A jazz guitarist who doesn't sound like he has oven gloves on his hands and woollen blankets stuffed into his amp. Treble - what a concept! He almost sounds like he's playing a nylon string on some notes. Great player, wonderful sound! Tasteful accompaniment by Barney Kessel, too. Just beautiful.
He was really good!!!! It’s a shame he didn’t get the recognition like George Benson and Wes Montgomery!! And the crazy part about it, Grant Green was their favorite guitarist!!!
@@travelingman9763 I believe it too!!! Lou discovered him and brought him to Blue Note in 1959-60. Grant played on several of Lou’s albums 1960-64 before Lou left for the Chess/Argo label. When Lou came back up Blue Note in 1967-73, he had Melvin Sparks, George Benson, Ted Dunbar and Jimmy Ponder playing guitar on his recording sessions!!! Couldn’t get Grant for his sessions during his second tenure at Blue Note!!!
Stuck at home on a Saturday night watching this video and absolutely enjoying every single note played in this song. Truly captivating and enchanting from the late Grant Green.
In my opinion one of the most distinctive voices on guitar, using single line phrasing like I've never seen. As expressed in this thread, Green was certainly deserving of more recognition. Thanks to his extensive discography this virtuosic master with a non-Wes, generation defining sound, can still be heard.
If I had to pick one favorite guitarist -- which is hard to do -- I'd have to go with Grant Green. His phrasing, his note choice, his combination of jazziness and R&B funkiness, and on and on. This is a great video, so thanks to Leonardo Mezzini for posting it.
Grant Green is an all-time great jazz guitarist, without question...but when it comes to talking about the greats, his name is often unaccountably absent. He remains underrated where the public is concerned, perhaps but to his fellow jazz musicians, he was among the very best. This is evidenced by the fact that he was one of the most-recorded Blue Note artists during the 1960s, both as a sideman and leader, and that many horn players named him their favorite guitarist with which to work. What a unique and immediately recognizable touch! We owe thanks to the amazing Lou Donaldson, who was not only an amazing musician himself, but an awesome talent scout.... he helped discover Green and also George Benson...and used both players frequently on his recordings as a leader. Thanks Lou!

@@KP-by4eu - That's one perspective and your opinion. But Metheny or Carlton are where you set the bar? Give me a break. For starters, neither of them are genuine straight-ahead jazz players. Carlton is a gifted player, no question, but he doesn't make his living playing mainstream jazz. No,sorry, fusion and "smooth jazz" don't qualify. Pat Metheny is ridiculously overrated and a prima donna. Anyone who mentions him in the same sentence as real giants like Pass and Montgomery or Hall is seriously suspect in my view. To paraphrase Louis Armstrong, "If you have to ask why Grant Green was great, you'll never understand..." Green's playing was so widely-admired in his time that he was one of the busiest musicians on the Blue Note label in the 1960s not only his own recordings as a leader, but doing guest spots for others on their sessions. During his prime, he played with jazz heavy-weights, too, ranging from Duke Pearson to Jimmy Smith to Herbie Hancock to Lou Donaldson and many more. His resume from that time reads like a who's who of the foremost jazz players around at the time. They apparently saw something worthwhile in his style, and - no disrespect - I'd sooner trust their taste than yours. Sorry, better luck next time. It wasn't just other guitarists who admired his sound and approach. Many of the people who hired him as a sideman were horn players or organists or pianists. He could also play leading a trio with just bass and drums, which is an art all by itself. I am personally not all that fond of Green's late period music, when he dove heavily into funk and the like in the 1970s before his death, but in those days, musicians sometimes had to roll with whatever was fashionable to pay the bills and keep the lights on. Hardcore jazz may be wonderful, and it is - but its audience is too small to pay the bills. Which is why guys move into more mainstream forms. Of course, this was the time when his substance abuse problems became more serious, ultimately ending his life prematurely before he celebrated his 45th birthday. But he carved a place for himself in jazz history and in the annals of jazz guitar. Can you say the same? I expect not, so maybe - just maybe - you ought to show the man some more respect.
@@GeorgiaBoy1961 one of my guitar tutors in jazz college referred to Grant Green simply as ‘The Emperor’ 😅. This was atleast 20 years ago . He is well known and revered among a lot of guitarists here in Ireland. I sold a lot of his albums too when I worked for Tower records some time ago and not just to jazz fans . He was definitely underated in his lifetime to some extent , but his music will live on forever . He was a master . Regards John
The accompanying guitar work by Mr. Kessel, a master himself, is just sublime. Sometimes letting the chords ring a bit, other times stopping them quickly. He helps shine the spotlight solely on Mr. Green and his soul-filled work. So happy I found this video! Now I must investigate aNOTHer great jazz musician!!
GG is my favorite jazz guitarist. His work with the great Sonny Clark is fantastic. He plays in numerous organ trios from Baby Face Willette to The very different work with Larry young. He also plays on Matator with elvin and McCoy. I love the pierceness and clarity of each note.

2022/02/02 Wednesday. 10 pm. In my room/home. AC is on, room is dry and warm. Yellowish lamps. Was writing my thesis for master`s degree.. these few weeks has been hectic,.. here and there.. life has been felt like a light*,... light speed 3*10^8 m/s... every day feels like light,.. I've never heard any one so underrated in all my life this shouldn't be the guitarist over shadowed by Wes django and Joe I've listened to jazz for a while and only found him a couple months ago I shouldn't have had to search farther to find him he is on their level no question
@J. P. I'm a bit confused about Grant Green, Jr. since I just yesterday watched the 3-part "Grant Green Story" here on youtube which chronicled Grant Green Jr.'s quest to document his father's life. The Grant Green Jr. in the video looks quite different from the guitarist who is playing still today. A short snippet in the video showed him playing a guitar right-handed, but the gentleman you're speaking of plays left-handed. Also, the man in the video said he "sucks" at guitar when asked. It might be that the video was made so long ago that he has since learned to be a much better guitarist. I still can't understand the left- vs. right-handed thing though, and the fairly extreme difference in appearance. It's almost like there's two Grant Green Juniors.
Did he zapped at the end? Seems like he pulled his hand off that axe mighty quick, and if the grounding in those buildings was not good, that could easily happen, if you rest your hand on the pickups while also grabbing the strings at the neck.
I love Grant Green, the reason I clicked play is cos I was curious about the guitar he was using. You can see he really is diggin the tone. Does any-one know what model it is, I thought it may be a Epiphone maybe an Emperor but I dont know many other large archtops they made.Thanks for posting. His records did well here in the UK, in the 80s we were really into his music.
hey yes it is an Epiphone Emperor with a McCarty pickguard pickup. I believe soon after this gig Grant started using a D'Aquisto which became his number one guitar on his funk records of the 70s.

at their entry, the bass player and rhythm guitar (Kessel) are not playing the same chord changes ... and neither are at the same spot in structure of the song with what Grant Green is trying to play. Grant has to modify the melody by ear to fit with what the rhythm section is playing, and cannot state the 'correct' melody ... clearly this tune is not familiar to the others (bloody french tune lol), and it takes a bit of adjustment and listening for things to fall into place, that's how I picture jams went before the time of fake books, iReal Pro and the rest : use your ears and learn FAST on the spot :-)
Jazz players can often stray so far from the melody that even other musicians find themselves puzzling as to what exactly the performer is doing! Especially on the first hearing! Not this fellow!
I've being a jazz collector since the 50s its a pity this guys are no more except for Kenny Burrel whose whereabouts are unknown Grant Barney KesselHerb Ellis have always being my guys ike his from another world i wish this generation could take tips
