Graphite AND Isopropyl Hot Wheels Lube?! - Feral MODS

Does mixing graphite and isopropyl alcohol really work to easily lubricate your wheels and axles? Easier than applying dry graphite? I suggest 91% or higher alcohol content. NOTE: Isopropyl can remove the chrome off wheels, and if you drip the mix onto your paint job it may stain the clear coat.
Kids, since there's alcohol involved, ask an adult to help.

Thank you! Found the needle tip bottles at Hobby Lobby if anyone is looking for them.

I really like this idea. Seems like it moves the graphite quite a bit further into the areas that need it, including the wheel to chassis contact point. We used something similar in the military called Neolube.

Awesome, thanks for the video. What is the ratio of alcohol to graphite you use in the mixture? Also, have you ever tried using Pledge on the axles? Supposedly it gives them a slight wax coating.
@FeralPatrick
@FeralPatrick 2 года назад
Hey Lily! The ratio is roughly 2-1, but no more than 3-1.
@FeralPatrick
@FeralPatrick 2 года назад
Haven't tried Pledge, bit I'd think the wax/moisture would attract and collect dust. I tried using 3-in-1 liquid silicone mixed with graphite - the silicone dries, but it seems to slightly gum up a little.
@Lily.The.Dog.

@@FeralPatrick yeah, you’re probably right. Any wax or residue would eventually cause dust to gum up the axles. I have also tried silicone and at first they roll crappy. Work out the residue after awhile and it seems to roll pretty nice because I believe the silicone spray has alcohol in it and once the alcohol evaporates it leaves a white powdery finish that you work into the axle. Silicone just isn’t as good as graphite I don’t think.

When you say you reapply 2-4 times, do you mean as soon as the alchol dries apply an additional drop? 4 times in a life time? Wanna make sure that I apply correctly
@FeralPatrick
@FeralPatrick 10 месяцев назад
Yes, I wait for the alcohol to dry, roll the car back and forth to work it in again, tap away the loose graphite and reapply another drop or two. Repeat the process as necessary. I now do the process 3 times in succession before I ship my cars. Good luck!

What is the best (finest) graphite to use? Ive been using Hobby Lobby graphite, but it's pretty big flakes.

I've only tried two brands. Maximum Velocity is my choice, as well as many of the top racers.

Hi . Wanted to ask. Is it okay after i let the graphite dried up, then i put oil . Will it messed up the wheels?
@FeralPatrick
@FeralPatrick 5 месяцев назад
I would not suggest that. I tried using liquid silicone with graphite and while it didn’t gum up the works it did slow it down. But if you want to try it, I’d use a car you don’t care about, just in case. If it’s petroleum based oil it WILL soften and almost melt the plastic wheels.

Do you have a specific reason for not taking 99.9% Isopropylene? Evaporating water will propably leave residue which we won´t want.
@FeralPatrick
@FeralPatrick Год назад
No reason. It was what I had available. With one drop of alcohol, and at 91%, I can't imagine it leaving a residue since it's likely distilled water. But I'm no chemist. I'd be far more concerned with the unknown 'extras' in the graphite we're using. I found a significant difference in the cheaper vs. the brand I use in the video, so I'd try a couple brands.

Other than chrome coming off, have you ran across any damaging effects to the wheels, axels and/or performance of your cars? Do you still use this mixture?
@FeralPatrick
@FeralPatrick 11 месяцев назад
No damage that I've noticed, other than if you drip on your paint job it may stain the paint/clear coat so I usually apply before i re-attach the body. I still use this mixture exclusively. I re-apply 2-3 times - 4 total. Since using this method I've won one tournament and placed 3rd in another, and I've made top qualifying time more than once.

@@FeralPatrickI started my racing channel and this mixture is working GREAT!! And saves time; QUESTION THOUGH: When you say"2-3 time, 4 total ", do you mean consecutively, wait an hour or in a lifetime? Just want to know the time to allow before applying the 2nd, 3rd & 4th doseage .

Can you please further explain when you say 2:1 ratio? Thank you
@FeralPatrick
@FeralPatrick Год назад
Let's use a milliliter as a unit of measure. You would then use two milliliters of isopropyl alcohol to one milliliter of graphite. This would be by volume, not weight. I believe my mini oiler bottles are one ounce, or approx. 30 mL. I'd start with 10 mL iso and 5 mL graphite (2 to 1 ratio). I'd even try a 3 to 1 ratio (15 mL iso, 5 mL graphite). You can always add more of either, just as long as it flows freely yet still has enough graphite suspended in it to coat everything. Hope this helps!

Is ethyl alcohol a good one to use?
@FeralPatrick
@FeralPatrick Год назад
@@MongCute168 - I couldn't say for sure. If ethyl doesn't react with either the plastic wheels or the graphite itself it should work. Test in small amounts on a car you don't care about, just in case ethyl reacts.

Where can I find the graphite❓I have a diecast car that I want to roll nicely. It’s more ornate than a Hot Wheels, but I’m hoping this process can help.
@FeralPatrick
@FeralPatrick Год назад
I bought it on Amazon. They still sell it. FYI - the isopropyl may remove the chrome off of your wheels or anything it touches.
@boss12
@boss12 Год назад
@@FeralPatrick do you know if it works on different types of axles❓The car I have is 1:64 scale, but it’s axles are like the plastic ones on a 1:18 scale car. Right now it feels like the car has a parking brake.
@FeralPatrick
@FeralPatrick Год назад
@@boss12 Since graphite is dry and used for things like padlocks and other moving parts, I don't see why it wouldn't work and be safe for plastic. The iso evaporates quickly and I don't think it would react with the plastic in a bad way. If you just want to skip the iso and just apply the graphite dry that should work, too.
@boss12

@@FeralPatrick thanks so much for your advice. This is all brand new to me. I’ve owned plenty of diecast in my life, but never used any sort of products on them. I really like the car itself, it’s a Cadillac Fleetwood. I want it to roll as nicely as it presents.

most any auto parts store has it. If you know of a boy scout ask them as they use graphite all the time on derby cars.@@FeralPatrick
