As one of the ex-head writers for DMA, this wasn't exactly our top concern, but we had a laugh that was quite enjoyable and memorable.

in vice city stories you completely skipped over umberto! including his receptionist that explicitly says shes lesbian.

I didn't like Bernie. He was supposed to have a similar background to Nico, so you'd expect he has seen shit. Instead he was just a "damsel" in distress just to be saved by Nico. When his lovely boat ride is ruined by men with guns, I'd expect him to help Nico instead of being a burden. Juxtaposition of over the top flamboyance and ability to handle himself during an armed conflict would make him such an interesting character. Such a wasted potential.

Gay man here, 31 years old and my first GTA experience was Vice City. I thought the stereotypes of LGBT folks in the games were genius. I genuinely enjoyed them and thought it was hilarious! Never was offended and will never be. My favorite LGBT character is Elizabeta Torres and my least favorite is Evan, he is the embodiment of toxic gay male living in NYC.

In deleted lines from GTA 4 Elizabeta calls from prison and says she loves it, has a hot girlfriend and is running things inside

I always thought the psycho from Vice City being dressed as a woman was meant to be a joke on Love Fist being so drunk/high/stupid that they wouldn't be able to see through a very bad disguise. Anyways, I'm about halfway through and right now it sounds to me like you're confusing "a good depiction" of a queer person with "a depiction of a good queer person" - as if they couldn't be just as hypocritical, selfish, opportunistic or outright evil as any other person you meet on the streets. Most people in this franchise are at least somewhat negative.

Congratulations on coming out. That is already such a hard thing to do but I can’t imagine how much harder it would be while having a niche following, especially with an audience that would usually not be so opening. I wish you the best!

Transwoman here, I've found the Gta series around the same time I first realized I was trans and while some of the depictions have been bad there's been some interesting LGBT characters in the series and tbh I am curious to see how they continue this topic in their next games. Also congrats for finding out who you are ^ ^

GTA does it right. Don’t give narcissistic neediness to groups who think they need a spotlight on them. Some people are gay. Some are straight. Who cares. Are you a good person or bad person? That’s all that matters.

RE: The United Liberty Paper Contact's reference to the FIB, that's derived from a *LOT* of speculation that J. Edgar Hoover, the first (and longest-serving) Director of the FBI, was some flavor of queer. Because the Bureau became kind of a cult of personality around him during his tenure, that speculation became kind of a harmful generalization around it.

In liberty city stories there is a song on the radio called love is the feeling and it has lesbian undertones, also in vice city stories it is implied that Reni and Diego Mendez had a sexual encounter

My opinion? All completely fine. It's a game that pokes fun at EVERYBODY, not like they singled out 1 group. That's why I always liked R*, nobody is off limits and that's how it should be, making protected classes is extremely problematic for obvious reasons. Imo if you're going to play an old R* game, there's a chance you'll be offended and if you can't handle it, probably a sign that their games aren't for you and that's fine.

40-something queer checking in. You are spot on saying that the games are a distillation of the zeitgeist of their time of release, and you can see that evolution in as short a time as Reni to Bernie to Tony. And GTA in particular takes the piss with EVERYONE. The right gets it as hard as the left, so I don't really get bothered by the portrayals, it's part of the experience of the satirical universe.

It is really interesting to see how the media handled this stuff at the time. Each game is a little capsule of the time. A "time capsule" if you will

As gay man who played this games since I was 8, I never really found harmful this games, sure there are slurs, bad jokes and bad taste stereotypes, but this series specially since VC has clearly tried to make fun of American society, almost every character in this games are a stereotype of their archetype and a piece of trash. Things like OGLoc being gay I find it more close to making fun of gangsters rappers who think they're are so tough but are actually insecure, so much that they will deny their idententy because of the opinion of other people rather than themselves. It would be hypocritical to have a queer character that is a good person, like hell for me the best representation and my favorite is Trevor and he is a psycho. Obviously this jokes can harm after all this fandom is very homophobic, for example there's a lot of mods who just delete the gay flags of San Fierro, and I don't like that, but like I said I things is more fault of the fandom rather than the developers, if they decided to just make one group of people into the good ones in this world where everyone is trash, it would just end up like Saints Row Reboot. There's joke that I don't like obviously like the CW crossdresser, I think is less funny and more hurtful with the dialogue about his dad. But there are also ones who I don't really care because of how crazy they're like the white supr* gay bikers (which I think is making fun more of bikers rather than other thing, there's rumors of both of those things being common in biker circles) And to be fair a lot when right under my nose, like yes my first non gender conforming character was Remi, but at my age of 11 when I first played VCS, I just saw them as a weird guy with that makeup and at the end of their missions I ended up liking their eccentric personality rather than focusing on his fourth gender change. At the end of the day I don't care about this jokes and to be fair I like it more, mainly because as a Hispanic guy I take this more as just other jab at American society and its consumerism and false facade, rather than making fun at a group of specific people, is just one of those things you gotta add if you want to make fun of a society, you have to criticize it from every angle, so there shouldn't be any exceptions

