"Famously referred to by Jerry Garcia as one of his favourite songs to play live with the Grateful Dead, Row Jimmy was a steady part of the repertoire from 1973 to 1995, played 276 times by the Dead. Almost exclusively a first set song, this beautiful version comes from the day after the Dead brought back Death Don't Have No Mercy." - David Lemieux

@jpwjr1199
@jpwjr1199 3 года назад
It's definitely true that he must have like the phrasing built into the solo sections of this song. It has what could be considered a stilted 2 bar phrasing, which would actually be standard if not for the stop or accent on the 4th beat of the first bar. It could be counted or felt as 3/4, 1/4, 4/4 or just 4/4 with a accent on beat 4 of the first bar. It encourages, even coerces, the players to provide a space or a breath in the phrasing, and probably appealed to Jerry's love of contrast within a passage. It's also deceptively simple, actually.
