In honor of my Great Grandma Martinez and Taco Tuesday, I am sharing her recipe for homemade tortillas. Here we cook with the harvest and no I didn't grow the wheat for flour but these are a must for our beans, peppers, and tomatoes.
If your missing Mexican food during this whole coronavirus weirdness try making these homemade tortillas. You'll never want to buy them again! I promise.

I was taught by my mother-in-law how to make tortillas and many other Mexican dishes, since I grew up mostly in Europe, my daddy was in the army. There is nothing like having the first one with butter on it. Pure heaven. I have been making tortillas for 62 years and I have never been able to make them round. I mean I get pretty close, but honestly, I have no idea why I can't make round tortillas. My wonderful father-in-law, used to hold them up and say things like, oh this looks like New York, or this looks like Kansas, etc. I think I hit every state! When my grandsons (they are 36 now) show up unexpectedly, I make them up a batch each to take home along with the salsa I make especially for them. Such a warm feeling knowing you are making someone happy, that is what I feel every time I make them. ❤❤

I grew up with my grandmother making tortillas and they were the best. I learned recently from my aunt who lived with my grandmother that YOU CAN SAVE PART OF THE DOUGH in cling wrap and then put in a zip lock bag and take out the next day and let get to room temp and make the remainder of the tortillas if you don’t want them all the same day because they are so much better fresh. SHE ALSO SAID YOU CAN FREEZE THE DOUGH AND LET IT DEFROST AND COME TO ROOM TEMP AND MAKE TORTILLAS… I tried the freeze method and it today and it worked great!!!! She said don’t leave the dough too long in the fridge but I think it is great you can do that.

These look the closest to what my mom did. My mom just passed away 😭 at 92 and I never learned to make her tortillas. By the time I was old enough to really appreciate it and want to get the recipe she had dementia and arthritis. Everything I saw you do in your video that your grandma did reminds me of what I remember seeing my mom do growing up... from covering the dough, stretching the dough and making balls mushroom style and patting them before putting on the comal... All things my mom did too! Most importantly, your final result looks like what I remember her tortillas looking like👍💜💜 Thank you so much👏👏 for the video, I'm going to give it a try soon.

The little “mushroom caps” are called testales. You can store the dough covered in your refrigerator for 3-4 days. If you whip the shortening or lard before mixing in the flour you get a lighter texture and you won’t need the baking powder.

Don't worry about how they look, in time you will be making them round, unless you are like me and can't make a round tortilla, lol. The flavor is what really counts. Good luck my dear with your efforts. ♥

In the northern part of México the influence of Polish, French, Serbian, Spaniard, Italian, and from other countries, made a fusion with native American food and others customs. That's why tortillas are maden of wheat flour. Also corn tortillas are popular at this mexican area. ¡Buen provecho! 🙂👌🏻🌷💚.

There is nothing like a homemade corn tortilla. The flavor and texture are so much better than store bought ones. I made wheat tortillas when my grandson told me he was cutting out white flour. I started experimenting with wheat flour and white wheat flour. I had to make adjustments on the amount of lard I used, and I still haven't gotten the recipe quite right yet, but I'm getting there. 😀

Thanks for sharing…Thumbs up! On the part where you’re patting them just before placing them on the grill, you can “gently” stretch them out a bit to be a little more circular…(although I know that perfect circles are not the goal here.). It takes practice to do the “gentle stretch” but it does help to get a rounder tortilla.

I do not know about saving the dough for sure. But I do know people will freeze them after the tortillas were made. It only takes a few minutes to thaw(about 15 or 20 minutes). I do not recommend in the microwave though. If you have a gas cook top I’d warm them right on the 🔥. Or if you have electric warm in the same pan you cooked them on. Do not warm them on the coil of an electric cooktop. I hope this helps.