30:18 idk why but Brucie being gay never crossed my mind i always thought he was a fat kid who grew up insecure due to a cruel bully of an older brother (Mori) and the fact “hot” women never payed him any attention…. So once he had enough money he was able to afford to change his lifestyle thinking that getting with superficial “hot” girls, driving sports cars, drinking expensive champagne at nightclubs etc, would give him satisfaction and of course being insecure had to take steroids to keep up this facade without putting in the proper work. That in turn resulted in roid rage which caused him to have Niko kill people on his behalf, even mentioning that the “red mist”(roid rage) got to him Niko said he “would be his friend but is done killing people for him” because it’s not right. I always interpreted the overintimacy with Luis in the club to be Brucie being wasted, like one of those things you tell him about the next morning and he’s like what no way! But definitely a sign of latent homosexual tendencies.

Here's a prime example of why you shouldn't be offended by GTAs representation of gay people. I just replayed Vice City, I'm Australian, there is large radio advert that has an Aussie man clearly talking about having sex with animals (terrible right, lots of innuendos) I can't believe they could represent every Australian as an animal molester. Oh wait, they didn't. They took an Australian stereotype(australians being good with animals - Steve Irwin) and made fun of it and our accent. Do I find it offensive? Of course not, that's what satire is!

haven't watched the full video yet but I'm hoping you touch on the amount of times they reference "tr*nnies" in the 3D era games. the recurring jokes always stuck out to me, even when I was a kid and didn't even know what trans people even were lol. i never really thought about it until i was doing a 100% run on GTA:LCS, so many jokes in that one, not to mention whatever was going on with reni on Flashback FM. the 2000s were weird tbh. you're definitely right about the games being a product of their time, honestly the games are still some of my favorite of all time though (also hey, queer GTA fan, subscribed!!)

When it comes to the representation thing in GTA and everything good, neutral and (potentially, quite possibly) bad I just don’t think too much about it. I know when it’s done properly and good, know when it’s meant to be seen as parodies and for laughs and when it’s possible done in bad taste due to the times. I found a lot of them funny and laugh at the ridiculousness.

I think it's good to be able to laugh at yourself from time to time. Rockstar takes no prisoners. They make fun of hillbillies, politicians (D and R), celebrities, hippies, young people, old people, cops, government agencies, gun nuts, religions, atheists, and probably a ton more that I'm forgetting. The only line that Rockstar refuses to cross is any line that would get them pulled from shelves.

Idk what's considered transphobic anymore, but that Rapodite commercial was outta poket 😂 ("go from Brad to Brenda in a jif") it's STILL in San Andreas to this day! I'm trans myself, but I think it's all light hearted. Their whole image is "making fun of American culture" and LGBTQ+ representation is a big part of that.

The GTA fandom must be one of the most conservative fandoms out there. You can see it for the amount of dislikes this video has.

I hope we get more positive queer references in GTA 6, I mean it would be fun to get a drag race parody reference on ingame tv. Honestly if Trevor had grown up in a better environment he could be a good representation of a rural queer

I think the White Stallion bar in VCS might have been inspired directly (or indirectly via the fashion that followed) by Kenneth Anger's short film Scorpio Rising from 1963. The film depicts gay sadomasochistic nazi bikers. I'm no expert but I believe it was around for the start of the leathermen scene which people might today only recognise from the village people. It could also simply be a play on the White Horse Inn one of the oldest gay bars in California.

