I'll never forget these shows. I was only just ten years old living in Montclair NJ, right outside of Growing up the Dead were everywhere around me.Growing up they were always playing near by. I had been getting into the Dead heavy for about a year and a half thanks to the older kids in town,my brother, best friends older brothers, my step sister &her friends, radio,SNL, my Dad buying us albums &the cool guys who worked at the record store. I'll never forget when this guy who worked at the record store coming in after one of the nights sad because he said he had been hired to help the film crew and he screwed up and was fired for getting distracted and filming heads making love in the back of the place. I don't know if it was true but to a ten year old, the story was epic &mind blowing!!
I know this is slightly "off topic" but I was shooting. live video for a horse. racing event in Santa.Rosa, CA and. between races I locked down my camera to go get food and a woman. with. very large breasts stood right. in my unattended shot and all you could see was boobs. I didn't get fired but I did get a firm lecture over it! Your. story reminded me of that day. Live. video is always. a challenge. because people do some wild crazy things.
I was there on this night...Oct. 30th. I was 15 yrs. old. My dad drove me and my friend in from North Jersey and then came back and picked us up at 1 am. He was waiting out front under the marquis in his yellow 1978 Chevy Chevette. The band was still playing the encore...Casey Jones. That was my first Dead show.
He wants to slow fate down and everyone is trying to listen to learn what he has to say. Genius. Years and years of "deaftones" who must become literate and maybe think on their own. I like that about heady music.
Actually, he just wants to rip off other gamblers in a card game. This song isn’t a metaphor, it’s Robert Hunter at his best describing a gambler about to fleece a game, but he needs a stake from his girlfriend. “I know something you will never know”, “I can tell the queen of diamonds by the way she shines.” “Come to daddy, on an inside straight”. “I got no chance of losing this time.” Then they skip town.
