!!!) To get around this I grabbed my grinder with a cutting wheel and my sawsall with a metal cutting blade and cut the ends of the bumper off to make it short enough to come out. After that it all went together well. The hitch assembly itself is short enough to go in. Also, the MOPAR OEM kit provides 8 new bolts that are notably longer and seemingly stronger than the stock bolts.
Great video! Could not stand to look at an after market hitch. I am going to do this thanks to your video. Can you please advise where your purchased the hitch kit from and did it include the black plastic hitch surround? Thanks again for all of the information.
I actually used a simple utility knife. Make sure it is sharp. When you remove the lower bumper you will see the outline, of the insert, that indicates where to cut. It really was pretty straight forward. Go to 5:30 on the video in this reply below. It should help. Not my video but should help. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xOGe_s_onbk.html
I haven't towed anything. But being that it's a factory tow hitch install, it should be the same as a jeep GC that came with factory tow. Google that and it should be your answer. This is my opinion.
Thanks for the great video. Definitely easier than taking off the whole bumper but, WARNING!!! I have a 2013 and the original bumper is longer than on this model. My bumper is long enough that it goes under the upper bumper. If you stop video at 10:00 minutes, my bumper extends about another 8" so it is under the upper bumper. I will have to take off the upper bumper. 😞 Thanks for making the video though.
Honestly, I just made sure everything was really right. The bolts underneath are pretty big I just tightened them a little harder than I would for the wheels' lug nuts.
I'm going to install this harness. Great video, I've been wanting to do it for a while just couldn't figure out whether to take the whole umper off or just the lower fascia. What's the torque requirement for fastening the bolts for the hitch?
Actually putting the clips back in was the easiest part. The ones behind the heat shield were a bit of a pain, but aside from that, pretty simple and the clips went right in.
I bought the whole kit on Amazon here: BOERLKY Replacements Compatible with Trailer Hitch Receiver Bezel GNT56214936 a.co/d/hGawfVZ But I think this is the link for the trim by itself.