Y'know, I'll also take you up on sharin' me GTA perspectives as a non-binary being and very lifelong GTA player. At the start things went over my head, I was young. Now, I can see certain things and shake me head. That goes for a lot of things in the series, actually. I mean, GTA 1 has El Burro and the level right before him is just a massive pile of Chinese stereotypes. But GTA 1 was a very edgy 90s game, intentionally so, they intentionally stoked the fires of controversy to advertise the game. I mean, in 1 you kill the First Lady by bombing a hospital AND assassinate the President of the United States! It's ridiculous. A lot of GTA is. But, over the years, GTA has matured from that in many ways. The same franchise that did that later made the mission That Someone Special. And that maturity is reflected in the way it treats people. I don't think they're gonna lose that edge, not fully. It is kinda baked into the franchise on a DNA-level, but, at the very least, it'll be better than it was. Also, I hate t' tell ya this, but in GTA San Andreas and Vice City there's 3 Ped-types that're... really not great depictions of trans women (that I know of). Reading on is really not for the faint of heart when it comes to transphobia. The Vice City ped has a line of dialogue that's one of those classic shitty trans jokes. The black prostitute model has one of those 'I used to be a man' lines (I think the exact phrasing is 'My name's Pearl [voice changes to masculine], but I used to be Brian'). And in San Andreas there's two, I'll start with the ped wfystew, who's notation at least genders her correctly (white female young stewardess). Her dialogue is a bunch of 'flamboyant gay' dialogue with references to transness some choice lines include: 'Holy hormones!', 'Leapin' estrogen', 'Get out of my way I'm post-op.', 'Ah I'm too female to die!' and 'Had my operation during refueling.' (I do wish I was making a tasteless joke, but I'm very serious). The other is a... homeless drunken trans woman in San Fierro. Her internal name is 'swmotr1' which itself is transphobic as that mean 'street white male old tramp 1'. Her appearance is... certainly an appearance for a trans woman modeled by the people who wrote that first character and her dialogue is mostly drunken nonsense, but a few times she self-identifies as 'an old man' (I somehow doubt that's intentional messin' with gender). Most charitable interpretation I could give is that the dialogue wasn't originally intended for that specific Ped. Yeah, I'm very much hopin' things that that'll never happen again.

There's also the Crisp Twins from GTA:L69 which I read somewhere that one of them are supposed to be gay and hits on the main character but I think it's just him calling the character gorgeous again and because of their real world inspirations

Honestly I'm pretty worried about the new GTA. Modern cancel culture is ruining comedy especially in satirical representations of modern society. It's not meant to be taken seriously, just like every other type of person represented in the gta games. I think it's unfair to say stereotypically dressed gay guys in leather is offensive to gay people as they used to/still dress exactly like that. I mean look at Relax - Frankie goes to hollywood, so many of the same stereotypes but it's a supportive message. GTA just jokes about everyone it's supposed to offend you just like it would offend any white trailer trash when they see they're represented as bums in the games or black people represented as gangsters or every asian person being a member of the Yakuza and every italian owning a pizza shop. They're all HARMLESS stereotypes. Not all of them are mirror reflections of the real world and that's the point.

trans masc and bi here, love the video and congrats on the transition :) it takes a lot of work and reflection to realize these things and i'm proud and happy that you're here. been a fan of gta since gta 3 (was 6/7, had no real business playing it but my older siblings were into it). there's a lot of stuff i know to be bad and questionable in regards to queer depictions, but after a while i just accepted things as they were. sure there's characters that are outdated stereotypes but yknow what? some of them are fun. there's even some characters i know aren't intended to be queer but have moments where you go, "yknow what, that Is kinda gay." i don't trust rockstar to be 100% perfect w representation and lord knows there's some real ghouls in the fanbase, but i still love the franchise. cishet people shouldn't get to be the only ones having fun being a maniac in a video game

You know what grinds my gears about media coverage of Rockstar games is that they always seem to focus on the supposed worst possible narrative angle. But when you really stop and think about it, Rockstar never shies away from portraying reality, in a satirized manner, especially when it comes to the cities their games are set in. They were pushing boundaries long before it became a trend in the industry. Think about it, which other game series features such a diverse range of nationalities and races among its protagonists and showcasing gay and trans characters in their plots or world. Only thing they were missing is a female protagonist in the modern 3D and HD games, but hay we got Lucia now in GTA 6. As a proud Slavic guy from the Balkans, Niko stands out as one of the first, and perhaps only, Balkan characters to take the lead in a major AAA billion dollar gaming franchise.

I didn't know that you, as LGBTs, have to approach certain media such as video games with caution of being offended or hurt since i never bothered i only consume, and i dont mind or care if they make few stereotypes or jokes about my people, I'm actually amazed how creative they are especially GTA😂. But you know what it's nice to know that everybody is different & take different approaches to things in life. Loved your video btw❤

24:00 i always thought Kasuke was gay but married because he was a Yakusa boss and to save face and reputation amidst rumors …but I’m almost 99.9% sure Kenji was gay because the hyper sexualized Asuka literally said “it’s so like Kenji to be playing with my toys” most likely referring to vibrations but also showing Asuka did see Claude as a sexual endeavor due to the double entendre she views Claude as both a tool for success and a toy for pleasure. As for Kenji not hitting on Claude it’s probably because after the toy line he probably assumed Claude was straight with Asuka and therefore not interested so he was more mean to him or Claude just wasn’t Kenji’s type. Also idk if it was the lisp but even when I was little I thought that Kenji was gay.

as a gay man and certified gta enjoyer for nearly 20 years now, i just hope they don't lose their edge when it comes to the writing and crafting the game world. honestly i like being able to laugh at myself and aspects of my identity, and mildly offensive depictions clearly meant in jest that are more or less relegated to the background of the in-game world will never bother me. having said that, characters like rudy do bother me a bit... something about when the queerness of a character is used to highlight their most negative traits and to perpetuate negative stereotypes rubs me wrong. in general, though, i just want my identity to be treated like any other and don't mind the satirical spin the writers have occasionally given to certain aspects/stereotypes about homosexuality. given the progression of things since 2013 and earlier, i absolutely anticipate that there will be more positive lgbt+ representation and probably a lot of digs at right-wing homophobia (especially considering the setting) in vi.

I’m a straight male and never knew you was trans nor will that affect me from being a fan of your work or a supporter of yours. This video was another great video and I learned something we okay these games so much and over look things. The Ballard of gay tony is my favorite dlc and wish it was a full game it had so much depth and variety. I’m not similar with all the sexualities and switching to Trevor sometimes and he have a dress threw me off but seeing it from your eyes and words now I understand Trevor a lot better then just thinking he weird he still is weird but I understand him more. Video was dope and no one should judge or not support you just because of your sexuality should be based off your work that’s it

as a gay guy, i never really used to care about LGBT representation in gta, but i suppose i would hear a thing here and there that would upset me. in somewhat more recent years, when i played VCS for the first time, i absolutely adored reni, and genuinely felt sad when other characters would be weirded out or judge them, or even make fun of others for being in a relationship with them (diego mendez comes to mind. or was it armando? idk the blue one). i am glad that vic is (mostly) accepting of them and their interactions, especially towards the end, are pretty endearing. now on to gta 4, which i played for the first time even more recently, last year in fact, when i saw bernie i thought "oh, not another gay stereotype", and... that's what he was. i do like how accepting of him niko turns out being (despite the using the VERY common line of "it's your choice"), but honestly him as a character was nothing more than a stereotype to me and he had nothing else going on for him. being gay wasn't just a trait, it was his whole personality which i think is bad representation. after 4 i played TLaD and TBoGT also for the first time. i really didn't like tony on my first playthrough, i think in my mind, my expectation from a first sight was that he was just another bernie and that's it, so i never really paid too much attention to him. though, after playing through the game and going back for the gold medals, i was also watching the cutscenes just to refresh my memory (since it had been a while since i finished the story), and i ended up liking him (and the story overall) a lot more. yes, there were still those stereotypes, but underneath all that there's an actual character. it's still not perfect, the stereotype is still a huge part of his character, and there's a lot of discrimination from other characters, but it was a step in the right direction. i'm looking forward to gta 6, but i'm also being apprehensive. i would love more representation and an actual character whose personality doesn't revolve around being flamboyant, but we might also get the same treatment, we'll just have to wait and see. thank you for the great video!! ❤

This was a great video, I wish all the best on your journey! There's also a rollerskating NPC in VC, usually seen around the beach who is quite obviously gay, you can find them in gta vc npc quotes videos. His dialogue is pretty flamboyant and you could say the same about his outfit, a neon croptop and shorty shorts though it wasn't completely out of the norm for straight men also to wear similar clothes during the glorious 80s so it might just be a case of "it was the style at the time", who knows. I think he's a pretty typical flamboyant gay man typical in media from the early 2000s, not necessarily negative but definitely stereotypical 😅

a lot of the ones that are names of companies i don't mind at all, almost every in the game company has some kind of crude name making fun of any group of people. But the tossers thing i must correct, i'd always thought it was for the UK definition given GTA is made in Scotland. I didn't even know tosser had any other meaning beyond just being another word for idiot in other parts of the world.

This video definitely opened up a new perspective on you! I kinda feel like Alex Chilton, another one of Niko's girlfriends, could have made the list. Just like Carmen, you can take her to the strip club and she'll be watching the girls, unlike other girls like Katie or Kiki. Maybe in the future you can dive deeper into this on both game characters and yourself; educating more people out there, because I'm certainly one of the many people who loves gay people yet am very VERY clueless on so many things!

Since you've mentioned the OG LOC's prison "Gig". I'd like to put some light on implied sexual assaults present in both RDR2 and GTAV. I won't get into details as you can easily look it up online but I've just wanted to say: Although I have myself not been a victim of SA I believe that the way Rockstar used it as jokes in the past is one of the darkest parts of this franchise.

I think you seem to miss the point, OG Loc is insecure about his homosexuality in prison, its not offensive or homophobic and that's that. The trans character in Vice City Stories IS offensive and transphobic however, that one is genuinely problematic.
